Book excerpt: A method for the determination of trace levels of gold in cyanide process solutions has been developed. Preconcentration of the aurocyanide anion is achieved by extraction into a supported liquid membrane (SLM), formed by the in situ coating of a thin layer of organic phase onto a polymeric support. This support is packed into a microcolumn, which forms part of a flow injection manifold. After the sample solution has flowed over the organic phase for a suitable period, the entire organic phase is washed off the column with an organic solvent and introduced into the flame of a conventional atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The method allows gold to be determined in the range of 0,01 to 0,1 mg/l with a Sr of 0,027 at the 0,04 mg/l level. With an analysis time of 150 seconds per sample, a detection limit of 0,005 mg/l was achieved with a sampling frequency of 24/h.

Book excerpt: The measurement of the available cyanide concentration during the hydrometallurgical recovery of gold is crucial to ensure optimum performance of the leaching and adsorption circuits. This paper traces the development of a simple and versatile process analyser from a bulky laboratory version to a robust and compact process analyser. During the development process, commercially available ion-selective and reference electrodes were replaced by laboratory-built counterparts, which enabled the size and cost of the analyser to be reduced. Modifications were also made to the geometry of the detector cell to improve the sensitivity of the measurement. During the initial stages of the work, flow injection analysis provided a reproducible hydrodynamic environment in which the performance of the potentiometric ion-selective detector was evaluated. After the detector cell had been completely characterized under constant flow conditions, sequential-injection analysis was adopted as a means of sample manipulation. This was made possible by simplifying the construction of the reference electrode. The use of sequential injection analysis as a means of sample manipulation for the laboratory-built detector cell resulted in a simple and versatile cyanide process analyser.

The cyanide process is essentially a chemical one, and a commodious and well-equipped laboratory forms one of the most important and necessary parts of the whole plant. It is the duty of the metallurgist in charge to determine by actual experiment the lowest strength of cyanide solution to extract an adequate percentage of the gold, and also to devise means of overcoming the problems which are inseparable from the treatment of different classes and grades of ore, with so active and subtle a compound as potassium cyanide. The testing and valuing of the ores before, during, and after treatment must be entrusted to a careful and trustworthy assayer. The testing and making up of the working solutions are very simple operations, that may be left to experienced and intelligent workmen who possess a knowledge of arithmetic extending as far as decimals. With free-milling gold ores the actual working extraction will generally be as high as that obtained in the laboratory, but too much reliance must not be placed on the laboratory experiments in the case of ores containing copper or antimony. The author, s experience is that high extractions may be obtained in the laboratory from ores totally unsuited for treatment by the cyanide process on a working scale. The conditions on the one hand are theoretical, on the other actual, and before adopting the cyanide treatment for a sulphide or mineralized ore, working experiments should be made on parcels ranging from two to five tons, in order to ascei-tain the consumption of cyanide and actual extraction. If the working trials are successful the cyanide treatment may be adopted with confidence. On the other hand, in the case of an ore containing comparatively coarse..
