Download or read book The Last Night on the Titanic written by Veronica Hinke and published by Permuted Press. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailing—and making history—on the cusp of Prohibition, the Titanic defined drinking and dining styles of the Edwardian era. Societal lines were distinctly drawn as never before. Laden with never-before-experienced luxuries in all three classes, the Titanic set an unprecedented standard and created a time capsule that continues to draw intense interest even 110 years later. Veronica Hinke has curated a culinary narrative that informs and provides new and thrilling insights on what passengers and crew experienced. The Last Night on the Titanic is based on carefully researched and studied historic news articles, menus, and books, as well as dozens of intimate interviews with experts and family members of passengers and crew. Recipes related to moving stories of tragedy and survival are interspersed throughout and easy for readers to make at home, including: · Recipes for English spring pea soufflé, apple meringue, and more mouthwatering Titanic foods · Drink recipes from the hotels that first class passenger John Jacob Astor IV established that still carry on today—including the original martini · True and accurate accounts of the real Margaret “Unsinkable Molly” Brown · Letters from passengers that were received days after the sinking, including one to legendary journalist HV Kaltenborn. · True stories from his family members about what really happened to Chief Baker Charles Joughin “We all think about what our last meal would be. On her maiden voyage, guests on the world’s most famous passenger ship, the RMS Titanic, were dining on the finest foods prepared by the best French chefs and toasting with the best champagne, not knowing that it would be their last meal. Veronica Hinke has taken a story that we all know so well and interwoven delicious recipes that, while historic and old, are classic and worthy of any modern-day table. She has unearthed a vibrant culinary subtext that often left me breathless and dreamy-eyed. She skillfully captures the magical flavor of a fascinating era in our history. Two spatulas raised in adulation.” —Chef Art Smith, former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey “A rich and fascinating addition to Titanic literature. If a book can be compared to a soft, warm sweater, that’s exactly how I’d describe Veronica Hinke’s The Last Night on the Titanic. The reader will find the text on each page purled with anecdotes and personal details about the luxury liner’s passengers and crew and want to snuggle deeper into each story and recipe.” —Rick Archbold and Dana McCauley, co-authors, Last Dinner on the Titanic “Congratulations on a well-researched book!” —Yvonne Hume, Great-niece of Titanic First Violinist John (“Jock”) Hume
Book Synopsis The Titanic in Print and on Screen by : D. Brian Anderson
Download or read book The Titanic in Print and on Screen written by D. Brian Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanic scholars contend that the demise of “the unsinkable ship” left more behind than a memory of April 15, 1912, as an important point in history. Through books, films, stories, and songs, the archetypal shipwreck has endured as a metaphor for the perils of mankind’s hubris and the fallibility of technology. In 1985, the discovery of the long-missing wreckage two miles below the surface of the Atlantic revitalized interest in the Titanic and spawned a new generation of books, films, and, for the first time, websites, and computer games. James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic became the biggest movie of all time and engendered still greater popular interest in the tragic event. This bibliography is a survey of the immense volume of literary, dramatic, and commercial endeavors that came out of history’s most compelling shipwreck. Organized by genre in accessible categories and short entries, the book includes Titanic-inspired documentaries, narrative films, children’s books, histories, short stories, novels, plays, articles, essays, software, websites, poems, and songs. Each entry includes a brief review, bibliographic information, and the technical details of the specific source. The reviews include subjective analysis designed to reflect the usefulness of the source and to be of benefit to researchers and scholars. Five appendices include lists of the actors appearing in more than one Titanic film, brief film and television appearances of the Titanic, films never or not yet released, books that survived the wreck, and books written by passengers.

Download or read book Titanic written by Filson Young and published by Tales End Press. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was one of the first books to appear after the sinking of the Titanic, published just 37 days after the disaster, and despite the haste it is one of the most stylish and well-written of the early works. Its author, Filson Young, was a respected journalist who had already used his columns in the London Saturday Review and the Pall Mall Gazette to call for better safety at sea, and for all ships to have properly-manned radios. Having sailed the Atlantic himself, and knowing several of the passengers on board the doomed liner, his book combines an imaginative telling of the first few days on board, with a vivid account of the sinking based on early survivor interviews. In 1932 the BBC asked Filson to dramatise the book for radio, but a public outcry forced them to reconsider: even after twenty years, his recreation of the sinking was still too powerful for many of their audience.

But on April 14, 1912, the unthinkable happened: the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner the Titanic struck an iceberg in the frigid waters in the dark of night. What happened next seemed unbelievable to people at the time. In approximately two and a half hours, the celebrated ship flooded with water, cracked in half, and sank miles to the ocean floor below. Of the 2,200 passengers and crew onboard, only 705 survived. The rest suffered a terrifying and cold death in the Atlantic. Observers around the world were horrified and saddened by the tragedy, and many wanted answers. What caused this incredible disaster to happen, and why did so many people have to die? In The Sinking of the Titanic, read about the steamship from stem to stern, from the building and construction, the crew and passengers, and the ship's fate with an iceberg, to the effect this tragedy had, and continues to have, on the shipping industry and the world.

Book excerpt: On the 100th anniversary of Titanic's sinking, National Geographic revisits the romance, glory, and tragedy of this tremendous ship and presents an insider’s look at the new findings about the passengers and scientific study of the wreck site. For 100 years the great ship Titanic has rested in its final grave on the ocean floor, lost to deep ocean darkness until its 1985 discovery by National Geographic’s Bob Ballard. Relive the spell-binding tragic final hours of the ship in a detailed retelling of the famous story and learn the personal stories of lesser-known passengers, including the “guarantees.” For the first time since its discovery, Ballard travels to Belfast to interview descendants of the ship builders and the “guarantee group”—the ill-fated men who traveled on the ship’s first voyage to assure its seaworthiness. Understand underwater mapping techniques that have brought Titanic’s debris field into high resolution, and get a glimpse of current deep ocean scientific research on the wreckage and the future of underwater exploration.
