Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To get a personal look at what it is like to work on the Ohio River, newspaperman James E. Casto spent eight days aboard the Blazer as it traveled the Ohio from Huntington, West Virginia, to Pittsburgh, up the Allegheny and the Mongahela, and then back to Huntington. The Paul G. Blazer, a gleaming white towboat owned and operated by Ashland Oil, pushes a group—or "tow," as the rivermen call it—of nine barges on this trip. Along the way, Casto introduces us to Captain Ronnie Davis, pilot Ronnie Burge, engineer Steve Bellomy, the mates, the deckhands, and the cook, as well as the river itself, the life and the beauty that are the Ohio. Interwoven with the narrative of the trip upriver and back is the history of commerce on the Ohio—of how the flatboats and keelboats gave way to the steamboats and how, in turn, the steamboats were replaced by today's powerful, diesel-powered boats such as the Blazer. Mark Twain wrote that the Mississippi had a new story to tell every day. The same can be said of the Ohio. As engaging as it is informative, Towboat on the Ohio tells one of the many stories of the busy, hardworking Ohio River.

Book excerpt: Uniquely illustrating how drugs and lack of security on the water are a threat to our national security, a compelling account using our nation’s rivers. Seeing the dangers of river traffic, understanding the awesome power of water, and being inspired by the Oklahoma City bombing; the author paints a vivid account of a very realistic and unique possibility. The book is written is a Tom Clancy style yet includes elements of humor, notions of “honor among thieves” and personal integrity. The author is a mariner who has worked with towboats and barge traffic for eighteen years, and gives the “land lubber” a glimpse into the lifestyle of a typical “river rat”. The book begins with a prologue to help the reader understand how maritime river trade works. It sets off by drawing the reader into the life of one particular mariner, and follows him through some bad personal choices until he is found stuck in a terrible situation, and unwittingly sets into motion a domestic terrorism plan that devastates thousands of people and wipes out one of the countries premier cities. An epilogue sums up life for the characters after the crisis.

Book excerpt: Back in the days of the lumberjack and river drive, supplies and equipment were moved up Maine's most remote river by towboats - large, wooden barge-like vessels - which were towed upriver by horses or oxen on the shore. In this story, eleven-year-old Ben takes the trip of a lifetime when he accompanies his Uncle Horace on one of the last towboat trips up Maine's wild Allagash River. Along the way he encounters moose and bear, meets new friends, and makes some surprising discoveries about himself and Maine's north woods. Rich in history, lore, and culture, Allagash River Towboat portrays a colorful side of Maine's history and provides readers a glimpse of the life of Maine rivermen in the 1930s. Ben's exciting and unforgettable adventure will be enjoyed by readers of any age.

Book excerpt: The Patch is the seventh collection of essays by the nonfiction master, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. It is divided into two parts. Part 1, “The Sporting Scene,” consists of pieces on fishing, football, golf, and lacrosse—from fly casting for chain pickerel in fall in New Hampshire to walking the linksland of St. Andrews at an Open Championship. Part 2, called “An Album Quilt,” is a montage of fragments of varying length from pieces done across the years that have never appeared in book form—occasional pieces, memorial pieces, reflections, reminiscences, and short items in various magazines including The New Yorker. They range from a visit to the Hershey chocolate factory to encounters with Oscar Hammerstein, Joan Baez, and Mount Denali. Emphatically, the author’s purpose was not merely to preserve things but to choose passages that might entertain contemporary readers. Starting with 250,000 words, he gradually threw out 75 percent of them, and randomly assembled the remaining fragments into “an album quilt.” Among other things, The Patch is a covert memoir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Donald T. Wright Award from the the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library, a special collection of the St. Louis Mercantile Library Life Between the Levees is a chronicle of first-person reflections and folklore from pilots who have dedicated their lives to the river. The stories are as diverse as the storytellers themselves, and the volume is full of drama, suspense, and a way of life a “landlubber” could never imagine. Although waterways and ports in the Mississippi corridor move billions of dollars of products throughout the US and foreign markets, in today's world those who live and work on land have little knowledge of the river and the people who work there. In ten years of interviewing, Melody Golding collected over one hundred personal narratives from men and women who worked and lived on “brown water,” our inland waterways. As photographer, she has taken thousands of photos, of which 130 are included, of the people and boats, and the rivers where they spend their time. The book spans generations of river life—the oldest pilot was born in 1917 and the youngest in 1987—and includes stories from the 1920s to today. The stories begin with the pilots who were “broke in” by early steamboat pilots who were on the river as far back as the late 1800s. The early pilots in this book witnessed the transition from steamboat to diesel boat, while the youngest grew up in the era of GPS and twenty-first-century technology. Among many topics, the pilots reflect movingly on the time spent away from home because of their career, a universal reality for all mariners. As many pilots say when they talk about the river, “I hate her when I’m with her, and I miss her when I’m gone.”

Book excerpt: After the initial release in 1983 of Way's Packet Directory, 1848-1983, the demand was enormous for a similar treatment of the steam towboats that once populated the Mississippi River System. Captain Frederick Way, Jr., aided by Joseph W. Rutter, gathered together this wealth of information concerning steamboats that shoved river barges laden with coal, petroleum products, chemicals, sand, gravel, and similar bulk commodities from the headwaters of the Ohio River to the jetties of the Mississippi. The steam towboats that performed these services have completely disappeared from the scene, their places having been taken by hundreds of modern diesel-propeller towboats, but this thorough and remarkable reference guide helps preserve their history.

For most people such a journey is the stuff that dreams are made of, but for Harlan and Anna Hubbard, it became a cherished reality. In their small river craft, the Hubbards became one with the flowing river and its changing weathers. This book mirrors a life that is simple and independent, strenuous at times, but joyous, with leisure for painting and music, for observation and contemplation.
