It draws on two studies of high school reform models conducted by MDRC, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization, which shed light on promising strategies to support ninth-grade students. Increasing the capacity of high schools to provide extra help for ninth-grade students to catch up, to learn to read well, and to earn credits in English and algebra is critical, as these academic achievements are key predictors of whether students are likely to graduate on time (Quint, 2006). Transitions into high school can be eased when both structural and specialized curricula reforms are in place. This brief offers several take-aways at the state, district, and school levels. A list of additional resources is provided. (Contains 3 endnotes.) [This publication was produced by the National High School Center. For related document, see ED501073.].

Book excerpt: The transition from middle school to high school represents a significant event in the lives of adolescents, one that necessitates support from and collaboration among teachers, parents, counselors, and administrators at both educational levels. Successful transitions place particular emphasis on ninth-grade initiatives and can create one of strongest bridges from middle to high school and beyond. This report is a rolled up version of four National High School Center (NHSC) products that had been previously released as individual pieces related to one of the NHSC focus themes: transitions into high school. Included in this publication are: (1) The First Year of High School: A Quick Stats Fact Sheet (Elizabeth Williams and Scott Richman) [ED501080]; (2) Policy Brief: State and District-Level Support for Successful Transitions Into High School (Corinne Herlihy) [ED501074]; (3) Issue Brief: Toward Ensuring a Smooth Transition Into High School (Corinne Herlihy) [ED501075]; and (4) Snapshot: Managing the Transition to Ninth Grade in a Comprehensive Urban High School (Thomas J. Book excerpt: Students' high school experiences often do not prepare them adequately for postsecondary education and the world of work. Special attention should be paid to increasing the rigor, relevance, and engagement of the high school curriculum, including for students who have traditionally faced barriers to successful postsecondary transitions. This Issue Brief reviews lessons from studies of selected policies and programs designed to improve students' preparation for postsecondary pathways. Special emphasis is placed on ways to help those who traditionally face substantial barriers to success, including low-income students, African American and Latino students, and students with disabilities. A list of additional resources is included. (Contains 1 table and 4 endnotes.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What steps can be taken to assure that 8th graders make a successful transition to 9th grade? More students fail ninth grade than any other grade level. When middle school students took part in high school transition programs with a variety of different articulation activities, fewer students were retained in ninth grade. Ideally, these transition programs include activities that provide students and parents with current information about the new school, provide students with social support and opportunities for peer interaction during the transition, provide opportunities for parent involvement and bring middle school and high school personnel together to learn about one another's curriculum, special programs, requirements and expectations. School leaders can ease students' transition into high school by implementing transition programs that address the needs of students and their parents and that facilitate communication between middle school and high school teachers and support staff. Effective high school transition programs address the following key areas: (1) Providing parents and students with information about the new school; (2) Provide opportunities for peer interaction and social support; (3) Provide opportunities for parent involvement; (4) Provide opportunities for communication between middle and high school teachers and support staff; and (5) Provide academic support for incoming ninth graders. (Contains 5 online resources.).

Book excerpt: The transition into high school is a critical point in the educational pipeline, and ninth-grade can be characterized as one of its leakiest junctures. This policy brief examines how some states and districts are currently easing the transition into high school for students. It focuses on five key challenges that states, districts and schools should address to support a successful transition into high school, particularly for students who are at high risk of failure. A list of additional resources is provided. (Contains 1 endnote.) [This brief was edited by Louise Kennelly and was produced by the National High School Center. For related document, see ED501073.].

Book excerpt: The transition between middle and high school is a defining moment for students on whether they drop out of school or progress to graduation. A majority of the students who eventually fail to graduate fall through the cracks during this transition period. This research brief gives several recommendations on how schools and school districts can help students make successful transitions to high school, including: (1) Districts should explicitly target initiatives and interventions at the ninth grade level, addressing both the academic and environmental challenges of transition; (2) Districts need to sustain a system-wide focus on explicit literacy instruction to improve student outcomes in high school; (3) Districts should combine structural changes with meaningful curricular and instructional supports; (4) Although remediation of struggling students can be a useful tool, a challenging academic curriculum may help keep students engaged and yield achievement gains; (5) Districts should develop student-level indicators/tracking systems to help target support and identify at-risk students before they fall too far off track in the transition to high school; and (6) The federal government and private philanthropy should invest in rigorous studies of how to use data and data systems to improve support and instruction, particularly for students making the transition to high school. (Contains 40 notes.).

Book excerpt: An Evaluation of the Public Schools of the District of Columbia is a comprehensive five-year summative evaluation report for Phase Two of an initiative to evaluate the District of Columbia's public schools. Consistent with the recommendations in the 2011 report A Plan for Evaluating the District of Columbia's Public Schools, this new report describes changes in the public schools during the period from 2009 to 2013. An Evaluation of the Public Schools of the District of Columbia examines business practices, human resources operations and human capital strategies, academic plans, and student achievement. This report identifies what is working well seven years after legislation was enacted to give control of public schools to the mayor of the District of Columbia and which areas need additional attention.

Book excerpt: This book provides educators with an accessible guide to best practices concerning content-based instruction (CBI) models and their use in English learner inclusive classrooms. The author effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice with a critical analysis of practical examples and diverse strategies for the inclusion of English learners into K-12 general education courses. The book also raises controversial questions regarding who is qualified to teach English learners and who is responsible for doing so, looking at the difficulties faced by both general educators and ESL teachers in Inclusive Classrooms. By providing a lens through which both ESL teachers and general educators are able to analyze, compare and contrast a range of widely-employed CBI methods, this book allows teachers to make informed decisions in their EL program development and work with English learners in K-12 schools.

Book excerpt: The first volume in this Early Childhood Education and Care in the 21st Century: International Teaching, Family and Policy Perspectives miniseries provides a snapshot of early childhood education and care from 19 different countries around the world. The intention is to provide a description for the policy and provision for young children and their families in each of the unique contemporary contexts. The selection of countries includes every continent in the world to provide variety across cultures, socio-economic status, location, population and other unique factors. Some chapters also share the development and history of early childhood in their country, including economic and political transitions that lead to changes in early childhood provision and policy. The book provides essential takeaways for early childhood educators, researchers, early childhood organisations, policy makers and those interested to know more about early childhood education within an international perspective.
