Following an introductory discussion of functionalism, there is a review of politically related formal literature: 'Social Choice Theory', 'Game Theory' and some formalized material from substantive political science, discussed in chapters 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The study concludes with a summary of the results of the review, an outline of a preliminary functional model, a 'conceptual sketch' of certain 'essential variables' of politics, and a discussion of the possible future construction of a functional theory of political action.
