Book excerpt: Booting servers from a storage area network (SAN) is being used increasingly in complex data center environments today, due to its significant benefits over the traditional method of booting from local disks. SAN Boot enables organizations to maximize consolidation of their IT resources, minimize their equipment costs, and realize the considerable management benefits of centralizing the boot process. In SAN Boot, you can deploy diskless servers in an environment where the boot disk is located on (often RAID-capable) storage connected to the SAN. The server (initiator) communicates with the storage device (target) through the SAN using the Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA). The system downtime is greatly minimized in case a critical component such as a processor, memory, or host bus adapter fails and needs to be replaced. The system administrator needs to swap only the hardware and reconfigure the HBA's BIOS, switch zoning, and host-port definitions on the storage server. The system image still exists on the logical drive, therefore the server is fully operational after the hardware swap and configuration change is completed. This IBM® Redbooks® publication can help you with the SAN Boot implementation. We present various SAN Boot scenarios using IBM System Storage® products that include DS5000, DS8000®, XIV®, and SVC. The operating systems that are covered include Windows 2008, Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, and VMware.

Book excerpt: Want to learn how to build Web sites fast? This best-selling guide’s visual format and step-by-step, task-based instructions will have you up and running with HTML5 and CSS3 in no time. This Seventh Edition is a major revision, with approximately 125 pages added and substantial updates to (or complete rewrites of) nearly every page from the preceding edition. Authors Elizabeth Castro and Bruce Hyslop use clear instructions, friendly prose, and real-world code samples to teach you HTML and CSS from the ground up. Over the course of 21 chapters you will learn how to: Write semantic HTML, both with elements that have been around for years and ones that are new in HTML5. Prepare images for the Web and add them to your pages. Use CSS to style text, add background colors and images, and implement a multicolumn layout. Build a single site for all users—whether they are using a mobile phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, or other Web-enabled device—based on many of the components of responsive Web design, including CSS3 media queries. Leverage new selectors in CSS3, add Web fonts to your pages with @font-face, and use CSS3 effects such as opacity, background alpha transparency, gradients, rounded corners, drop shadows, shadows inside elements, text shadows, and multiple background images. Improve your site’s accessibility with ARIA landmark roles and other good coding practices. Build forms to solicit input from your visitors. Include media in your pages with the HTML5 audio and video elements. Test and debug your Web pages. Secure a domain name and publish your site. And much more! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation we find ourselves today in the field of microcontrollers had its beginnings in the development of technology of integrated circuits. This development has enabled to store hundreds of thousands of transistors into one chip. That was a precondition for the manufacture of microprocessors and the first computers were made by adding external peripherals such as memory, input/output lines, timers, and others to it. Further increasing of package density resulted in creating an integrated circuit that contained both processors and peripherals. That is how the first chip containing a microcomputer later known as a microcontroller has developed. If you have not done it so far then it is high time to learn what the microcontrollers are and how they operate. Numerous illustrations and practical examples along with a detailed description of the PIC16F887 will make you enjoy your work with the PIC microcontrollers

Book excerpt: A heart-pounding, unputdownable psychological thriller with an astonishing twist When the past catches up, do you run and hide or stand and fight? When a woman is brutally attacked on a lonely country road by an escaped inmate from a nearby psychiatric hospital, Sergeant Davie Gray must track him down before he strikes again. But Gray is already facing a series of deaths connected to legal highs and a local fairground, as well as dealing with his girlfriend Marie's bizarre behaviour. As Gray investigates the crimes, he suspects a horrifying link between Marie and the man on the run - but how can he confront her when she's pushing him away? As a terrified Marie is pulled back into a violent past she thought she'd escaped, she makes an irrevocable decision. And when events come to a head at a house party on Willow Walk, can Gray piece together the puzzle in time to stop the sleepy town of Banktoun being rocked by tragedy once more? PRAISE FOR WILLOW WALK "Unflinching attention to detail lifts Holliday's inventive and compelling second Banktoun novel to a whole new level." - THE SUN, 4-stars "A compelling tale of obsession and dark secrets that grips you from the first chapter and holds you right through to the startling and dramatic conclusion." - AVA MARSH, author of Untouchable "Chillingly nuanced, pulse-poundingly suspenseful, and totally unputdownable." - CrimeThrillerGirl "The kind of book I adore discovering, one that stays with me long after I've finished." - JENNY BLACKHURST, author of How I Lost You "Tense, atmospheric and gripping from page one.
