Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I would have climbed up a mountain to get on the list [to serve overseas]. We were going to do our duty. Despite all the bad things that happened, America was our home. This is where I was born. It was where my mother and father were. There was a feeling of wanting to do your part. --Gladys Carter, member of the 6888th To Serve My Country, to Serve my Race is the story of the historic 6888th, the first United States Women's Army Corps unit composed of African-American women to serve overseas. While African-American men and white women were invited, if belatedly, to serve their country abroad, African-American women were excluded for overseas duty throughout most of WWII. Under political pressure from legislators like Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the NAACP, the black press, and even President Roosevelt, the U.S. War Department was forced to deploy African-American women to the European theater in 1945. African-American women, having succeeded, through their own activism and political ties, in their quest to shape their own lives, answered the call from all over the country, from every socioeconomic stratum. Stationed in France and England at the end of World War II, the 6888th brought together women like Mary Daniel Williams, a cook in the 6888th who signed up for the Army to escape the slums of Cleveland and to improve her ninth-grade education, and Margaret Barnes Jones, a public relations officer of the 6888th, who grew up in a comfortable household with a politically active mother who encouraged her to challenge the system. Despite the social, political, and economic restrictions imposed upon these African-American women in their own country, they were eager to serve, not only out of patriotism but out of a desire to uplift their race and dispell bigoted preconceptions about their abilities. Elaine Bennett, a First Sergeant in the 6888th, joined because "I wanted to prove to myself and maybe to the world that we would give what we had back to the United States as a confirmation that we were full- fledged citizens." Filled with compelling personal testimony based on extensive interviews, To Serve My Country is the first book to document the lives of these courageous pioneers. It reveals how their Army experience affected them for the rest of their lives and how they, in turn, transformed the U.S. military forever.

Book excerpt: Maybe once or twice in our lives, God grants us the high honor of meeting someone special-someone who walks so closely with Christ that -for the moment-we are sure that we are walking and talking with our Savior. That is what happened when many years ago God allowed my path to cross that of Marion Woods. From that first encounter, like so many others, I knew that Marion was someone very special. His love of God, his passion and compassion for God's children were so clearly evident and contagious. From then on, I have treasured each moment God has given us together. I urge our mission team members to "lean in close" to drink in every word Marion has to share with us. Likewise, I spend every free moment sitting as close as I can-drinking in every bit of wisdom, every ounce of inspiration and every drop of laughter. God grants us these rare gems only so often and I thank God for the gift of Marion Woods. Pull up a chair, sip a cup of Costa Rican coffee and be prepared to feel God's presence as Marion takes you on a walk with the Savior. Rev. Jimmy Towson Metter, Ga.- FUMC

Book excerpt: Daily Altar is a call to a daily altar. More couples and families are torn apart because of neglect than are torn apart because of adultery. Neglecting God will lead you to neglecting your spouse (it doesn't matter if you both call yourselves a Christian). There is nothing more important that the two of you need to do today than meet with God. Through spiritual disciplines, God has given the believer a means of growing in godliness. When we make the altar a priority, we will practice it, and when we practice it, we will experience God's power!

Book excerpt: Knowing, loving, and worshiping God is the call and privilege of every disciple of Jesus. Because all Christians are part of his royal priesthood, theology is not just for those teaching in the academy or serving in ministry vocations. Theology proper centers on God, exploring his existence, his divine nature, his Persons, and his attributes. In this book you will find an overview of these truths in the doctrine of God as well as other great truths in the doctrine of divine revelation. You are not simply setting out on a journey toward deeper knowledge. If theological study only results in knowing abstract truths about God, then we have not done theology well. Right theology invariably leads to right living and right worship, and this is our ultimate goal in these books and in this life. God is the first volume of a three-part series entitled Theology for Every Person. The other volumes will include God’s Word to the World, which considers God in Christ and his works of creation, humanity, and redemption, and God’s Work in the World, which explores God the Holy Spirit and the divine works of salvation, the church, and the end.

Book excerpt: "Thank God it’s Monday" is a liberating book about the life God calls all Christians to embark on. The reader is encouraged and inspired through practical examples and humor. Arne G. Skagen gives the word “evangelism” new meaning by presenting fresh insight, and proves that sharing the gospel is for everyone. I’m thrilled that this book is now available in English, after the runaway success of the original Norwegian edition. I have worked with my friend Arne Skagen for many years: reading "Thank God it’s Monday" is just like listening to Arne in person. His unique ability to equip the church to reach everyday people in everyday evangelism is not a theory; it’s Arne’s lifestyle. Roger Aubrey, Leader All Nations Church, Cardiff, UK Arne Skagen is a person whom I look up to: He is from Bergen, he lives what he preaches and every time I talk to him, he inspires me. […]The book "Thank God It’s Monday" does not give me a guilty conscience. It gives me faith, hope and inspiration. Andreas Nordli, Leader of Youth With A Mission, Norway

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red Letter Revolution is about a global movement of Christians who are taking the actions of Jesus and his exact words—the “red letters” in some versions of the Bible—seriously. Colin challenges his readers to join this movement by responding to the poverty, racism, economic disparity, violence, classism, sexism and all other forms of injustice and oppression all around us like Jesus did. Through biblical exposition, rousing stories and practical application, Colin demonstrates that we can follow the radical words of Jesus only with the love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. This book draws our allegiance to the mission of Christ to the poor and oppressed and calls for us to act. It will truly challenge the way we view others and how we should respond to the oppression and injustice present in our world.
