Book excerpt: Though he has made only five films in two decades—Strictly Ballroom, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, and the Oscar-nominated films Moulin Rouge!, Australia, and The Great Gatsby—Australian writer-director Baz Luhrmann is an internationally known brand name. His name has even entered the English language as a verb, as in “to Baz things up,” meaning “to decorate them with an exuberant flourish.” Celebrated by some, loathed by others, his work is underscored by what has been described as “an aesthetic of artifice” and is notable for both its glittering surfaces and recurring concerns. In this collection of interviews, Luhrmann discusses his methods and his motives, explaining what has been important to him and his collaborators from the start and how he has been able to maintain an independence from the studios that have backed his films. He also speaks about his other artistic endeavors, including stage productions of La Bohème and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and his wife and collaborative partner Catherine Martin, who has received two Academy Awards for her work with Luhrmann.

Book excerpt: James Hunt was a towering personality with a commanding presence, a hugely glamorous public figure who brought Formula One motor racing to the attention of a whole new audience. Triumphing against all odds to become World Drivers' Champion with McLaren in 1976, Hunt sank into a period of decadence and depression, only to be rejuvenated as he found true love for the first time. With that came personal contentment and a renewed zest for living, so that one of the most colourful and controversial figures in Grand Prix racing is best remembered by those close to him as a fun-loving, caring man who had a genuinely uplifting presence - qualities that shine through in Gerald Donaldson's compelling and moving account of his life.

Book excerpt: Set in the early 1980s, this intelligent thriller flows like a river to the sea, gaining pace right to the final word, with upbeat, modern writing and vivid characters. Ben Taylor has reached a crossroads in his life and is looking for a sign to show him the way. His life in Submarines is becoming mundane ... should he pursue the fast-paced life of his friends, or maybe settle down and start a family. After a series of events, Taylor's life is irrevocably changed ... a decision is imminent, but before he can make it he must complete one last challenge. Running parallel to Taylor's life is the sociopathic plotting of a renegade IRA terrorist Gallymore. Their paths cross in San Diego, California - A chance meeting that is quite amicable. They never meet again, but their actions ultimately decide each other's fate. Written by a retired Royal Navy submariner and clearance diver with over two decades of experience, The Black Cigar is packed with real-life submarine and Royal Navy diving detail that makes this thriller strikingly realistic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1986 there were several fatal accidents to competitors and spectators involving Group B cars during events of the World Rally Championship. The governing body of motorsport, the FIA, decided that the regulations concerning which cars were eligible to enter the WRC had to be changed and they opted to go for Group A where 5,000 cars of a particular model had to be manufactured in order to qualify. The change was implemented within six months of the decision being taken and thus at the beginning of 1987 season, there were very few cars that both qualified and were also competitive. The rally stars from the previous era like Walter Röhrl, Hannu Mikkola, Juha Kakkunen and Markku Alén were still there with new stars like Carlos Sainz, Didier Auriol, Tommi Mäkinen and Colin McRae emerging. Rallying technology was forced to undergo an almost complete re-start and it took some time before more than just one or two manufacturers could produce a winner. When they did, the side-effect was astounding with thousands of four-wheel drive, turbocharged road cars coming onto the global market. The new McKlein book, Group A: When Rallying created Road Car Icons, covers the ten years from 1987 to 1996 when Group A went from featuring fairly unexciting road cars to exotic, hi-tech rally cars whose performance was not much less than their predecessors. As well as an overview of the major events, the leading cars and crews, the factory teams, the changes of regulations--both technical and sporting--as well as results of all the major events and the championships associated with them, the books are lavishly illustrated with photographs from the famous McKlein archive. In addition, there are many stories of incidents and occurrences that give the reader an insight into just what rallying was like during the period covered and how Lancia, Ford, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi fought for the WRC title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This car started out with the name Celica Supra but is a very different car from the ordinary Celica. The Mk II models were on sale from 1982 to 1985 and had a major redesign in 1986. This produced a car which was smoother and more rounded in shape but retained a look which hinted at the power and performance available. At the start of 1993 the radically designed Mk IV appeared which was lighter and, with a 3-litre engine, had agility and precise handling. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, new model introductions, driver's impressions, buying second-hand, track tests.
