The aim was to investigate and develop methods that might be suitable for eventual application through embedded software, running on a fixed-point processor, in analytics capable cameras. The work considers common approaches to object detection and representation, seeking out those that offer the necessary computational economy and the potential to be able to cope with constraints such as low frame rate due to possible limited processor time, or weak chromatic content that can occur in some typical surveillance contexts. The aim is for probabilistic tracking of objects rather than simple concatenation of frame by frame detections. This involves using recursive Bayesian estimation. The particle filter is a technique for implementing such a recursion and so it is examined in the context of both single target and combined multi-target tracking. A detailed examination of the operation of the single target tracking particle filter shows that objects can be tracked successfully using a relatively simple structured grey-scale histogram representation. It is shown that basic components of the particle filter can be simplified without loss in tracking quality. An analysis brings out the relationships between commonly used target representation distance measures and shows that in the context of the particle filter there is little to choose between them. With the correct choice of parameters, the simplest and computationally economic distance measure performs well. The work shows how to make that correct choice. Similarly, it is shown that a simple measurement likelihood function can be used in place of the more ubiquitous Gaussian. The important step of target state estimation is examined. The standard weighted mean approach is rejected, a recently proposed maximum a posteriori approach is shown to be not suitable in the context of the work, and a practical alternative is developed. Two methods are presented for tracker initialization. One of them is a simplification of an existing published method, the other is a novel approach. The aim is to detect trackable objects as they enter the scene, extract trackable features, then actively follow those features through subsequent frames. The multi-target tracking problem is then posed as one of management of multiple independent trackers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how machine learning can detect moving objects in a digital video stream. The authors present different background subtraction approaches, foreground segmentation, and object tracking approaches to accomplish this. They also propose an algorithm that considers a multimodal background subtraction approach that can handle a dynamic background and different constraints. The authors show how the proposed algorithm is able to detect and track 2D & 3D objects in monocular sequences for both indoor and outdoor surveillance environments and at the same time, also able to work satisfactorily in a dynamic background and with challenging constraints. In addition, the shows how the proposed algorithm makes use of parameter optimization and adaptive threshold techniques as intrinsic improvements of the Gaussian Mixture Model. The presented system in the book is also able to handle partial occlusion during object detection and tracking. All the presented work and evaluations were carried out in offline processing with the computation done by a single laptop computer with MATLAB serving as software environment.

This dissertation surveys different taxonomies of motion understanding problems, identifies the major components in an automated visual event recognition system, and presents the challenges and the significant studies in moving object detection, shadow elimination, and object tracking. Novel schemes for shadow detection and object tracking are proposed and implemented. The proposed shadow detection scheme does not rely on models of scene or objects, which makes it robust for a variety of outdoor surveillance applications, and also successfully eliminates problems due to illumination changes that are common in outdoor sequences. The proposed schemes for object tracking address the problem of correspondence in the presence of multiple moving objects and occlusions in the scene, and involve multi-hypothesis decision making and color appearance models"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Performance Evaluation Software: Moving Object Detection and Tracking in Videos introduces a software approach for the real-time evaluation and performance comparison of the methods specializing in moving object detection and/or tracking (D&T) in video processing. Digital video content analysis is an important item for multimedia content-based indexing (MCBI), content-based video retrieval (CBVR) and visual surveillance systems. There are some frequently-used generic algorithms for video object D&T in the literature, such as Background Subtraction (BS), Continuously Adaptive Mean-shift (CMS), Optical Flow (OF), etc. An important problem for performance evaluation is the absence of any stable and flexible software for comparison of different algorithms. In this frame, we have designed and implemented the software for comparing and evaluating the well-known video object D&T algorithms on the same platform. This software is able to compare them with the same metrics in real-time and on the same platform. It also works as an automatic and/or semi-automatic test environment in real-time, which uses the image and video processing essentials, e.g. morphological operations and filters, and ground-truth (GT) XML data files, charting/plotting capabilities, etc. Along with the comprehensive literature survey of the abovementioned video object D&T algorithms, this book also covers the technical details of our performance benchmark software as well as a case study on people D&T for the functionality of the software.

Abstract: Visual surveillance in dynamic scenes, especially for human activities, is one of the current challenging research topics in computer vision. It is a key technology to fight against terrorism and crime to ensure public safety. The motivation of this thesis is to design an efficient human visual tracking system for video surveillance deployed in complex environments. In video surveillance, detection of moving objects is the first step to analyze the video streams. And motion segmentation is one of popular approaches to do it. In this thesis, we propose a motion segmentation method to overcome the problem of motion blurring. The task of human tracking is key to the effective use of more advanced technologies, like activity recognition and behavior understanding. However, human tracking routines often fail either due to human's arbitrary movements or occlusions by other objects. To overcome human's arbitrary movement, we propose a new Silhouette Chain Shift model for human detection and tracking. To track human under occlusions, firstly each frame is represented by a scene energy which consists of all the moving objects. Then the process of tracking is converted to a process of minimizing the proposed scene energy. Findings from the thesis contribute to improve the performance of human visual tracking system and therefore improve security in areas under surveillance.
