Book excerpt: From its inception in 1966, the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) has grown to employ approximately 20,000 workers annually, the majority from Mexico. The program has been hailed as a model that alleviates human rights concerns because, under contract, SAWP workers travel legally, receive health benefits, contribute to pensions, are represented by Canadian consular officials, and rate the program favorably. Tomorrow We're All Going to the Harvest takes us behind the ideology and examines the daily lives of SAWP workers from Tlaxcala, Mexico (one of the leading sending states), observing the great personal and family price paid in order to experience a temporary rise in a standard of living. The book also observes the disparities of a gutted Mexican countryside versus the flourishing agriculture in Canada, where farm labor demand remains high. Drawn from extensive surveys and nearly two hundred interviews, ethnographic work in Ontario (destination of over 77 percent of migrants in the author's sample), and quantitative data, this is much more than a case study; it situates the Tlaxcala-Canada exchange within the broader issues of migration, economics, and cultural currents. Bringing to light the historical genesis of "complementary" labor markets and the contradictory positioning of Mexican government representatives, Leigh Binford also explores the language barriers and nonexistent worker networks in Canada, as well as the physical realities of the work itself, making this book a complete portrait of a provocative segment of migrant labor.

Book excerpt: After thousands of years of faith on a promise that God would return, think how would the media, the world, the religious hierarchy, and you personally react to receiving a Prophet in today's technological age. A Prophet that announced the Rapture was coming now, as opposed to a mythical promise of some future event. What if the Prophet proclaimed that God's message had been corrupted and was far shorter and simpler than the world religions had taught? Reverend Bill Parks, a young minister in a small, farming community of West Texas, is requested to observe a patient in the local hospital that is reportedly talking in tongues. Dr. Janet Mercer and Rev. Bill Parks jointly attend to and interview the self-proclaimed Prophet, Abraham. The recording of the interviews find their way on to the Internet, where they go viral throughout the world. Bill and Janet find themselves mystically drawn to each other through the process and unintentionally are labeled and eventually become "God's Warriors". They are propelled into spreading God's Message by demand of the flocking masses through gatherings at major stadiums. There God begins to manifest Himself through supernatural events. Bill and Janet must resists the negative attacks by the media, many of the religious hierarchy, and large segments of the general non-believing populations, but God protects them in their efforts to spread His word. Follow the events through to its conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic story of the American wheat harvest, the politics of food, and the culture of the Great Plains For over one hundred years, the Mockett family has owned a seven-thousand-acre wheat farm in the panhandle of Nebraska, where Marie Mutsuki Mockett’s father was raised. Mockett, who grew up in bohemian Carmel, California, with her father and her Japanese mother, knew little about farming when she inherited this land. Her father had all but forsworn it. In American Harvest, Mockett accompanies a group of evangelical Christian wheat harvesters through the heartland at the invitation of Eric Wolgemuth, the conservative farmer who has cut her family’s fields for decades. As Mockett follows Wolgemuth’s crew on the trail of ripening wheat from Texas to Idaho, they contemplate what Wolgemuth refers to as “the divide,” inadvertently peeling back layers of the American story to expose its contradictions and unhealed wounds. She joins the crew in the fields, attends church, and struggles to adapt to the rhythms of rural life, all the while continually reminded of her own status as a person who signals “not white,” but who people she encounters can’t quite categorize. American Harvest is an extraordinary evocation of the land and a thoughtful exploration of ingrained beliefs, from evangelical skepticism of evolution to cosmopolitan assumptions about food production and farming. With exquisite lyricism and humanity, this astonishing book attempts to reconcile competing versions of our national story.

Book excerpt: REED GRASS is an account of a young destitute boy, born in a small village in British India. In an engaging and powerful narration, the author walks you through bridle-paths of farmland, narrow lanes of villages, country markets of peasants and into the life of village folk ridden with deprivation, grief and joy. He leads you through towns and cities, casting a lingering spell, as the young boy grows into a man, braving the drudgeries of his life. He experiences the travails of independence, heat of the Partition of India, and grows old, pursuing his aspirations only to discover that the erosion of human values and decay in mutual relationships, over time, has gripped the nation. It touches a new low in his own family of four sons and two daughters. Reed Grass, a deeply moving saga of a Muslim family peopled with unforgettable characters, set in pre and post independent India will linger with you long after you have turned the last page. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Christian Book Award for Bible of the Year. The Swindoll Study Bible offers the best of Chuck Swindoll's wit, charm, pastoral insight, and wise biblical study directly to you as you study God's Word. Chuck's warm, personal style comes across on every page, and his informed, practical insights get straight to the heart of the Bible's message for the world today. Reading each part of this study Bible is like hearing Chuck speak God's Word directly to your heart. It will both encourage readers' faith and draw them deeper into the study of God's Word. In Chuck's own words: "This study Bible was designed with you in mind. As you read the Scriptures, imagine my sitting beside you and sharing personal stories, important insights, and hard-earned lessons that will encourage you to walk more closely with Jesus Christ. You'll discover the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the Bible: Who wrote it and when? What does it mean, and where did its events occur? Why should I trust it? And most importantly, how can I apply it today? "It's that last question more than any other that has fed my passion to publish this Bible. My primary focus in ministry has been teaching biblical insight for living . . . for genuine life change. After all, that's why God has communicated His Word to us--so that we may become like His Son, Jesus Christ, the central figure of this Book." Free app with purchase!
