Book excerpt: I (t(1/2)=15.7 x 10(6)y) has been released to the oceans in large quantities (over 5 times the pre-existing natural inventory) by nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities in northwestern Europe since the 1960's. (129)I was measured by AMS in 11 archived seawater samples (collected from 1969 to 1981) and 83 samples collected in 1993 from 9 stations in the southern Greenland and Norwegian Seas and the high latitude North Atlantic Ocean. Reprocessing-derived (129)I is evident in all of the major water masses sampled. The distribution of (129)I is markedly different from that of the chlorofluorocarbons freon-11 and carbon tetrachloride, reflecting the different nature of the source functions of the tracers. Modeled distributions of (129)I in the surface waters of the Barents, Greenland, and Norwegian Seas, agree well with observations. The most striking result of these models is their prediction that the biogeochemical transport of 129(I) to the deep waters studied cannot be distinguished from physical transport given current measurement capabilities. The use of 129(I) as a tracer of new production will require sampling of a slowly ventilated deep water mass underlying surface waters of high productivity and/or very high 129(I).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of potential vorticity within and stability of nonlinear deep western boundary currents in an idealized tropical ocean are studied using a shallowwater model. Observational evidence indicates that the potential vorticity of fluid parcels in deep western boundary currents must change sign as they cross the equator, but this evidence is otherwise unable to clarify the process. A series of numerical experiments investigate this transformation in a rectangular basin straddling the equator. A mass source located in the northwestern corner feeds fluid into the domain where it is constrained to cross the equator to reach a distributed mass sink. Dissipation is included as momentum diffusion. The Reynolds number, defined as the ratio of the mass source per unit depth to the viscosity, determines the nature of the flow, and a critical value, Rec, divides its possible behavior into two regimes. Book excerpt: The book Radioisotopes - Applications in Physical Sciences is divided into three sections namely: Radioisotopes and Some Physical Aspects, Radioisotopes in Environment and Radioisotopes in Power System Space Applications. Section I contains nine chapters on radioisotopes and production and their various applications in some physical and chemical processes. In Section II, ten chapters on the applications of radioisotopes in environment have been added. The interesting articles related to soil, water, environmental dosimetry/tracer and composition analyzer etc. are worth reading. Section III has three chapters on the use of radioisotopes in power systems which generate electrical power by converting heat released from the nuclear decay of radioactive isotopes. The system has to be flown in space for space exploration and radioisotopes can be a good alternative for heat-to-electrical energy conversion. The reader will very much benefit from the chapters presented in this section.

Book excerpt: As we discover more about the role of the ocean in global changes and identify the effects of global change on the ocean, understanding its chemical composition and processes becomes increasingly paramount. However, understanding these processes requires a wide range of measurements in the vast ocean, from the sea surface to deep-ocean trenches, fr

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Radiogenic Isotope Geology examines revolutionary changes in geochemical thinking that have occurred over the past fifteen years. Extinct-nuclide studies on meteorites have called into question fundamental geochemical models of the Earth, while new dating methods have challenged conventional views of Earth history. At the same time, the problem of global warming has raised new questions about the causes of past and present climate change. In the new edition, these and other recent issues are evaluated in their scholarly and historical context, so readers can understand the development of current ideas. Controversial theories, new analytical techniques, classic papers, and illustrative case studies all come under scrutiny in this book, providing an accessible introduction for students and critical commentary for researchers.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Macroalgae: Biotechnology and Applied Phycology describes the biological, biotechnological and the industrial applications of seaweeds. Vast research into the cultivation of seaweeds is currently being undertaken but there is a lack of methodological strategies in place to develop novel drugs from these sources. This book aims to rectify this situation, providing an important review of recent advances and potential new applications for macroalgae. Focusing on the chemical and structural nature of seaweeds the book brings the potentially valuable bioactive nature to the fore. Novel compounds isolated from seaweeds are reviewed to provide an invaluable reference for anyone working in the field.
