Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leukocyte motion represents an important component in the innate immune re¬sponse to infection. Intravital microscopy is a powerful tool as it enables in vivo imaging of leukocyte motion. In inflammatory conditions, leukocytes may exhibit various motion behaviors such as flowing, rolling, and adhering. With many cells moving at a variety of speeds, collisions occur. These collisions result in abrupt changes in the motion and appearance of leukocytes. Analyzing the motion behavior of leukocytes is a difficult task. Manual analysis is tedious, error-prone, and could introduce technician-related bias. Automatic tracking methods are also challenging due to the noise inherent in the biomedical imaging process, varied cell appearance during collision, and abrupt change in cell motion patterns. This work presents a novel method to automatically track multiple cells undergoing collisions by modeling the collision states of cells and testing multiple hypotheses of their motion and ap¬pearance. The tracking results are demonstrated using in vivo intravital microscopy image sequences. We have found that: (1) the proposed method tracks 32% more cells than a previous approach without introducing any additional position error; (2) the improvement of the proposed method is emphasized when the duration of collision increases; and (3) given good detection results, the proposed method can correctly track 88% of the total number of cells.

Book Synopsis Biomedical Light Microscopy by : J. James
Download or read book Biomedical Light Microscopy written by J. James and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New interest in light microscopy of the last few years has not been backed up by adequate general literature. This book intends to fill the gap between specialized texts on detailed topics and general introductory booklets, mostly dealing with the use of the conventional light microscope only. In this short textbook both new developments in microscopy and basic facts of image formation will be treated, including often neglected topics such as axial resolving power, lens construction, photomicrography and correct use of phase-en interference contrast systems. Theoretical background will be dealt with as far as necessary for a well-considered application of these techniques enabling a deliberate choice for the approach of a certain problem. Over 150 illustrations (photomicrographs and diagrams) complete the information on microscopy of the nineties in the biomedical field, intended for scientists, doctors, technicians and research students. Many drawings have been contributed by the illustrator R. Kreuger; the photographic work has been executed by J. Peeterse. Secretarial assistance in preparing the manuscript was given by Ms T. M. S. Pierik. Dr M. J. Pearson has corrected the English of the final text.

Book Synopsis Vascular Endothelium by : John D. Catravas
Download or read book Vascular Endothelium written by John D. Catravas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the proceedings from the Advanced Study Institute on "Vascular Endothelium: Physiological Basis of Clinical Problems" which took place in Corfu, Greece in June 1990. The meeting consisted of twenty-eight lectures, most of them adapted as full length papers in this volume, as well as numerous short oral and poster communications which are abstracted and also included in alphabetical order (pages 239-302). There were ninety-six participants from ten NATO and four other European countries. The meeting was the second in as many years dealing with a specific subject in Endothelial Cell biology. Following the 1988 discussion on "Receptors and Transduction Mechanisms", the present ASI recognized and tried to deal with the increasing overlap in interest between basic scientists studying endothelial cell functions and clinicians facing problems of known or suspected endothelial pathological involvement. As with any similar effort, we opted to be selective, rather than fail by trying to be inclusive, in the subjects covered. We chose to discuss diseases, such as atherosclerosis, sepsis, ARDS and stroke, based on their relevance to endothelial cell function and urgent need for new insights into their pathogenesis and treatment. Similarly, we examined endothelial cell functions by considering their relevance to disease and their potential for elucidating important pathologies. Obviously, some areas were covered superficially or not at all; this should not distract from their importance, but rather reflect on the constraints of time and -not at all negligibly -the bias of the organizing committee.

Download or read book Methods in Cellular Imaging written by Ammasi Periasamy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in technology have revolutionized the development of light microscopy techniques in biomedical research, thus improving visualization of the microstructure of cells and tissues under physiological conditions. Fluorescence microscopy methods are non-contact and non-invasive and provide high spatial and temporal resolution that other laboratory techniques cannot. This well-illustrated book targets graduate students and scientists who are new to the state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopy techniques used in biological and clinical imaging. It explains basic concepts and imaging procedures for wide-field, confocal, multiphoton excitation, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), lifetime imaging (FLIM), spectral imaging, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), optical tweezers, total internal reflection, high spatial resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM), and bioluminescence imaging for gene expression. The usage of these techniques in various biological applications, including calcium, pH, membrane potential, mitochondrial signaling, protein-protein interactions under various physiological conditions, and deep tissue imaging, is clearly presented. The authors describe the approaches to selecting epifluorescence microscopy, the detectors, and the image acquisition and processing software for different biological applications. Step-by-step directions on preparing different digital formats for light microscopy images on websites are also provided.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Polymer Dynamics by : Masao Doi
Download or read book The Theory of Polymer Dynamics written by Masao Doi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of the modern theory for the dynamical properties of polymer solutions. The theory has undergone dramatic evolution over the last two decades due to the introduction of new methods and concepts that have extended the frontier of theory from dilute solutions in which polymers move independently to concentrated solutions where many polymers converge. Among the properties examined are viscoelasticity, diffusion, dynamic light scattering, and electric birefringence. Nonlinear viscoelasticity is discussed in detail on the basis of molecular dynamical models. The book bridges the gap between classical theory and new developments, creating a consistent picture of polymer solution dynamics over the entire concentration range.
