The whole tendency of athletics works for good. The athlete abstains from liquor and tobacco. He does not eat unwholesome food. Exercise, bathing, and rubbing down keep his body clean and healthy. At the same time his mind is filled with healthy, natural outdoor 1deals. He is not growing old too fast in an endeavor to rival the pathetic figure of the London gamin who says, I'm ten years old, but if yer goes by the things I know, I'm most a hundred.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Track Athletics Up to Date To make my meaning clear, let us consider, by way of comparison, the familiar example of the attorney who 18 consulted upon a point of law. Rarely, if he 13 a man of experience, does he give his answer offhand, but, on the contrary, his first act is to consult the authorities and to read the decisions of the courts and the theories of the text writers on the point in question. Then, and then only, is he in a position to express an intelligent opinion upon the case. It is this principle which I have borne in mind in writing the present volume. First, I have endeavored to trace, with brevity, the history of track athletics; next, I have noted some of the best of the many books, pamphlets and special articles which have been written on this subject; and lastly, I have tried to summarize, in the year 1919, our present knowledge of proper methods of training and of performing the various events on track and field. The idea itself is, I think, sound, and, within its special field, not without novelty. Of the manner in which I have developed it, the reader, of course, must be the judge. I desire to record here my sincere thanks to Mr. Michael J. Conroy, of the staff of the Boston Public Library, for his unfailing kindness in helping me to bring together the varied material upon which this book is based. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Athlete: Twenty Years on Track and Field I cannot remember the time when I was not interested in sport. There was no form of exercise which did not appeal to me, and this Whether I took part myself, or, as a mere spectator, applauded the performance of others. TO run fast or enduringly, to leap high or far, these had, for me, the savor of great deeds; and upon those who did them Worthily, I gazed with awe, as upon beings of a superior world. I am sure of the facts, yet when I look back and seek to find the reasons for them, I can scarcely seem to hit upon the cause. I was not reared in an athletic atmosphere; there were no family traditions to be maintained. It was, I think, simply a natural bent; the germ Of the athletic fever was in my blood. Stevenson has told us how he learned to write, not so much because he wished to be anauthor, although he wished that too, but principally, as it were, in a wager with him self. And thus my own ambition, though a far less noble one, was in kind the same. I wished to be an athlete, yet it was not for the sake of the medals or the glory, although, to borrow Stevenson's phrase, perhaps I wished that too. But my main incentive, like his, was a wager with myself. There was much that I aimed to acquire, yet it was not to excel others that I practised and trained; A certain standard of accomplishment, was always before me; and to know, in my own heart, that I had attained it that was my desire. Book excerpt: Two weeks after the United States officially entered World War I, Irish American "Bricklayer Bill" Kennedy won the Boston Marathon wearing his stars-and-stripes bandana, rallying the crowd of patriotic spectators. Kennedy became an American hero and, with outrageous stories of his riding the rails and sleeping on pool tables, a racing legend whose name has since appeared in almost every book written on the Boston Marathon. When journalist Patrick Kennedy and historian Lawrence Kennedy unearthed their uncle's unpublished memoir, they discovered a colorful character who lived a tumultuous life, beyond his multiple marathons. The bricklayer survived typhoid fever, a five-story fall, auto and train accidents, World War action, Depression-era bankruptcy, decades of back-breaking work, and his own tendency to tipple. In many ways, Bill typified the colorful, newly emerging culture and working-class ethic of competitive long-distance running before it became a professionalized sport. Bricklayer Bill takes us back to another time, when bricklayers, plumbers, and printers could take the stage as star athletes.

Book excerpt: Fair Play in Sport presents a critical re-working of the classic ideal of fair play and explores its practical consequences for competitive sport. By linking general moral principles and practical cases, the book develops a contemporary theory of fair play. The book examines many of the key issues in the ethics of sport, including: * fairness and justice in sport * moral and immoral interpretation of 'athletic performance' * what makes a 'good competition' * the key values of competitive sport. The notion of fair play is integral to sport as we know and experience it, and is commonly seen as a necessary ethos if competitive sport is to survive and flourish. Fair Play in Sport provides an invaluable guide to the subject for all those with an interest in ethics and the philosophy of sport.
