Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State development in Africa is risky, even life-threatening. Heads of state must weigh the advantage of promoting political and economic development against the risk of fortifying dangerous political rivals. This book takes a novel approach to the study of neopatrimonial rule by placing security concerns at the center of state-building. Using quantitative evidence from 44 African countries and in-depth case studies of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Rabinowitz demonstrates that the insecurities of the African state make strategically aligning with rural leaders critical to political success. Leaders who cultivate the goodwill of the countryside are better able to endure sporadic urban unrest, subdue political challengers, minimize ethnic and regional discord, and prevent a military uprising. Such regimes are more likely to build infrastructure needed for economic and political development. In so doing, Rabinowitz upends the long-held assumption that African leaders must cater to urban constituents to secure their rule.

Book excerpt: For the serious student of life here in the Earth School, this work may help you push your own boundaries of beliefs, perceptions and assumptions and lead you into a deeper course of inquiry within the heart and soul of you. It's in large part why you are here. So, I've gathered together three works that explore different aspects of consciousness with a small "c" and along with painting a different perspective of the big "C" in terms of the Cosmic Consciousness, Source or God, however it is you might like to reference it. It is my contribution towards helping to create that little instruction book we all could use. It is my greatest hope that you might find something of value, something to make you think or something that might give you pause to realize you are so much more than you've been taught by conventional religion and various courses of earliest teachings from elementary school and beyond.

In response to prevailing narratives of decline, it reimagines how the church can live its vocation of receiving the abundance God gives us, and sharing that abundance far and wide. It recognises the surprising, exuberant and plentiful things that the Holy Spirit is doing in the world and calls the church to celebrate creation, enjoy culture and share in their flourishing. With a rich theological foundation and borne out in the practical experience of a growing number of local church communities, this groundbreaking book will enable churches to discover fresh ways in which they can become a blessing to the communities they serve.
