This objective was achieved by conducting toxicity tests with sediments spiked with ordnance compounds, using whole sediment tests with a benthic amphipod and porewater tests with different life stages of three marine organisms. The selection of ordnance compounds and porewater test species for this study was based on the results of previous studies, where a database for toxicity of eight different ordnance compounds to six marine species was generated. The ordnance compounds selected for the present study were 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT), tetryl and picric acid. Two kinds of sediments were spiked with each ordnance compound. Spiked sediments were allowed to equilibrate for approximately 1 week prior to porewater extraction and to toxicity testing of the solid-phase. Solid-phase tests were conducted using the 10-day acute test with the benthic amphipod, Ampelisca abdita. Porewater toxicity tests were conducted using the 48-hour embryological development test with the sea urchin, Arbacia punctulata, the 96-hour zoospore germination and germling growth test with the macro-alga, Ulva fasciata, and the 7-day survival and reproduction test with the burrowing polychaete, Dinophilus gyroclliatus. These species and endpoints were identified previously as being among the most sensitive for these ordnance compounds.

Book excerpt: In July 2001 experts from all around the world met in Reykjavik, Iceland to discuss various issues of polychaete biology. In particular the latest developments in cladistic inference of polychaete phylogeny were presented. Some studies applied recent molecular techniques, revealing unknown genetic relationships between the different families of polychaetous annelids. This volume is of interest to specialists and students seeking an introduction to the latest developments in the field of systematics and ecology of polychaetous annelids. This book is one in a series presenting results from the International Polychaete conferences.

Book excerpt: To assess the potential impact of contamination by ordnance compounds and their contribution to environmental degradation in two areas of Puget Sound, Washington, an extensive study was undertaken. It included the generation of a toxicity database of ordnance compounds to marine organisms, and sediment toxicity and chemical analyses of 50 stations in the vicinity of the Jackson Park and Port Hadlock naval facilities, Puget Sound, including Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) studies at selected stations. Eight ordnance compounds of concern were selected and analyzed for toxicity with six different kinds of marine toxicity tests, which included five species and phyla, and nine endpoints. Toxicity tests and endpoints were: fertilization success and embryological development with the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata; zoospore germination, germling length and cell number with the green macro-alga Ulva fasciata; survival and reproductive success of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus; larvae survival with the redfish Sciaenops ocellatus; and survival of juveniles of the opossum shrimp Mysidopsis bahia. The overall toxicity, chemistry, and TIE test results indicate that ordnance compounds are not contaminants of concern at any of the sites studied in Puget Sound, Washington.

Book excerpt: This report provides guidance and recommendations for selection of a reference toxicant, spiking procedures, and use of control sediments for assessing changes in sensitivity of test organisms to toxicants and measuring precision of both intra- and inter-laboratory spiked-sediment toxicity tests. Four potential reference toxicants (cadmium, copper, pentachlorophenate, and fluoranthene) were considered for selection since they were the only chemicals with published information regarding sediment spiking and use in sediment toxicity tests. The recommendations on the use of these toxicants in tests using either freshwater or marine sediment reflect the information currently available. Instructions are included for the selection of control sediments for spiking, selection and use of test organisms, acquisition and handling of chemicals, conducting reference toxicant tests, establishing and updating warning charts, record keeping, and data reporting. Key areas requiring further research are also identified. The appendices include a summary of current research on formulated sediments, a list of information typically provided in a material safety data sheet, and graphs showing the fate of copper and cadmium added to natural seawater.

Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of energetic materials, including their synthesis, computational modeling, applications, associated degradation mechanisms, environmental consequences and fate and transport. This multi-author contributed volume describes how armed forces around the world are moving their attention from legacy explosive compounds, which are heat and shock sensitive (thus posing greater challenges in terms of handling and storage), to the insensitive munitions compounds/formulations such as insensitive munitions explosive (IMX) and the Picatinny Arsenal Explosive (PAX) series of compounds. The description of energetic materials focuses on explosives, pyrotechnic compositions, and propellants. The contributors go on to explain how modern generation energetic compounds must be insensitive to shock and heat but at the same time yield more energy upon explosion. Nanoinspired and/or co-crystallized energetic materials offer another route to generate next-generation energetic materials, and this authoritative book bridges a large gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of these compounds. Additionally, it includes a valuable overview of energetic materials, a detailed discussion of recent advances on future energetic compounds, nanotechnology in energetic materials, environmental contamination and toxicity, assessment of munitions lethality, the application quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) in design of energetics and the fate and transport of munition compounds in the environment.

Book excerpt: Pore water from coastal beach and marsh sediments from the northern Gulf of Mexico, pre- and post-landfall of the Deepwater Horizon oil release, were collected and evaluated for toxicity with the sea urchin fertilization and embryological development assays. There were 17 pre-landfall samples and 49 post-landfall samples tested using both assays. Toxicity was determined in four pre-landfall sites and in seven post-landfall sites in one or both assays as compared to a known reference sediment pore-water sample collected in Aransas Bay, Texas. Further analysis and testing of five of the post-landfall toxic samples utilizing Toxicity Identification Evaluation techniques indicated that ammonia, and to a lesser extent metals, contributed to most, if not all, of the observed toxicity in four of the five samples. Results of one sample (MS–39) indicated evidence that ammonia, metals, and non-ionic organics were contributing to the observed toxicity.

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of sediment in any aquatic ecosystem is vital to the health of that system. Sediments have been recognised as a major repository for persistent toxic substances. If sediments become sufficiently polluted they can lead to the disruption of surrounding natural biological communities. Therefore the monitoring of sediment quality is essential for successful ecosystem functioning in the marine environment. The aim of the present study was to employ an integrated approach of the toxicity evaluation of Irish marine sediments by correlating results of biotests with chemical analysis. Between 2004 and 2006 the Radiation and Environmental Science Centre (RESC) participate in three Biological Effects Quality Assurances in Monitoring Programme (BEQUALM) whole organism inter-calibration programmes. The aim of this study was to assess operator skill and ensure that the bioassay methods to be employed in this three and a half year project were fit for purpose and of a standard that was internationally acceptable. Chapters Three and Four describe the ecotoxicological evaluation of five organic contaminants frequently detected in marine sediments (Chapter three) and the effects of two metal contaminants (Chapter four) of concern (CdC12 and CuC12) on a battery of marine bioassays employed for sediment assessment. The sensitivity of each species varied for all compounds highlighting the importance of employing a battery of multitrophic bioassay for the ecotoxicological assessment of environmental samples. Suitability of the Microtox and T. battagliai tests for employment in TIE studies were further assess through spiking experiments with tributyltin. The potential toxicity of various exposure phases of sediment from around Ireland is assessed in Chapter five. In addition to the evaluation of multi-exposure phases the use of a battery of multi-trophic test species has been advocated by a number of researchers as testing of single or few organisms may not detect toxicants wi.
