This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military cemeteries are one of the most prominent cultural landscapes of Israel. Their story reflects largely the main social processes that Israeli society has been undergoing since the War of Independence (1948) until today. Until the end of the 1970s, the military tombstones and their surroundings were uniform and equal, according to rules set by the State. However, since the 1980s families of the fallen soldiers started to add on the tombstone personal expressions, as well as personal objects, photographs, military artifacts etc. Thus the military tombstone and the Israeli military cemetery became one of the expressions of the dramatic transformation, from a society which emphasized the importance of the collective, to a society which intensifies the significance of the individual. The book is based on many archival documents, as well as interviews and photographs, all of which shed light on one of the most sensitive issues in Israeli society and express its importance as a central component of Israeli identity.

Book excerpt: Winner, 2007 Albert Hourani Book Award, Middle East Studies Association Winner, 2008 Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in Analytical-Descriptive Studies, American Academy of Religion Winner, 2011 John Nicholas Brown Prize, Medieval Academy of America Winner, 2008 Ralph Waldo Emerson Award, Phi Beta Kappa Shortlisted, 2008 Best First Book in the History of Religions, American Academy of Religion Longlisted, 2008 Cundill International Prize and Lecture in HIstory at McGill University In his probing study of the role of death rites in the making of Islamic society, Leor Halevi imaginatively plays prescriptive texts against material culture and advances new ways of interpreting highly contested sources. His original research reveals that religious scholars of the early Islamic period produced codes of funerary law not only to define the handling of a Muslim corpse but also to transform everyday urban practices. Relying on oral traditions, these scholars established new social patterns in the cities of Arabia, Mesopotamia, and the eastern Mediterranean. They distinguished Islamic rites from Christian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian rites and changed the way men and women interacted publicly and privately. In each chapter Halevi explores a different layer of human interaction, following the movement of the corpse from the deathbed to the grave. In the process he analyzes the real and imaginary relationships between husbands and wives, prayer leaders and mourners, and even dreamers and the dead. He describes how Muslims wailed for the deceased, prepared corpses for burial, marched in funerary processions, and prayed for the dead, highlighting the specific economic and political factors involved in these rituals as well as key religious and sexual divisions. Offering a unique perspective on the making of Islamic social and religious ideals during this early period, Halevi forges a fascinating link between the development of funerary rites and the efforts of an emerging religion to carve out its own, distinct identity. Muhammad's Grave is a groundbreaking history of the rise of Islam and the roots of contemporary Muslim attitudes toward the body and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most valuable information available for genealogical and biographical research is that which is found inscribed on tombstones. It is often intriguing to speculate about any reasons for the choice of epitaph, cited scripture, or craft of monument - some of them being quite ingenious or ornate. This volume continues a series of tombstone inscriptions taken from monuments within the present limits of the City of Alexandria. It contains background discussion, inscription and support data for the following burial grounds: Bethel Cemetery. Bethel Cemetery was established in 1885 and is the resting place for over 10,000 burials. Data was taken from tombstones and burial permits. Each entry may include date of death and birth, age, cause of death, plot location, burial permit number, residence, lace of birth, and place of death. Consult other volumes in this series for additional data on other burial grounds, including nearly three dozen that have been destroyed or abandoned.

Book excerpt: MOTHER'S MILK? What happens when the rules of boundaries and limitations do not govern our decisions? What happens when we do not receive the love, protection and guidance that we should have as children? Will we neglect our children also? What kind of people are we likely to become? Whether innocent or guilty, we must realize that all People (both good and bad, regardless of race, gender, economic status, or religious beliefs) have one commonality that makes them the same. All people began in the womb. Thus begins LaTesha Michelle's in-depth exploration of God's revelation to her of how the state of the world is directly related to the womb. In her new book, Mother's Milk, LaTesha Michelle plainly breaks down God's system for raising children, leaving no stone unturned from the pit to the pulpit, by combining Scripture along with practical instruction on how to be the mother/father and child God intends for you to be. Using real life illustrations she shows the benefits of raising children God's way as well as the consequences of not. As the world moves rapidly toward more increasingly shameful, and perilous times, it is imperative that we understand how we've come to this unfortunate state we're in, as well as learning how to be a part of the healing process one seed at a time. Mother's Milk is not just for mothers, but it is an absolute "must-read" for anyone who desires to know why they are who they are, good or bad, from the very beginning. Enlighten your knowledge, heighten your awareness and be transformed in your thinking, thus finding the true meaning of success. We must go back to the womb to go forward in life, and truly become born again!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on big data implications for computational social science and humanities from management to usage. The first part of the book covers geographic data, text corpus data, and social media data, and exemplifies their concrete applications in a wide range of fields including anthropology, economics, finance, geography, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, public health, and mass communications. The second part of the book provides a panoramic view of the development of big data in the fields of computational social sciences and humanities. The following questions are addressed: why is there a need for novel data governance for this new type of data?, why is big data important for social scientists?, and how will it revolutionize the way social scientists conduct research? With the advent of the information age and technologies such as Web 2.0, ubiquitous computing, wearable devices, and the Internet of Things, digital society has fundamentally changed what we now know as "data", the very use of this data, and what we now call "knowledge". Big data has become the standard in social sciences, and has made these sciences more computational. Big Data in Computational Social Science and Humanities will appeal to graduate students and researchers working in the many subfields of the social sciences and humanities.
