Book excerpt: In the more intimate vein of personal Bible study and commentary pioneered by Beth Moore, lay aside the staid and sometimes boring vision of Paul as an early church patriarch and instead explore an in-depth study of the historical, political, and social traditions from which he wrote to understand the ways in which his own journey was being impacted, even as he traveled and ministered to others. Far from being tedious, as he so often seems, Paul was passionate, eloquent, politically discerning, and utterly human. Through extensive exegetical study and personal narrative, Paul's life becomes a compelling example by which to live, and his words to the Philippians become one of God's greatest love letters to His church.

We have those moments in our church life when we are doing well and the church is active, growing, and enjoying a measure of peace. Then for some reason a slump occurs, and we plateau, struggling to stay ahead of the challenges of living in a busy, challenging, and sometimes hostile world. We find this to be not only a church experience but also a personal challenge to our own life as a Christian. We are daily faced with numerous external challenges, but also from issues in personal family life, not necessarily evil issues but often the issues of health, loss of a close family person or friend, financial shifts, and unfortunately interpersonal issues. Paul was well aware of the difficulties Christians face, having encountered many of these in his daily experiences as a Christian missionary in a hostile world. Opposition from his own countrymen and some fellow Christians were a constant threat to Paul's mindset. Paul reflects on each of these challenges in his letter to the church in Philippi, using these experiences as a foundation to his encouraging letter to the saints to build their faith on a trusty foundation to peace of mind and fulfillment in Christ. I like to refer to those downsides of our Christian life as the spiritual "blahs"! They are times in which we are sometimes challenged to just hang it all up! We, churches and Christians alike, will all experience those down times of the spiritual "blahs," and it was at such a time in the life of the Philippian church that Paul wrote this beautiful letter to the saints in Philippi. It was with this in mind that Paul encouraged the saints to adopt the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5ff) which sets out a base for joy in the Christian life. Like Christ, joy in the Christian life comes through thoughtful humble service and help of others. The remedy of the "blahs" in the Christian life comes through adopting the mind of Christ and being humble servants of others. Perhaps Phil 4:4-9, for good reason, has become the favored periscope for many people: 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. 6 Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, what- ever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

Book excerpt: This second edition of An Introduction to the New Testament provides readers with pertinent material and a helpful framework that will guide them in their understanding of the New Testament texts. Many new and diverse cultural, historical, social-scientific, sociorhetorical, narrative, textual, and contextual studies have been examined since the publication of the first edition, which was in print for twenty years. The authors retain the original tripartite arrangement on 1) The world of the New Testament, 2) Interpreting the New Testament, and 3) Jesus and early Christianity. An appropriate book for anyone who seeks to better understand what is involved in the exegesis of New Testaments texts today.

Book excerpt: “This book will prove to be a most effective weapon… against the debunking and skeptical attitudes toward the Gospels that are so prevalent, not only in academe, but also on the street, among young people who, sadly, are leaving the Churches in droves.” – Robert Barron, author of Catholicism For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies? • Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John? • Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? • Why was Jesus crucified? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Book excerpt: In Philippians 2:23-24, Paul points to this epistle being written toward the end of his two-year Roman imprisonment--A.D. 61, possibly at the end of Acts 28:30." To understand Paul's deep love for this church, it's important to know the backstory. The Philippian church began on Paul's second missionary journey (Acts 16:12-40). It was the first church founded by Paul in Europe. The Apostle Paul modeled how it's done. All we need to do is read the epistle to the Philippian believers to envision the pattern God wishes us to emulate in our actions. As my dad would say, "The road to happiness is always under construction." Sample chapters in this study of Philippians include: Our Privilege of Joy Struggles Sanctification Satisfaction Stewardship Sainthood
