Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third volume of Michael Logusz’s epic study of the Wilderness War of 1777, a sizable British military force, augmented with German and loyalist soldiers, attacks the Northern Army’s southern front in the fall of 1777 in hopes of assisting a much larger British Army that is threatened to the north of New York City in the wilderness region of Saratoga. In previous works on the Wilderness War, Logusz deftly described General John Burgoyne’s efforts in the Saratoga campaign. He covered the exploits of British general Barry St. Leger and the convergence of British, German, Canadian mercenary, loyalist, and Indian forces toward Albany. In this third installment, Logusz presents how British general Sir William Howe was to advance northward from New York City with a force of almost twenty thousand regulars accompanied with a strong river naval force to link up with the two other commanders in Albany. Capturing Albany would not only deny the provincials a vital town on the edge of a wilderness, but also cut off the entire region of New England from the rest of the newly established nation. Instead, Howe decided to pursue Washington in Pennsylvania, leaving behind British general Sir Henry Clinton in New York City to deal with the city's lingering troubles and the events to the north. The book vividly describes the hardships encountered by the patriots fighting for independence and their opponents, along with Clinton’s experiences in and around New York City, West Point, and the Hudson Valley region. Logusz illustrates in depth the terrain, tactics, and terror of the multifaceted Wilderness War of 1777. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. Book excerpt: In 1758, at the height of the French and Indian War, British Brigadier General John Forbes led his army on a methodical advance against Fort Duquesene, French headquarters in the Ohio valley. As his army closed in upon the fort, he sent Major Grant of the 77th Highlanders and 850 men on a reconnaissance in force against the fort. The French, alerted to this move, launched their own counter-raid. 500 French and Canadians, backed by 500 Indian allies, ambushed the highlanders and sent them fleeing back to the main army. With the success of that operation, the French planed their own raid against the English encampment at Fort Ligonier under less than fifty miles away. With only 600 men, against an enemy strength of 4,000, he ordered a daring night attack on the heart of the enemy encampment. This book tells the complete story of these ambitious raids and counter-raids, giving in-depth detail on the forces, terrain, and tactics.

Book excerpt: A true story of a crash in wartime England that killed all 9 crew of an American B-17 Flying Fortress bomber in1944, which this author witnessed & who after 75 years had them honored for their sacrifice by saving many lives that day including this author. The author, David E. Huntley himself having survived the London Blitz, and who watched the crew's remains being retrieved from the wreckage, began receiving many strange and coincidental bits of information about the incident 72 years after it happened. These phenomena also included a diary that had been kept by the navigator of the plane in which he recorded the bombing missions to targets in Germany and in France. It seemed to Huntley that he had been ordained by the souls of the crew to document what happened. He began by tracing the surviving relatives of the navigator and arranged for the return of the diary which became a celebration by itself because they had no idea there was a diary. The diary is published in full in the book and describes the 28 bombing missions they flew. Additionally, Huntley was able to locate the pilot's daughter who was still living and was overwhelmed to know that Huntley was one of the last persons on earth to have seen her father's remains on that fateful day.Huntley also began a quest to have the pilot and crew receive official recognition for flying his crippled plane fully loaded with bombs away from a populated area. He failed to get the American military authorities to accede to his request after 2 years of effort but was able to get the British Authorities to award a Scroll honoring the pilot and crew. Huntley led a party of surviving relatives to England for a ceremony on Remembrance Day where they each received a magnificent Scroll of Honor and recognition of the crew's sacrifice. The ceremony was held at Penn House Estate in Buckinghamshire, the family residence of Lord Howe and Countess Howe, and whose family lineage dates back to Henry VIII.Huntley will continue to locate other relatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, the rituals of death and remembrance have been fixed by time and location, but in the twenty-first century, grieving has become a virtual phenomenon. Today, the dead live on through social media profiles, memorial websites, and saved voicemails that can be accessed at any time. This dramatic cultural shift has made the physical presence of death secondary to the psychological experience of mourning. Virtual Afterlives investigates emerging popular bereavement traditions. Author Candi K. Cann examines new forms of grieving and evaluates how religion and the funeral industry have both contributed to mourning rituals despite their limited ability to remedy grief. As grieving traditions and locations shift, people are discovering new ways to memorialize their loved ones. Bodiless and spontaneous memorials like those at the sites of the shootings in Aurora and Newtown and the Boston Marathon bombing, as well as roadside memorials, car decals, and tattoos are contributing to a new bereavement language that crosses national boundaries and culture-specific perceptions of death. Examining mourning practices in the United States in comparison to the broader background of practices in Asia and Latin America, Virtual Afterlives seeks to resituate death as a part of life and mourning as a unifying process that helps to create identities and narratives for communities. As technology changes the ways in which we experience death, this engaging study explores the culture of bereavement and the ways in which it, too, is being significantly transformed.
