Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canal Tolls and American Shipping It is proposed in this book to submit to an impartial examination the different interpretations of the meaning of the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty. Lest the writer's long association with American shipping interests may seem to militate against a detachment from personal bias in this discussion, he deems it wise to add that he is no longer engaged in shipbuilding, nor has he any interest direct or indirect in any vessel engaged in the foreign or coasting trade of the United States. Finding many arguments advanced upon ideas gathered from hasty consideration which had not taken in both sides of the question, it was decided to try to put within these brief limits a general analysis of the Treaty's provisions, to review both sides of the controversy and to give furthermore all the state papers that show the development of the Treaty. If the reading of this book adds to the general information of the ordinary reader without time for exhaustive study and enables him to criticise with confidence the many addresses and papers on the subject I shall feel that it has served the purpose of its inspiration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Most early fairy tale authors had a lot to say about what they wrote. Charles Perrault explained his sources and recounted friends' reactions. His niece Marie-Jeanne Lhéritier and her friend Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy used dedications and commentaries to situate their tales socially and culturally, while the raffish Henriette Julie de Murat accused them all of taking their plots from the Italian writer Giovan Francesco Straparola and admitted to borrowing from the Italians herself. These reflections shed a bright light on both the tales and on their composition, but in every case, they were removed soon after their first publication. Remaining largely unknown, their absence created empty space that later readers filled with their own views about the conditions of production and reception of the tales. What their authors had to say about "Puss in Boots," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Rapunzel," among many other fairy tales, is collected here for the first time, newly translated and accompanied by rich annotations. Also included are revealing commentaries from the authors' literary contemporaries. As a whole, these forewords, afterwords, and critical words directly address issues that inform the contemporary study of European fairy tales, including traditional folkloristic concerns about fairy tale origins and performance, as well as questions of literary aesthetics and historical context.

Burden has plans, so does Madelene, and so, as it happens, does the ape. This most controversial of Høeg's novels takes us from Society London, across its roof-tops to a forest idyll, to make for a fable at once hilarious and thought-provoking.

The authors explore common central issues: the condition of being "displaced," the risks of impoverishment and destitu-tion, the rights and entitlements of those uprooted, and, most important, the means of reconstruction of their livelihoods. Book excerpt: Presenting cutting-edge research and development within multiscale modeling techniques and frameworks, Multiscale Analysis of Deformation and Failure of Materials systematically describes the background, principles and methods within this exciting new & interdisciplinary field. The author’s approach emphasizes the principles and methods of atomistic simulation and its transition to the nano and sub-micron scale of a continuum, which is technically important for nanotechnology and biotechnology. He also pays close attention to multiscale analysis across the micro/meso/macroscopy of a continuum, which has a broad scope of applications encompassing different disciplines and practices, and is an essential extension of mesomechanics. Of equal interest to engineers, scientists, academics and students, Multiscale Analysis of Deformation and Failure of Materials is a multidisciplinary text relevant to those working in the areas of materials science, solid and computational mechanics, bioengineering and biomaterials, and aerospace, automotive, civil, and environmental engineering. Provides a deep understanding of multiscale analysis and its implementation Shows in detail how multiscale models can be developed from practical problems and how to use the multiscale methods and software to carry out simulations Discusses two interlinked categories of multiscale analysis; analysis spanning from the atomistic to the micro-continuum scales, and analysis across the micro/meso/macro scale of continuum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Three years spent in France, during the 'Second Empire' of Napoleon III, gave Henry James an early mastery of the French language and its literature. When he settled in Europe, as an adult, it was not in Britain but, briefly yet crucially, in Paris. This study identifies the 'missing link' in the history of James's literary engagement with France, between Balzac, revered throughout his career, and later French writers. It was Second Empire writers who spurred James's own contribution to the novel. While realism courted official displeasure, culminating in the prosecution of Flaubert's Madame Bovary, and closure of the radical Revue de Paris which serialized it, the conservative Revue des Deux Mondes (to which James subscribed) enjoyed imperial approval. James remained indebted to the authors published in its pages - Edmond About, Victor Cherbuliez, and Octave Feuillet - to his close friend Paul Bourget, and to the era's greatest playwright, Alexandre Dumas fils." --Book Jacket.
