Book Synopsis Architecture, Ceremonial, and Power by : Gülru Necipoğlu
Download or read book Architecture, Ceremonial, and Power written by Gülru Necipoğlu and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1991 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Necipoglu demonstrates the palace's role as a vast stage for the enactment of a ceremonial that emphasized the sultan's absolute power and his aloofness from the outside world. In the absence of the monumentality, axiality, and rational geometric planning principles now usually associated with imperial architecture, the author's deciphering of the palace's iconography is all the more revealing.
Book Synopsis The Topkapi Scroll by : Gülru Necipoğlu
Download or read book The Topkapi Scroll written by Gülru Necipoğlu and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.

Book Synopsis The Topkapı Qurʾān Manuscript H.S. 32 by : Rami Hussein Halaseh
Download or read book The Topkapı Qurʾān Manuscript H.S. 32 written by Rami Hussein Halaseh and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a comprehensive and systematic examination of a revered Qurʾān manuscript, commonly attributed to the third Islamic Caliph, ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān (d. 35/656), housed at the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul, Türkiye (identified as H.S. 32). Halaseh offers a meticulous analysis of the manuscript’s codicological, paleographic, and orthographic characteristics, explores its emendations, production date, and traces the manuscript’s journey first to Cairo and then to Istanbul. Additionally, the study examines and categorizes its textual variants, including what are considered today as non-canonical and some that are not previously attested in the major qirāʾāt literature. This work not only sheds light on the transmission of the Qurʾānic text but also establishes a comprehensive framework for researching Qurʾān manuscripts. By integrating methods for examining these manuscripts as both physical artifacts and scriptural texts, Halaseh presents a holistic methodological approach to their scholarly study.
Download or read book Istanbul Topkapi written by Steit Slings and published by Steit Slings. This book was released on with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topkapi is both the name of the Ottoman palace as it is the name of one of the main ancients gates to the city. In modern day there is a busy bus and tram hub at this gate where people change lines to enter or leave the old center. In the early summer of 1996 I walked from Topkapi Gate to Topkapi Palace, documenting this 7 Km walk into the old city. The walk starts at the Topkapi T4 Tramway and leads via the Turgut Özal Millet Caddesi, Ordu Cadessi onto the Yéniçeriler Caddesi to end at the gate to the Topkapi Palace. Along the route many old buildings and landmarks are crossed with Sultanahmet Square, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia amongst them. As with the Tokio series these pictures were taken long ago in 1996 and have been processed in 2020. They now form a look into the Istanbul of the recent past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Light of Day was the basis for Jules Dassin’s classic film, Topkapi. When Arthur Abdel Simpson first spots Harper in the Athens airport, he recognizes him as a tourist unfamiliar with city and in need of a private driver. In other words, the perfect mark for Simpson’s brand of entrepreneurship. But Harper proves to be more the spider than the fly when he catches Simpson riffling his wallet for traveler’s checks. Soon Simpson finds himself blackmailed into driving a suspicious car across the Turkish border. Then, when he is caught again, this time by the police, he faces a choice: cooperate with the Turks and spy on his erstwhile colleagues or end up in one of Turkey’s notorious prisons. The authorities suspect an attempted coup, but Harper and his gang of international jewel thieves have planned something both less sinister and much, much more audacious.
