Book excerpt: We propose a solution to determine the optimal elastic matching of a deformable template to an image. The central idea is to cast the optimal matching of each template point to a corresponding image pixel as a problem of finding a minimum cost cyclic path in the three-dimensional product space as well as in four-dimensional product space spanned by the template and the input image. We introduce a cost functional associated with each cycle, which consists of three terms: a data fidelity term favoring strong intensity gradients, a shape consistency term favoring similarity of tangent angles of corresponding points, and an elastic penalty for stretching or shrinking. The functional is normalized with respect to the total length to avoid a bias toward shorter curves.Optimization is performed by Lawler's Minimum Ratio Cycle algorithm parallelized on state-of-the-art graphics cards. The algorithm provides the optimal segmentation and point correspondence between template and segmented curve in computation times that are essentially linear in the number of pixels.A new approach to 4-D shape-based segmentation and tracking of multiple,deformable anatomical structures used in cardiac MR images can be implemented here.We propose to use an energy-minimizing geometrically deformable template(GDT) which can deform into similar shapes under the influence of image forces.The degree of deformation of the template from its equilibrium shape is measured by a penalty function associated with mapping between the two shapes.By minimizing this term along with the image energy terms of the classic deformable model,the deformable template is attracted towards objects in the image whose shape is similar to its equilibrium shape.This allows the simultaneous segmentation of multiple deformable objects using intra-as well as inter-shape information.Simulated Annealing(SA),a stochastic relaxation technique is used for segmentation while Iterated Conditional Modes(ICM),a deterministic relaxation technique is used for tracking.

It is generally recognised that the analysis of objects of interest is eased significantly by making use of models of objects. In many cases, the strongest visual feature of an object is its shape. Also, many objects of interest are non-rigid, or have a non-rigid appearance with respect to a particular viewpoint. For these reasons, there is much interest in the construction of, and tracking with, deformable shape models. A common approach to building such a model is to apply statistics to a set of real-life training examples of an object in order to learn shape and deformation characteristics. Such methods have proved successful in many specific applications; however, they can experience inadequacies in the general case. For example, objects which exhibit non-linear deformations give rise to models which are not compact and not specific: in the process of capturing the range of valid shapes, invalid shapes also become incorporated into the model. This effect is particularly pronounced when building models from automatically-gathered training data. Also, in tracking, smooth movement and deformation is generally assumed, but is not always the case: the apparent shape of an object can change discontinuously over time due to, for example, rotations in 3D. The work in this thesis addresses the above problems. Two extensions to current statistical methods are described. The first makes use of polar coordinates to improve the modelling of objects which bend or pivot. The second uses a hierarchical approach to model more general complex deformations; non-linearities are broken down into smaller linear pieces in order to improve model specificity. In particular, this greatly improves the modelling of objects from automatically-gathered training data. A new approach to tracking which complements the latter of these models is also described. Learned object shape dynamics are combined with stochastic tracking to produce a system which can track from automatically-generated models, as well as being able to handle discontinuous shape changes. Examples are given of the use of these techniques, predominantly in the domain of hand tracking. In particular, it is shown how it is possible to track 3D objects purely from 2D models of their silhouettes.

We first develop new shape descriptors that are robust to deformation while being able to capture part details. In our framework, the shape descriptor is generated by 1) using running angle to transforming a shape into a 2-D description image in the position and scale space; 2) performing circular wavelet-like sub-band decomposition of this 2-D description image based on its periodic convolution with orthogonal kernel functions. The shapes are classified with linear SVM. Our performance evaluations on several public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods. We then study the problem of detecting deformable objects from cluttered images given a single object sketch as model. To address this challenge, we develop local shape descriptors and additive similarity metric function which can be computed locally while preserving the capability of matching deformable shapes globally. To effectively detect objects with large deformation, we augment the metric function with local motion search, model the relationship between different shape parts using multiple concurrent dynamic programming shape parsers, and finalize the detection result using Hough voting. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art shape-based object detection algorithms on the benchmark datasets in terms of average precision.

However, it is hard for a computer to track a fast moving object under varying illumination and occlusions, in clutter, and with varying appearance in camera projective space due to its relaxed rigidity or change in viewpoint. Since a generic, precise, robust, and fast tracker could trigger many applications, object tracking has been a fundamental problem of practical importance since the beginnings of computer vision. The first contribution of the thesis is a computationally efficient approach to tracking objects of various shapes and motions. It describes a unifying tracking system that can be configured to track the pose of a deformable object in a low or high-dimensional state-space. The object is decomposed into a chained assembly of segments of multiple parts that are arranged under a hierarchy of tailored spatio-temporal constraints. The robustness and generality of the approach is widely demonstrated on tracking various flexible and articulated objects. Haar-like features are widely used in tracking. The second contribution of the thesis is a parser of ensembles of Haar-like features to compute them efficiently. The features are decomposed into simpler kernels, possibly shared by subsets of features, thus forming multi-pass convolutions. Discovering and aligning these kernels within and between passes allows forming recursive trees of kernels that require fewer memory operations than the classic computation, thereby producing the same result but more efficiently. The approach is validated experimentally on popular examples of Haar-like features.

Book excerpt: Object tracking and its shape estimation from a variety of different measurement sensors is an important problem in many autonomy, robotics, and aerospace system applications. This dissertation proposes tracking algorithms considering two types of measurements: dense illuminance-based measurements and sparse measurement points. Visual tracking algorithms are based on dense illuminance-based measurements, which use the silhouette, color and texture information to represent and track the target. However, when measurements are sparse and only have the position information, extended object tracking (EOT) algorithms are used to solve this problem. For visual tracking using dense illuminance-based measurements, an efficient iterative Earth Mover's Distance (iEMD) algorithm is proposed. The Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) is used as a similarity measure to search for the optimal template candidates in feature-spatial space in a video sequence. Local sparse representation is used as the appearance model for the iEMD tracker. For extended object tracking using sparse measurement points, two models are proposed in this dissertation considering the geometric characteristics of the targets. An image moment-based model is proposed for tracking and estimating the position and shape of the rigid extended object. To track and estimate the shape of the elongated deformable object, a B-spline chained multiple random matrices representation is proposed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed tracking algorithms.
