Book excerpt: This study formulates conditions for sustainable impacts of inclusive and responsive governance through 'invited spaces' offered by the government and 'claimed spaces' created by the poor. The study questions how increased contributions to poverty reduction and improvement of quality of life for Nairobi citizens can be realised in an equitable and responsible way, while contributing to development of the city and country. To adequately address this two-sided objective of economic growth and poverty reduction in the contemporary context, the study analyses both processes and impacts; moreover it examines impacts in terms of quality of life as well as influence and political rights. The study explores the individually claimed spaces of households in Nairobi's slums, the collectively claimed spaces of hybrid mechanisms for access to peri-urban land and tenure, and the invited spaces of city-wide governance networks.

Book excerpt: Technical and vocational education and training at technical schools are major contributing factors in combating poverty, unemployment, and inequality. The primary purpose of technical and vocational education and training is to prepare students and learners for the world of work and for a smooth transition from education institutions into the workplace. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to create more radical changes in the labor market, experts are calling for a reform of education, including vocational education and training and adult and professional education. New Models for Technical and Vocational Education and Training is an essential scholarly research book that examines TVET and CET colleges and programs that provide intermediate skills to enhance students’ chances of employability and entrepreneurship in Industry 4.0. The book explores knowledge in respect to workforce preparation, digital skills development, teaching and learning of TVET, flexibility and articulation of TVET to respond to work-integrated learning, and reskilling and upskilling to avoid skill mismatches. It is ideal for TVET schools, academicians, curriculum designers, managers, training officers, administrators, vocational professionals, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Leah Komen explores the impact of mobile telephony on the lives of people in rural Kenya. The book analyses the outcomes of complex intersections and interactions between mobile phones, individuals, and the broader society as distinct from the traditional cause-effect relationships in the discourse of development in the changing world. It subverts the traditional notion of synchronic development that ignores target populations' involvement in decision-making and sees development from the lens of developed economies where information and communication technologies like mobile telephones have originated. Komen's analysis advances a diachronic type of development that focuses on human technology's interrelationships instead of the synchronic model that privileges technology as engendering social transformations and development. The diachronic model is fundamentally Maendeleo, a Swahili term denoting process, participation, progress, and growth, and views social transformations and development as an interaction between mobile telephony users and their specific contexts. The book argues that the mobile phone has become an increasingly personalised device. It encourages a sense of community through the sharing of the device by multiple users, promotes co-presence and interpersonal communication, enhances kinship ties and social connectedness, and creates new ways of organising and conducting everyday socioeconomic activities. However, it also can disintegrate relationships and remodel some. This is a book about power negotiation, gender relations, cultural inclinations, and socio-economic dispositions within the context of mobile telephony's domestic use to facilitate social change and development.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. Presenting rigorous and original research, this volume offers key insights into the historical, cultural, social, economic and political forces at play in the creation of world-class ICT innovations in Kenya. Following the arrival of fiber-optic cables in 2009, Digital Kenya examines why the initial entrepreneurial spirit and digital revolution has begun to falter despite support from motivated entrepreneurs, international investors, policy experts and others. Written by engaged scholars and professionals in the field, the book offers 15 eye-opening chapters and 14 one-on-one conversations with entrepreneurs and investors to ask why establishing ICT start-ups on a continental and global scale remains a challenge on the “Silicon Savannah”. The authors present evidence-based recommendations to help Kenya to continue producing globally impactful ICT innovations that improve the lives of those still waiting on the side-lines, and to inspire other nations to do the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines some of the major challenges faced by African education by placing them in two important contexts. First, it explores how new economic dynamics, linked to globalisation, impact upon educational priorities and possibilities. Second, it stresses the need to locate educational policies and practices alongside approaches in other sectors. This leads to an analysis of the intersections between education, training and enterprise development. Through detailed examinations of recent policies and practices in Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, the book shows how different national approaches emerge in spite of apparent convergences in donor agency policy and international policy discourses. Aimed at policy makers and practitioners as well as academics, the book outlines a series of theoretical, policy and practical challenges for the future of African education and its broader role in development.

Book excerpt: This book interrogates the suitability of wireless technologies to implement an eBusiness infrastructure in Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in developing countries, particularly in Kenya. A research model was developed based on literature and information obtained from a pilot study. A preliminary study was conducted to refine the proposed model and inclusion of any variables limiting the suitability of wireless technologies as MSEs' eBusiness infrastructure. The proposed model was empirically tested using data collected using a survey questionnaire and five descriptive case studies. The constructs were assessed for reliability, validity and exploratory factor analysis using SPSS and validated via a confirmatory factor analysis using Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS maximum likelihood method. Most Kenyans live in rural areas of the country with no access to mainstream technologies and a considerable digital divide exists, particularly between the urban and rural areas. This necessitated an intra-country comparison of access and use of wireless technologies in rural and urban MSEs in implementing an eBusiness infrastructure.

Book excerpt: With changing consumer preferences and the focus on developing resilient food systems, food processing is finding its place in key policies, government interventions, global trade, and the overall food and nutritional security. Given this, this new 3-volume collection offers a compilation of emerging and futuristic food processing technologies, presenting fundamental concepts of food technology, trending applications, and a range of interdisciplinary concepts that have found numerous interwoven applications in the food industry. Volume 3 is an exploration of the future of food processing, highlighting certain emerging and disruptive technologies and their gaining influence in the food sector. The first five chapters focus on computers and information technology-linked applications such as CFD modeling, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and blockchain management for the food industry. The book then details selected interesting concepts that have made phenomenal advancements in recent years: approaches for improved delivery of nutrients, micro- and nanofluidics, novel drying technologies, smart and intelligent packaging, as well as 3D food printing technology. The other volumes in the series are Volume 1: Fundamentals of Food Processing Technology, which presents the basics of food preservation, covering hurdle technology, aspects of minimal processing, ohmic heating of foods, edible coatings, and electromagnetics and allied applications in food processing; and Volume 2: Advances in Nonthermal Processing Technologies, which focuses on the interesting field of nonthermal processing and its applications.
