Book excerpt: Jacob was afraid. He had just seen the God of all creation. The God of all creation, whose Word is holy and trustworthy, had just spoken to him. God had promised to always bless him and never leave him, but could he really trust God? Could he simply believe in the promise of God, or should he try to do something in response? How was Jacob going to respond? He had heard about his grandfather Abrahams walk down a path in life that was simple and faith-filled. Jacob had watched his brother Esau choose a path that despised the promise of God. Was there a response Jacob could provide that would impress and please God? Possibly if he vowed to tithe, promised God a temple, and promised to make God his Lord, God would be pleased with him. Jacob decided to try this response to God. If his response is typical of our human nature, will we also walk the same pathway that Jacob chose? Is this path of action what God desires of us and does this path truly honor Him? What does the Bible say about the path we are to choose when presented with the promise of blessing that comes through Jesus Christ? The Way of Jacob takes a look at the Word of God to see what response He requires of us. In doing so, we will explore what the Word has to say about human performance in areas such as tithing and other religious works.

Book excerpt: In the 1970s and 1980s, my wife and I were privileged, together with a group of friends, John and Sally, Dennis and Freda, Dave, Richard and Gill, to lead a series of intensive Bible studies with a changing group of undergraduate students each Sunday evening during university term. In preparation for a study, we would meet one evening during the week to discuss the passage of scripture proposed for the following Sunday, and we would share together what we had each learned from commentaries and other sources. On Sundays, one of us would present the passage for perhaps an hour, and after coffee and biscuits, we would have forty minutes or more of open discussion. Those were life-changing evenings for me. I developed a deep respect for scripture, a longing to live it out, and a desire to share it. The studies came to an end smoothly and happily when John and Sally moved to Oxford. This prompted Margaret and me to leave our comfortable downtown church in Cardiff and offer to throw our lot in with a struggling small Baptist church in one of the Welsh valley towns. I offered to take a lead in Bible teaching within the church, and Margaret became involved in time off, a group for older women, and in a number of other community-based initiatives. After a few months, I was invited to accept leadership of the church as a layperson, an untrained Baptist pastor. After much thought and prayer, I accepted, and so commenced the happiest period of my married life and the busiest period for the both of us! Fourteen years later, the church moved to larger premises, led by a gifted local lad with reference to whom I often said, “I lectured the church. Wayne communicates to the people!” For each service in the church, I typed out an A4 essay on the Bible passage that had been preached, and at the end of the service, I stood at the door, said farewell to each person, and gave each of them a copy of my essay. In this way, I hoped that I might increase both the respect for scripture throughout the church and perhaps reinforce the memory of each passage presented in the sermon. When Margaret and I resigned from leadership of the church, I rewrote a series of twenty-eight sermons I had given in the church. I had these printed and bound together into a booklet and I gave a copy as a farewell gift to every person who attended the church. These essays have been further edited and are now published under the title A Medical Scientist Examines the Life of Jesus. The present volume is based on another series of sermons I had given in the church. These, too, have been edited and rewritten as a series of essays under the title Lessons for Life Based on the Lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

It starts examining tithing in the Old Testament. Then explores what the New Testament says about giving. Were the Christians in the 1st century churches, the churches we find in the New Testament, tithing? How did they apply giving? To whom did they give, how much and based on which principle? If they had a "budget," what would the items in this budget look like? Inevitably, it compares their practices with our practices. There is much that can be learn about this topic from the Word of God and the purpose of this book is to bring it to light for the benefit and the enlightenment of the readers. Anastasios Kioulachoglou is a business consultant and lay teacher in the body of Christ. He is a native Greek speaker. In his spare time he works on his Bible teaching, online magazine "The Journal of Biblical Accuracy" (www.jba.gr).

That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.

Book excerpt: Following a thorough examination of every biblical text on tithing, Dr. Kelly concludes that the church would be best served spiritually by believing and applying better New Testament principles of giving. After discussing sound biblical reasons for Christians to replace tithing, he presents God's better principles of grace. Doctrines such as the New Testament concept of law and covenant and the priesthood of believers are presented as they affect tithing. Following several chapters which discuss disputed texts relating to pastoral support, this book traces the early development of church support as found in the Church Fathers before Nicea. This book leaves no question or objection about tithing unanswered. It is a "must read" for any serious Bible student. There is a wealth of other doctrinal insights to be gained as one goes through the Bible in search of the truth about tithing.

The Church says God required the Israelites to give Him a tenth, and He requires the same of you. They can't both be right. After tithing for many years, I decided to find out what the Bible really says. There are only two acts of tithing recorded in the Bible: Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek and Jacob's tithe to God. Jacob's tithe played a vital role in the administration of the Old Covenant, and Abraham's tithe played just as vital a role in the emergence of the New Covenant. God never required the Israelites to tithe, and He doesn't require you to tithe. Read the book. Know the truth. End the tithing charade today.

Book excerpt: For a lot of Christians, tithing is a deeply ingrained tradition, reinforced each week on television and in the pulpits by people they look up to. However, those who take the time to study tithing as practiced in the bible, will find out that Christian or storehouse tithing is both unbiblical and cannot be justified. Why the fixation with tithing? Why all the manipulation and deceit on a topic Christians should not be concerned about?.WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT TITHING?No Percent Tithe is an easy to read book that shows you what the Bible really says about paying tithes. The book, 100% backed by bible verses, clarifies and answers the questions you have about tithing. Questions like: - Who Paid Tithes Under the Law of Moses?- Did Abraham and Jacob tithe?- Can you tithe money?- Can pastors ask for a tithe?- Why do pastors demand the tithe?- Are you cursed if you don't tithe?- How should you give to God?The author uses charts and diagrams to explain and contrast tithing under Moses's Law with Christian storehouse tithing and also looks into how Abram (Abraham) tithed. Christians who read No Percent Tithe will be surprised to find out that: - Abraham, Jacob and early Christians did not tithe;- Jesus, Peter and Paul could not receive tithes;- It is unbiblical to tithe money or your income;- The priests received ONE% not 10% of the harvest;- Pastors are not the modern day Levites;- There was money in those days, but God did not want money as a tithe. Here are the chapter titles: - Tithing under Moses- Why tithing to your church is not biblical- Abraham and Jacob did not tithe- 5 reasons pastors teach untruths about tithing- Why Moses's law does not apply to Christians- God's Portion Was ONE%- NO % Tithe ... Just Give- Why you should say no to tithing After reading NO % Tithe you will understand God's plan for Christian giving and realise that storehouse tithing is unbiblical. The Bible says that we must rightly divide the word of truth to prevent confusion in our thinking (2 Timothy 2:15), and that is why you must read the No % Tithe book. If your goal is to be free to give as led by God and not be 'forced' to give to a church or ministry, purchase a copy of this boo

In this thoroughly researched classic, Randy Alcorn shows us how to view these things accurately—as God’s provision for our good, the good of others, and his glory. How can we be liberated from materialism? What should we do about debt? How much does God want us to give? How can we best help the poor and reach the lost? What about gambling? Investing? Insurance? Saving? Retirement? Inheritance? How can we leave our children a true heritage? How can we use money in ways that God rewards? This practical and refreshing theology of money contains topical and Scripture indexes, a study guide, and five helpful appendices.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.
