Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a request from Baltimore District, five members of the Committee on Water-Quality met with NAB personnel on 14-15 June 1983 to assist the District in evaluation of water quality problems at the Tioga - Hammond Lakes project. The Tioga - Hammond Lakes project is located in northeastern Pennsylvania. The project consists of two lakes, Tioga Lake on the Tioga River and Hammond Lake on Crooked Creek, which are connected by means of a channel with a control structure. Runoff from the Crooked Creek watershed above Hammond Lake is of good quality and is mildly alkaline in nature. Runoff from the Tioga River watershed above Tioga Lake is adversely impacted at times by acid mine drainage. This acid inflow is believed to have been the cause of minor fish kills in Tioga Lake, following ice formation, during each winter season since the project was completed. The groups initial efforts to evaluate the causes of the fish kills included a review of the existing water quality data base. It was determined that insufficient data were available to firmly establish causes of the problem or make recommendations for specific solutions. The remaining discussion then was devoted to general causes and effects, evaluation of data and study needs, as well as possible remedial measures after additional information was developed.

Book Synopsis Effects of Blood Flows on Water Quality of Tioga-Hammond Lakes; Hydraulic Model Investigation by : Mark S. Dortch
Download or read book Effects of Blood Flows on Water Quality of Tioga-Hammond Lakes; Hydraulic Model Investigation written by Mark S. Dortch and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical model investigation was conducted to estimate the dilution and dispersion of acidic and alkaline substances within Tioga-Hammond Lakes as a result of flood flows and to determine the concentration of these substances in the outflow during drawdown. The model, constructed to a distorted length scale ratio of 1:100 vertically and 1:2000 horizontally, consisted of Tioga and Hammond Lakes, the connecting channel of the dual reservoir system, Hammond outlet works, and the flood control intakes of Tioga outlet works. The model simulated density variations and stratifications expected to exist in the prototype due to temperature differences and reproduced the unsteady inflow and outflow hydrographs for various size floods. Concentrations of fluorescent dyes simulated the acidic and alkaline substances; water samples were collected and analyzed to determine the dilution and dispersion of the dyes throughout the lakes and in the outflow from the lakes. The expected concentrations of acidic and alkaline substances existing in the two lakes after flood inflows and drawdown and in the outflow during drawdown are presented for three flood conditions. The results provide information for estimating water quality for similar flood conditions within and downstream of the project and guidance for limiting adverse quality during drawdown. (Author).

Book excerpt: Diluted bitumen has been transported by pipeline in the United States for more than 40 years, with the amount increasing recently as a result of improved extraction technologies and resulting increases in production and exportation of Canadian diluted bitumen. The increased importation of Canadian diluted bitumen to the United States has strained the existing pipeline capacity and contributed to the expansion of pipeline mileage over the past 5 years. Although rising North American crude oil production has resulted in greater transport of crude oil by rail or tanker, oil pipelines continue to deliver the vast majority of crude oil supplies to U.S. refineries. Spills of Diluted Bitumen from Pipelines examines the current state of knowledge and identifies the relevant properties and characteristics of the transport, fate, and effects of diluted bitumen and commonly transported crude oils when spilled in the environment. This report assesses whether the differences between properties of diluted bitumen and those of other commonly transported crude oils warrant modifications to the regulations governing spill response plans and cleanup. Given the nature of pipeline operations, response planning, and the oil industry, the recommendations outlined in this study are broadly applicable to other modes of transportation as well.

Book Synopsis Reservoir Sedimentation by : G.W. Annandale
Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by G.W. Annandale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance. This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple. A major feature of the book is the application of stream power theory to explain the process of reservoir sedimentation and to develop four new methods for predicting sediment distribution in reservoirs. The book is primarily directed at practising engineers involved in the planning and design of water resources projects and at post-graduate students interested in this field of study.
