The book analyzes the topological aspects to identify and quantify these effects in terms of topology metrics. The topological materials are ubiquitous and range from (i) de novo nanoscale allotropes of carbons in various forms such as nanotubes, nanorings, nanohorns, nanowalls, peapods, graphene, etc. to (ii) metallo-organic frameworks, (iii) helical gold nanotubes, (iv) Möbius conjugated polymers, (v) block co-polymers, (vi) supramolecular assemblies, to (vii) a variety of biological and soft-matter systems, e.g. foams and cellular materials, vesicles of different shapes and genera, biomimetic membranes, and filaments, (viii) topological insulators and topological superconductors, (ix) a variety of Dirac materials including Dirac and Weyl semimetals, as well as (x) knots and network structures. Topological databases and algorithms to model such materials have been also established in this book. In order to understand and properly characterize these important emergent materials, it is necessary to go far beyond the traditional paradigm of microscopic structure–property–function relationships to a paradigm that explicitly incorporates topological aspects from the outset to characterize and/or predict the physical properties and currently untapped functionalities of these advanced materials. Simulation and modeling tools including quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, 3D visualization and tomography are also indispensable. These concepts have found applications in condensed matter physics, materials science and engineering, physical chemistry and biophysics, and the various topics covered in the book have potential applications in connection with novel synthesis techniques, sensing and catalysis. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the exploration of nontrivial spin dynamics in graphene-based devices and topological materials, using realistic theoretical models and state-of-the-art quantum transport methodologies. The main outcomes of this work are: (i) the analysis of the crossover from diffusive to ballistic spin transport regimes in ultraclean graphene nonlocal devices, and (ii) investigation of spin transport and spin dynamics phenomena (such as the (quantum) spin Hall effect) in novel topological materials, such as monolayer Weyl semimetals WeTe2 and MoTe2. Indeed, the ballistic spin transport results are key for further interpretation of ultraclean spintronic devices, and will enable extracting precise values of spin diffusion lengths in diffusive transport and guide experiments in the (quasi)ballistic regime. Furthermore, the thesis provides an in-depth theoretical interpretation of puzzling huge measured efficiencies of the spin Hall effect in MoTe2, as well as a prediction of a novel canted quantum spin Hall effect in WTe2 with spins pointing in the yz plane.

Book excerpt: Our study reveals the first magnetic nodal-line state in GdSbTe where combination of broken Tsymmetry and roto-inversion symmetry provides the topological protection. Similar to the Fermi arc in Weyl semimetal, drumhead surface state is known as the characteristic signature of TNLS. Using ARPES and quantum oscillation study, we discuss the first in-plane and clean drumhead surface state in SrAs3. Furthermore, all the above discussed topological states are observed in different materials. We discuss our ARPES and first-principles study to identify weak and strong topological insulator state along with a Dirac node arc in Hf2Te2P.

The unique properties of TIs make them attractive not only for studying various fundamental phenomena in condensed matter and particle physics, but also as promising candidates for applications ranging from spintronics to quantum computation. Within the topological insulator realm, a great deal of focus has been placed on discovering new quantum materials, however, ideal multi-modal quantum materials have yet to be found. Here we study [alpha]-PdBi2, KFe2Te2, and DySb compounds including others within these families with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) complimented by first principles calculations. We observe unique phase changes and phenomena across their transition temperatures. Our work paves a new direction in material discovery and application related to their unique electronic properties.
