[...] However, to obtain a complete and coherent analysis consistent with this objective, a number of related objectives have been added to pinpoint the causes of toxicity of municipal effluents: • assessment of the effect of industrial contributions on toxicity; • evaluation of the impact of chemical phosphorus removal on toxicity; • identification of the possible links between toxicity and the substan [...] Initially the toxicity potential of the effluents was evaluated by comparing the results of the bioassays and the physico-chemical analyses with the MEF's water quality criteria. [...] Only 4 of the plants had TUcs of between 10 and 20, which means that their effluents are potentially harmful wherever the discharge rate of the receiving environment is low in comparison to that of the municipal plant. [...] The PEEP index, which combines the results of 5 bioassays on organisms representing several aquatic tropic levels, provides two different measures of the toxic potential of effluents: the toxic measure and the toxic load.
