Book excerpt: Drawing upon his extraordinary life growing up in Italy, studying the classics at St. Louis University in Naples, and becoming ordained as a Vocationist priest, Fr. Virgil Furfaro shares his innermost thoughts and emotions in this stirring collection of poetry, A Tormented Soul. Furfaro is a true renaissance man—a "consummate doer, thinker, and dreamer" as described by one of his parishioners—and with his poetry proposes a return to the classical ideals, ones that will lead the sterile modern age back to the great values and legends of the past. With his nostalgic look toward the ancient world, Furfaro proposes that yesterday's poetry become today's reality. Of his poetry, Furfaro writes that it "is born from combining the fertile moments of my mind with a psychological, physical, and spiritual anguish that has characterized and tormented me for most of my life." This statement is personified within such poems as "A Cross to See" which explores not only this holiest of Christian symbols, but Furfaro's own tribulations and "Disenchantment," a haunting verse that reveals the deceptiveness of nature. At once powerful in scope, yet elegant in its simplicity, A Tormented Soul reaches to the very essence of our souls, plucks the strings of our hearts, and sets us upon the path to enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The findings, in essence, reveal a person of dual identity, with unconscious forces playing a prominent role and holding the key to Voltaire's paradoxical character. His conscious, rational, and cognitively astute self - the standard-bearer of the philosophes in their epochal struggle for freedom - was also responsible for sealing off the subconscious portion of the self associated with traumatic experiences. The elaborate characterological structure erected to ward off consciously unacceptable impulses and, simultaneously, to obtain satisfaction of frustrated needs, is the subject of this study. The price he had to pay for the drastic disconnect between the two selves was formidable. In this volume, much attention is devoted to the unconventional ways and phantasmal stratagems adopted for dealing with the internal pressure of repressed impulses and a perpetual quest for affectional support. Some of these maneuvers show tenuous contact with social reality, as do his bizarre psychosomatic symptoms and bold rationalizations in the Memoirs." "Fortunately for the Western world, Voltaire's prodigious mind was put to use in rattling the cage of the intolerant and rigidly backward theocratic/political system. Due to his immense popularity as a playwright, and his agile participation in current events through a flood of pamphlets, leaflets, and occasional pieces, together with the gigantic volume and engaging style of his correspondence, the name Voltaire became synonymous with the Age of Enlightenment. The dual identity did not interfere with his effectiveness as a humanist. In fact, there is reason to believe that the energy invested in fighting l'infame, the oppressive authority of Church and State, was augmented by a dynamic driving force of the hidden self: the never verbalized and consciously never processed bitter resentment of paternal coercion. Principles and methods of depth psychology, as applied in the study, are elucidated and illustrated."--Jacket.

Sometimes, their dark tales have a (relatively) happy end where peace or at least acceptance is found. At other times, a more macabre end foretells more suffering to come. Each chilling story is complete, standalone, and sure to leave you with an eerie feeling. This bundle contains the FIRST THREE stories in the series for you to try. #1 | The Forgotten Girl Chihiro returns to the castle that was once her home. High on the walls, the Daimo's men stand guard, but they mustn't see her! Entering the castle through a secret passageway the young woman follows a path of tears and blood while she looks for redemption. #2 | The Third Hour Ann prepares to hunt for a beast and cut out its heart, which she needs to keep herself and her family safe. She has only her pistol, knife, and sharp wits to keep her alive—and she'll need 'em all! But the bloodthirsty beasts that roam the street aren't the only threat out there. She has to watch the hour and make haste, or else... #3| The Waiting When Mira wakes up, she finds herself in a strange and terrifying place. Is this a dream? In the years following his death, her father succumbed to alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver and her younger brother, Mark, struggled with heroin addiction. Missie swore she would do everything in her power to ensure that her children did not follow in their footsteps, then watched in despair as her son John began abusing alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy, and cocaine. In Tormented Souls, Missie's recollections of these painful events are interwoven with Mark and John's accounts of their trials and eventual recoveries. Their testimonies show us how it is possible for addicts to get clean even after years of using, and how they and their loved ones can finally heal.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of Glen Sabre Valance, the last man to be hanged in South Australia in 1964. Dead at age twenty one, this young man was my stepbrother. The story of his life needs to be told. His sad, abusive upbringing molded him into the angry young man he eventually became. His story of abandonment and abuse at the hands of our mother and the schools, orphanages and homes he was placed in should not go unheard. In telling his story, I then also tell mine as we both had the same abusive mother, but due to circumstances, our destinies took two very different directions. I was too young to be able to help my older stepbrother in 1964, but after all these years my heart goes out to him and every time I read the last comments in the media before he hanged, stating he was a callous killer, my heart goes out to him because I knew the real person he was and what occurred through his life which helped lead to this terrible crime.

