Each question can be fully and satisfactorily answered, and every problem can be correctly solved by reference to the previous conclusions reached, to the explanatory material that precedes certain of the questions and problems, and to the hints that are inserted here and there to aid in the reasoning process. For those who desire more extensive reading, page references to commonly used elementary and advanced text books will be found at the end Of each chapter. Certain specialized works, as well as a selection of those Of a more popular nature, have also been listed. NO attempt has been made to treat purely technical matters or to discuss fine distinctions having only a highly theoretical significance. The aim has been, rather, to help the student see a meaning in commonplace things, to teach and stimulate him to reason, and to guide him towards a series of conclusions embodying those fundamental facts concerning our economic life that every citizen Should know and understand. For this purpose, newspaper clippings seem particularly pertinent and have been used extensively as case material. Although drawn exclusively from papers published in New York City and vicinity, these items are typical of economic news published constantly throughout the country. Book excerpt: Classical Economics Today: Essays in Honor of Alessandro Roncaglia is a collection of essays that pays tribute to Alessandro Roncaglia whose research is based on Schumpeter’s dictum that good economics must encompass history, economic theory and statistics, and therefore does not generally take the form of elegant formal models that are applicable to all and everything. In this direction, Roncaglia is inspired by the Classical economists of the past and becomes a model for present-day Classical economists. A perceptible family air imbues the essays: all the contributors are friends of Roncaglia and see his personality and his interests as a common point of reference.

The object of this report was confined to shewing the false state in which the science had been placed before the public mind, and was to have been followed by another work, the purport of which was to have been the elucidation of the true nature of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Postulates of English Political Economy Mr. Bagehot left behind him some materials for a book which promised to make a landmark in the history of economics, by separating the use of the older, or Ricardian, economic reasonings from their abuse, and freeing them from the discredit into which they had fallen through being often misapplied. Unfortunately, he did not complete more than the examination of two of their postulates - the transferability of labour and capital. But these he treated with so much sagacity and suggestiveness as to give us great help in dealing with the others, and I have long been anxious that what he wrote about them should be published in a cheap form, so as to have a wide circulation among students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Political Economy It is with great pleasure that I embrace the opportunity afforded me by the publishers of Dr. Ingram's "History of Political Economy" to commend the book to the attention of the American public. Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one. We now have a treatise which will compare favourably with any work of similar compass in any other language. The greatest Of ethical teachers was also the greatest of social scientists, and by precept and example taught that man's contract obligations were not to be bartered for mere personal interests, no matter how tempting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National System of Political Economy Frederick List was born, the 6th August, 1789, at Reutlingen, a free city of Suabia. His early education was incomplete. At the Classical School he exhibited so little taste for its studies, that his father withdrew him; but as he showed equal indisposition to learn his father's business, he was subsequently left to shape his own education. This he did, however, to such purpose, that we find him, in 1816, holding an appointment in the Central Administration of Wurtemberg, in which he justified the confidence placed in him by a distinguished statesman, the Minister Wangenheim, who offered his young assistant, in the following year, the chair of Political Economy, in the University of Tubingen. List accepted this position. He tells us in the Preface to his National System, that the principle of free trade was one of the first encountered in his new career. "It seemed to me at first reasonable; but gradually I satisfied myself that the whole doctrine was applicable and sound only when adopted by all nations. Thus I was led to the idea of nationality; I found that the theorists kept always in view mankind and man, never separate nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road to Prosperity: A Treatise on Political Economy At the present time hundreds of thousands of families are suffering greatly through the want of employment, which would not be the case if prosperity existed. Many apparently intelligent persons seem to think that if we write and talk prosperity, it is sure to follow. The writer is persuaded that it requires cause to produce effect, and believing the present depression is occasioned by removable causes, undertakes to point out remedies which would bring about the return of prosperous times and permanently establish them. The various subjects will be considered under their respective headings. This book is not copyrighted, hence it is at the disposal of editors and others to use as they think fit, hoping they will improve upon the suggestions or adopt the opinions expressed, having as their object "permanent prosperity and the contentment of the people."
