Book Synopsis Distribution of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) in Relation to Wild Weedy Hosts and Susceptible Crops Over a Large Agricultural Landscape by :
Download or read book Distribution of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) in Relation to Wild Weedy Hosts and Susceptible Crops Over a Large Agricultural Landscape written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is an important agronomic and horticultural pest in NC and other parts of the world. Many have speculated that management of weedy species that host the virus may aid in decreasing TSWV occurrence on a farm. In May of 2003 and 2004, weedy species were sampled around six fields, two fields per replication, at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) in Goldsboro, NC, using a 15 m x 15 m grid to map the overwintering pattern of TSWV on the farm. Weeds were tested for TSWV infection and weed density ratings were assigned in each grid cell. Indicator plants (tomato and peanut) were used to map TSWV occurrence within the fields. Thrips movement was monitored with sticky traps to reveal spatial patterns of movement across the farm and, along with indictor plants, were evaluated biweekly through the summers of 2003 and 2004 to monitor temporal movement/occurrence. Plots were located at field edges and in field centers to detect the differences between trivial movement of infected thrips and movement up to 60 m from bordering weedy hosts. TSWV occurrence was equally likely to be found in the center versus the edge plots, revealing that complete eradication of host species up to 60 m from a field may not aid in decreasing TSWV in a field. TSWV occurrence in and around the three replications that were spread across the farm revealed an effect of replication in 2003 when more virus was found in the southern-most replication. Ranunculus sardous (hairy buttercup) tested positive most often compared to all other weed species tested and was also found in the highest density surrounding the southern-most replication.
Book Synopsis Emerging and Reemerging Viral Pathogens by : Moulay Mustapha Ennaji

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging and Reemerging Viral Pathogens: Applied Virology Approaches Related to Human, Animal and Environmental Pathogens, Volume Two presents new research information on viruses and their impact on the scientific community. It provides a reference book on certain viruses in humans, animals and vegetal, along with a comprehensive discussion on interspecies interactions. The book then looks at the drug, vaccine and bioinformatical strategies that can be used against these viruses, giving the reader a clear understanding of transmission. The book's end goal is to create awareness that the appearance of newly transmissible pathogens is a global risk that requires shared/adoptable policies for prevention and control. Covers most emerging viral disease in humans, animals and plants Provides the most advanced tools and techniques in molecular virology and the modeling of viruses Creates awareness that the appearance of new transmissible pathogens is a global risk Highlights the need to adopt shared policies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases

Book Synopsis Towards Understanding Plant-Virus Interactions by : Marco Catoni
Download or read book Towards Understanding Plant-Virus Interactions written by Marco Catoni and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is a thrips-transmitted tripartite RNA virus with a broad panel of host plants including several Solanaceae, one of the most economically important plant families and the most valuable in terms of vegetable crops. TSWV is one of the major causes of crop losses in tomato and several other vegetables worldwide. The study of the interaction between plant and viruses, in a context that can occur in nature, will provide the knowledge to evolve new defence strategy in agriculture. In this work plant-virus interactions have been investigates with different approaches. Starting from a wide comparison on the gene expression profile on leaves and roots, the level of the main plant hormones involved in defence was measured and discussed. The interference in gene expression originated by the concurrent presence of TSWV and a fungal symbiont on the same host plant was also analyzed. This work should be useful for who is working on applicative development of crop defence strategy based on genetic, or who is interested to highlight the plant response to infection in a complex multi-organism context.

Book Synopsis Thrips Biology and Management by : Bruce L. Parker
Download or read book Thrips Biology and Management written by Bruce L. Parker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrips (fhysanoptera) are very small insects, widespread throughout the world with a preponderance of tropical species, many temperate ones, and even a few living in arctic regions. Of the approximately 5,000 species so far identified, only a few hundred are crop pests, causing serious damage or transmitting diseases to growing crops and harvestable produce in most countries. Their fringed wings confer a natural ability to disperse widely, blown by the wind. Their minute size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to detect either in the field or in fresh vegetation transported during international trade of vegetables, fruit and ornamental flowers. Many species have now spread from their original natural habitats and hosts to favorable new environments where they often reproduce rapidly to develop intense damaging infestations that are costly to control. Over the past decade there have been several spectacular examples of this. The western flower thrips has expanded its range from the North American continent to Europe, Australia and South Africa. Thrips palmi has spread from its presumed origin, the island of Sumatra, to the coast of Florida, and threatens to extend its distribution throughout North and South America. Pear thrips, a known orchard pest of Europe and the western United States and Canada has recently become a major defoliator of hardwood trees in Vermont and the neighboring states. Local outbreaks of other species are also becoming problems in field and glasshouse crops as the effectiveness of insecticides against them decline.
