Book excerpt: Californians were panicked by the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, and civilian flights within 200 miles of the coast were immediately terminated. Airfields were commandeered and new ones hastily built. One of these was the Lomita Flight Strip, known today as Zamperini Field, the Torrance Municipal Airport, or TOA. This 490-acre parcel sent four squadrons of P-38 fighter pilots off to war with one commanded by the judge of the Charles Manson trial, an ex-Flying Tiger. Six other pilots became generals, two became commandants of cadets at the Air Force Academy, and one became the only fighter pilot with combat victories in both World War II and the Vietnam War. Japanese Americans returning from World War II internment camps found temporary housing at the field, and the world's largest manufacturer of civilian helicopters settled there in 1973. The first runway takeoff of a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft was pioneered at TOA, and aerobatic champ Bob Herendeen trained at the site.

Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the impressive authorship team of Professor Laurie L. Levenson and Justice Brian M. Hoffstadt have produced a casebook that is everything an evidence professor, and the professor’s students, would want in a book – clarity in explaining the rules of evidence, examples to test and reinforce their understanding of the rules, carefully edited cases demonstrating the application of the rules, and discussion of complications in application of the rules. Evidence Law: Policy, Practice, and Problems is a straightforward and accessible casebook that is consistent and clear in how it teaches evidence. This book provides a suitable foundation for most students to learn and apply, both in litigation and transactional practices, federal and state evidence laws. This is a masterful, comprehensive, and stimulating teaching tool, with its unique approach of (1) providing the rule; (2) explaining the basis for the rule; (3) demonstrating how it is to be applied; (4) discussing any complications in its application; and (5) providing short, where appropriate, carefully edited cases, regarding the rule. Cases in the book serve to affirm the rule, not provide subtle or exceptional applications of it. Highlights of the First Edition: Sets forth the evidence rules, the rationale for them, examples of their applications, cases demonstrating their use in civil and criminal litigation, and plenty of problems for classroom discussion and review Each chapter contains summary charts and diagrams to help students follow the requirements and apply the rules Carefully edited cases to ensure clarity in the application of the rules is provided without overwhelming the reader Summary chapter where students can see the rules applied to a sample trial Professors and students will benefit from: An assortment of review questions that professors and students can use to reinforce the students’ understanding of the evidence rules Short readings regarding cutting-edge areas of evidence law Examples of contemporary challenges in applying the evidence rules Step-by-step approach for dealing with evidence issues Thorough and clear presentation of hearsay, its exceptions, and its interaction with the right of confrontation Comparisons with the rules for major state jurisdictions

Book excerpt: He must have been in his early thirties or maybe even his late thirties. His jaw was broad and masculine and it appeared he had come from a line of warriors. Tall and broad of shoulder and chest, this man had to be one that was desired by many women. Toes dug into the wet sand and his muscles pumped in a steady rhythm while his movement was graceful and smooth. She saw the man tumble and fall. He now had her full attention as she watched to see if he had only fallen and would rise again, to run on, but it didn't happen. His body lay inert and still on the sand. Opening the sliding glass door immediately, she ran full tilt toward the water's edge and the man who hadn't moved.

Feuding over claims to the Rancho San Pedro continued for seventy-three years. The Vanderlip family's forty-year development of the Palos Verdes Peninsula resulted in one of California's wealthiest and most well-kept enclaves of coastal cities. Marineland of the Pacific on the Peninsula's end was one of the West Coast's more popular tourism draws before its controversial closing. But that's only the beginning. In this exciting compilation of articles, authors Bruce and Maureen Megowan reveal some of the intriguing secrets and little-known facts nestled within the hills, valleys and nearby cities of this beautiful area. Discover some of the fascinating stories about the development of the South Bay and Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation noise remains the primary hindrance to expansion of airport and airspace capacity in the United States. This book describes the development and practice of U.S. aircraft noise regulation, as well as the practical consequences of regulatory policy. Starting in the pre-jet transport era, the book traces the development of the modern framework for characterizing, standardizing, predicting, disclosing, and mitigating aircraft noise and its effects on airport-vicinity communities. Among other matters, the book treats noise-related consequences of the 1978 deregulation of the airline industry; prediction and mitigation of community reaction to airport noise; land use compatibility planning; recent research and industry trends; and some suggestions for potential improvements to current policy. Initial chapters describe the assumptions underlying aircraft noise regulation, and lay out the chronology of U.S. aircraft noise regulatory practice. Later chapters provide overviews of population-level effects of aviation noise, including health effects, speech and sleep interference, and annoyance. Readers will learn why predictions of the prevalence of aircraft noise-induced annoyance have systematically underestimated adverse community response to aircraft noise, and how such underestimation has complicated approval and funding of airport and airspace improvement projects. They will also learn why attempts at noise-compatible land use planning are seldom fully successful.
