Book excerpt: Background: Light cured composite resin can be time consuming for bonding orthodontic brackets. A new Blue light diode laser may reduce curing times for composite resins. Hypothesis: The laser will achieve similar bond strengths in half the time and at greater distances as the LED. Methods: 90 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured using Laser and LED curing units at varying times, another 120 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured at varying distances. An Instron machine will be used to test shear bond strength. Results: The laser was not able to achieve similar bond strengths as the LED curing light in half of the curing time. At 5 seconds, the laser had 35% lower bond strengths but was still in the clinically acceptable range. The laser achieved similar bond strengths when the curing tip was at greater distances as when it was close to the bracket-adhesive-tooth interface.

Book excerpt: Objective: To compare the mean bond strengths and mode of bond failure, in vitro, of five bonding systems (MIP 1, Plastic Conditioner 2, Assure 2, Scotchbond 3, and Transbond XT 1), when bonding an orthodontic bracket to an artificially-aged composite resin restoration, with and without mechanical surface preparation with a diamond bur. Methods: Class V buccal composite resin restorations were prepared in 240 upper right central incisor dentoform teeth. The restorations were artificially age d for 35 days, bonded with metal brackets, stored in distilled water at 37°C for 30 days, thermocycled for 500 cycles, and subsequently debonded with an Instron universal testing machine. Results: The mean bond strengths for Transbond, MIP, Plastic Conditioner, Assure, and Scotchbond groups were 12.1, 12.3, 13.3, 17.2, and 17.7 MPa respectively. The mean bond strengths for Transbond+Diamond, MIP+Diamond, Plastic Conditioner+Diamond, Assure+Diamond, and Scotchbond+Diamond groups were 18.5, 16.4, 19.1, 19.5, and 20.7 MPa respectively. ANOVA revealed a statistically significant diffe rence (P d"0.05) among the groups. Conclusions: Mechanically roughening the surface of a composite resin restoration with a diamond bur, provided significantly greater bond strengths, regardless of the bonding resin used. However, Assure and Scotchbond, without diamond bur preparation, provided similar bond strengths to Transbond, MIP and Plastic Conditioner, with diamond bur preparation. 1. 3M Unitek, Monrovia CA 2. The resin veneer offers the advantages of low cost, ability to make clinical repairs, lack of wear to opposing teeth, and ease of fabrication. Clinical use of the resin veneer has been limited die to problems associated with the resin including low resistance to abrasion, high water sorption, a high coefficient of thermal expansion, low proportional limit, and a low modulus of elasticity. Improvements realized in composite resin technology have prompted the introduction of a number of composite resin veneering materials for prosthodontic applications. An electrochemical tin plating technique has been suggested for bonding composite veneering resins in lieu of conventional mechanical retention. The adhesive bonding of veneering resins to castings would prove beneficial by improving esthetics and eliminating the percolation of fluids at the resin-metal interface. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the shear bond strength of a composite resin processed to gold and base metal specimens that were treated with an electro-chemical tin plating technique. uniform specimens were cast in a gold alloy and a base metal. Conventional retentive beads on the gold alloy and electroetching of the base metal served as controls in this investigation.
