Download or read book Tomasi Di Lampedusa's Il Gattopardo written by Ernest Hampson and published by Troubador Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's Il Gattopardo achieved an international reputation during the sixties and has since proved to be one of the most enduring works of twentieth century Italian literature. In his novel Lampedusa looks back on the history of Sicily and evokes the atmosphere of a mysterious and insular world where revolution and political upheaval are bringing change to an apparently unchanging society. Ernest Hampson's introductory study stresses the extent to which the author's personal experience of Sicilian history influenced his work. He focusses on the novel's historical theme, that of the Risorgimento and its effects on the island's ruling classes, as well as on the work's key theme, that of death, the death of the protagonist, Don Fabrizio, and of the Sicilian aristocratic class which he embodies. A section is also devoted to the novel's complex use of symbolic imagery. This book is aimed at teachers and students of Italian as well as the general reader.

Book excerpt: ‘So vivid and true . . . Lampedusa is a beautiful novel, lyrical and wise. Reading it made me feel both melancholy and uplifted.’ David Gilmour, Financial Times ‘Brimming with wise and lyrical insights that make it a worthy heir to its mighty predecessor.’ New York Times In the Sicily of the 1950s, still haunted by memories of Fascism and the war, the last Prince of Lampedusa, Giuseppe Tomasi, struggles to complete his only novel, The Leopard. Tomasi is a veteran of the previous war, while his wife Alessandra is living in exile after her native Latvia is absorbed into the Soviet Union. The childless couple are survivors of a vanishing world of European aristocracy, living in the present, yet nostalgic for the decadent past. Diagnosed with advanced emphysema and with a profound awareness of his doomed lineage, the prince begins working on a novel. When The Leopard is posthumously published, it is to much acclaim; it will come to be considered the greatest Italian novel of the century. Achingly haunting, Lampedusa tells the story of a man’s awakening to the possibilities of life as he nears its end. ‘In subtle and intelligent prose, Price invites us into the mind of a man striving to make sense of memory and mortality.’ Sunday Times SHORTLISTED FOR THE GILLER PRIZE
Book Synopsis The Invention of Sicily by : Jamie Mackay
Download or read book The Invention of Sicily written by Jamie Mackay and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you’re vacationing in Italy or simply an armchair traveler, this guide to the Mediterranean island of Sicily is a dazzling introduction to the region’s rich 3,000-year history and culture. A rich and fascinating cultural history of the Mediterranean’s enigmatic heart Sicily is at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, and for over 2000 years has been the gateway between Europe, Africa and the East. It has long been seen as the frontier between Western Civilization and the rest, but never definitively part of either. Despite being conquered by empires—Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Hapsburg Spain—it remains uniquely apart. The island’s story maps a mosaic that mixes the story of myth and wars, maritime empires and reckless crusades, and a people who refuse to be ruled. In this riveting, rich history Jamie Mackay peels away the layers of this most mysterious of islands. This story finds its origins in ancient myth but has been reinventing itself across centuries: in conquest and resistance. Inseparable from these political and social developments are the artefacts of the nation’s cultural patrimony—ancient amphitheaters, Arab gardens, Baroque Cathedrals, as well as great literature such as Giuseppe di Lampedusa’s masterpiece The Leopard, and the novels and plays of Luigi Pirandello. In its modern era, Sicily has been the site of revolution, Cosa Nostra and, in the twenty-first century, the epicenter of the refugee crisis.
Download or read book Nevertheless written by Carlo Ginzburg and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the master of "micro-history" a reconstruction of two contrasting early-modern thinkers Nevertheless comprises essays on Machiavelli and on Pascal. The ambivalent connection between the two parts is embodied by the comma (,) in the subtitle: Machiavelli, Pascal. Is this comma a conjunction or a disjunction? In fact, both. Ginzburg approaches Machiavelli's work from the perspective of casuistry, or case-based ethical reasoning. For as Machiavelli indicated through his repeated use of the adverb nondimanco ("nevertheless"), there is an exception to every rule. Such a perspective may seem to echo the traditional image of Machiavelli as a cynical, "machiavellian" thinker. But a close analysis of Machiavelli the reader, as well as of the ways in which some of Machiavelli's most perceptive readers read his work, throws a different light on Machiavelli the writer. The same hermeneutic strategy inspires the essays on the Provinciales, Pascal's ferocious attack against Jesuitical casuistry. Casuistry vs anti-casuistry; Machiavelli's secular attitude towards religion vs Pascal's deep religiosity. We are confronted, apparently, with two completely different worlds. But Pascal read Machiavelli, and reflected deeply upon his work. A belated, contemporary echo of this reading can unveil the complex relationship between Machiavelli and Pascal - their divergences as well as their unexpected convergences.