Book excerpt: Arnold Krowneski is taken under the wing of his high school art teacher, Mrs. M. She sees great potential in his ability, so she introduces him to another friend, who owns an art gallery of great renown, one Mr. George Zukor, who in turn introduces the boy to the world of art. George promotes him, in an attempt to make his name synonymous with Dali and Picasso. Arnie's work was equal to these two giants of the art world, but his style was quite different. His work never had to be explained. You knew what it was the moment you saw it. The color, the subject, the story it told was like magic and you could get lost in a dream, just looking at them. He used a number of models for realism. He would pose them on a couch or a chair, but frequently ended up in bed with them. Some thing about him seemed to intrigue the ladies. So come along on his ride toward the top, to fame and riches. See the beauty in many of the things he saw on the way, and meet the people who would alter his, day- to-day existence, on his skyrocket to get there.

Book excerpt: Back in the car and heading to Joe’s place, Joe noticed a Bible sitting between them in the seat. Grace detected his glance: “Do you read the Good Book often?” she asked Joe. “No ma’am; not since I was a little boy,” Joe replied through a yawn. “Well, if you don’t have one you can have mine,” she told him with a cheery grin. Joe was bemused. “No, that’s okay. I have one. My mom got it for me when I was six years old.” Grace looked at him. “And you still have it? That’s amazing.” Joe didn’t understand what was so amazing about it. “It’s in a box somewhere.” They were pulling into the apartment complex as Grace said, “I learn something new about God every time I read the Word.” Undoing his seatbelt Joe mumbled, “I know all I need to know about God.” Joe Morgan wakes up from nightmares about the day in church when he was ten years old and the pastor yelled about a sin that can’t be forgiven. Since then, he has left the idea of God far behind, much more concerned with taking care of his self than with running after a Being who damns His creatures to hell. Joe lives the small town life, going to the same bar after work every week with his friend Ray and holding back his feelings for his coworker, Nicole. He’s too caught up in the relationship they already have to risk pushing it into romance. What Joe doesn’t know is that everything is about to change—what he thinks about Nicole, about himself and most of all, about God. How can a stolen truck and two men in the hospital change Joe’s humdrum life? Read Tortured Soul to find out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story begins in my home state of Maryland, where I was the youngest of three children. From my earliest memories, I was the victim of severe abuse at the hands of my birth father, which I endured throughout my adolescent years. During this time I was visited by two angels who have accompanied me my entire life. They told me that I would suffer many things and be hated by all men, but if I kept my faith in God, I would have a special place in heaven. Once my mother left my birth father, she moved us to her mother's house in Washington, D.C. Then my mother married my second father, who was from Germany. We moved back to Maryland, but he had a serious drinking problem and he committed suicide. She then married our third father and we moved to Florida, where he too became abusive. When our grandmother died, we moved back to Maryland. My third stepfather continually beat me. It became so bad, I had to live in the woods in the winter and eat out of trash cans. After I got a job, my mother took most of my paycheck for her husband's drinking and gambling money. This story of extreme child abuse promises to take you on a journey through the eyes of a child as the victim, to the young adult as the survivor. My sole purpose and motivation is to help child abuse victims and help those more fortunate to understand the victims! First-time author George Colby Hoffman now lives in Florida. His next book is titled From Exercise to Competitive Bodybuilding for the over 50. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/GeorgeColbyHoffman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Prayers to Players was written with the hope that black men would see beyond what is obvious with their physical eyes and into the world where the answers really are""the spiritual realm. It is the realm of the spirit where too many black men are deficient. Spiritual deficiencies lead to mental (thought) deficiencies because right and wrong begin in the spiritual realm. Put another way, what we hold in our hearts lead to what transpires in our lives. Our belief systems are based on negative information perpetuated by our own people. Not only is the negative information perpetuated but it is acted upon as truth. Our "truths" are at odds with the truths of the Lord; this is to our detriment. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to mass incarceration of black men, young and old. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to the mass murders of black men and teenagers at the hands of other black men and teenagers. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to single-parent homes and poverty. Our truths have led to impregnating black women we do not love and bear children we do not take responsibility for. Our truths do not allow us to take responsibility for ourselves, but it does allow us to blame other people for our mistakes and shortcomings. We fight an enemy, physically who is spiritually based; therefore, we cannot see "him", the devil. From Prayers to Players is not a condemnation of black men; it is meant to be a spiritual awakening for black men. It is not a denial of racism, but racism is a flammable liquid that we, black men, provide a match to. Put another way, if someone else provides the flammable liquid, racism could not ignite without us putting a match to it, (we are responsibility too). Most of our racism is aimed at ourselves; our self-perception is in agreement with demonic influences. A lack of self-love leads to a lack of love for others. Men, through God, must be willing to lead and mentor other black men. If we mentor men through God, black people will follow.
