Book excerpt: The development of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques and connection details has become a national research focus. With the aging of the interstate system and many bridges on key routes requiring extensive rehabilitation or replacement, the economic impact of construction time has become a key factor in the design of bridges. Several states have successfully standardized the ABC approach with high rates of public satisfaction. Compared to other ABC techniques, the technologies for pre-fabricated bridge decks are relatively mature. However, this technology has not been incorporated in Nevada. The goal of this research project is to develop design guidelines and specifications on the use of pre-fabricated bridge decks for Nevada based on existing techniques. A state-of-the-art literature review summarizing existing practices for the implementation of prefabricated deck panels was prepared. This information was used to assemble a survey that was sent to representatives of all state DOTs. The survey requested information from each DOT on their experience with prefabricated deck panels, connection details that were used, and the field performance of the panels and connections. Information from the literature review and survey was used to develop design specifications and recommendations for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). These specifications were supplemented with a design aid spreadsheet and finite element models to validate the provisions in the specifications and aid in the implementation of this technology. As part of this implementation, two design methods were developed: a simplified (design aid spreadsheet) method and a model based method. Survey results showed that full-depth prefabricated deck panels performed better and saved time compared to partial depth panels. Because of this, full-depth deck panels were the primary focus in this project. Results from the survey showed that guidelines and connection details developed by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Northeast committee (PCI, 2011a) were widely used and led to satisfactory performance. These guidelines were used as the foundation for the proposed design specifications for NDOT. Information from the survey and literature review were used to supplement the PCI guidelines and add information specific to Nevada's needs. The guidelines were used to design full-depth deck panel systems for two existing bridges. The simplified and model based methods were applied to both design examples to determine whether the design specifications could be used to appropriately design full-depth deck systems for different cases. The results from the two design examples showed that the full-depth deck panel systems performed as expected and could be designed using the existing AASHTO and PCI provisions. Additional modeling beyond simple hand calculations was required for skewed and curved bridges. Based on these findings, prefabricated full-depth deck panels are recommended for use in ABC projects in Nevada using the assembled design specifications and design procedures created for this project.

Book excerpt: This research evaluates the use of precast, prestressed bridge deck panels on new and existing precast, prestressed concrete girders. The evaluation focuses on the ease of construction and the ability of the system to develop composite action with the concrete girders. A system developed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute New England Region (PCINER) was chosen for testing from available systems because it is representative of the current geometry of precast bridge deck panels. The CDOT system was evaluated in a series of large scale tests in which the panels were placed on a 40 ft prestressed concrete girder and subjected to three point loading. The CDOT system is compared to a new system developed as part of the research program. The new system addresses durability and ease of construction issues that are problematic with current joint details. The strength and geometry of both the current and new joint details are evaluated and compared in a series of direct shear tests. A final, large scale specimen was designed, constructed, and loaded to evaluate the new system. It was concluded that the behavior of the new system is comparable to that of the CDOT system. In addition, the new system is easy to construct and minimizes deck penetrations, thereby enhancing durability. This research has the potential to impact the way in which the aging highway system is rehabilitated and replaced by reducing the associated time and costs of construction while decreasing disruption to the traveling public.

Book excerpt: The AASHTO strategic plan in 2005 for bridge engineering identified extending the service life of bridges and accelerating bridge construction as two of the grand challenges in bridge engineering. These challenges have the objective of producing safer and more economical bridges at a faster rate with a minimum service life of 75 years and reduced maintenance cost to serve the country's infrastructure needs. Previous studies have shown that a prefabricated full-depth precast concrete deck system is an innovative technique that accelerates the rehabilitation process of a bridge deck, extending its service life with reduced user delays and community disruptions and lowering its life-cycle costs. Previous use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) for bridge applications in the United States has been considered to be efficient and economical because of its superior structural characteristics and durability properties. Full-depth UHPC waffle deck panel systems have been developed over the past three years in Europe and the United States. Subsequently, a single span, 60-ft long and 33-ft wide prototype bridge with full-depth prefabricated UHPC waffle deck panels has been designed and built for a replacement bridge in Wapello County, Iowa. The structural performance characteristics and the constructability of the UHPC waffle deck system and its critical connections were studied through an experimental program at the structural laboratory of Iowa State University (ISU). Two prefabricated full-depth UHPC waffle deck (8 feet by 9 feet 9 inches by 8 inches) panels were connected to 24-ft long precast girders, and the system was tested under service, fatigue, overload, and ultimate loads. Three months after the completion of the bridge with waffle deck system, it was load tested under live loads in February 2012. The measured strain and deflection values were within the acceptable limits, validating the structural performance of the bridge deck. Based on the laboratory test
