He appears in numerous biographies about the 1920s and 1930s and was the model and inspiration for the 1938 dramatic novel by George Headland Those Beautiful, Beautiful People. In his early youth he entertained his friends at his family home of Arches and it was here he lived for many years until his death. He was photographed by many of the greatest artistes of his time and become one of the typical images of 1920s and 1930s "beautiful" young people. He would be seen with painted lips, powder on his face and gold dust sprinkled through his hair. But putting aside all the endless parties and various love affairs, Stephen was actually a very lonely man. Disowned later in life by his two sisters he survived on the friendships of few people including his mother and socialite and fellow writer Agatha Dewsbury. He sought freedom and expression in his writings and published works which are all still in print today. Later in life he became a former shadow of himself, a recluse, obese, redecorating Arches with fishnets, pink satin and golden conch shells. His hair was long and dyed mauve, he wore kaftans and many gilded bangles. He became an embarrassment to the few surviving friends he had left and was cut off from his remaining family, so in retaliation and defiance, he decided to shut himself away from the real world and write his memoirs, which were never published in his lifetime. But there is one small problem. Stephen Wallingford did not exist, nor did any of his contemporaries featured in this book, for the brutal reason that he was never born. The stories are fake and the news never happened. This is something new and strange – a fictionalized retrospective, part interview, part biographical about unreal people set in a real world.

Book excerpt: “Kim” is a novel by English author Rudyard Kipling, originally published as a serial in McClure's Magazine between December 1900 and October 1901. The story revolves around the young Kim and aged priest Lama who together venture off on a mutual quest, although for very different reasons. Though now a controversial novel, “Kim” is considered Kipling's greatest literary accomplishment and offers poignant insights into the religious, social, and political issues of the time. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English novelist, journalist, poet, and short-story writer most famous for his stories set in and related to colonial India. He innovated the art of short story writing and was one of the most popular writers in the U.K. during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Other notable works by this author include: “The Jungle Book” (1894), “The White Man's Burden” (1899), and “The Man Who Would Be King” (1888). Read & Co. Classics is republishing this classic story now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

From the timeless magic of Dickens' Christmas to the provocative depths of Dostoevsky's existential musings, the collection offers a rich tapestry of holiday narratives that span the gamut of human emotion and experience. It is a compendium that not only celebrates the festive spirit but also explores the profound questions of faith, hope, and redemption that often accompany the season. Highlighting classics such as Shakespeare's poetic finesse and the whimsical tales of Beatrix Potter, this anthology provides readers with a unique exploration of holiday literature through the ages, celebrating both the diversity and the universality of the human condition. The contributing authors of the 'HOLIDAY Ultimate Collection' bring together a remarkable blend of cultural and literary backgrounds, each adding their distinctive voice to the choir of holiday celebrations. The editors have masterfully curated works from luminaries such as Tolstoy, Shakespeare, and Yeats, alongside lesser-known yet equally compelling authors like Ewing and Sedgwick. This collective effort bridges various literary movements and historical periods, from the romanticism of Wordsworth to the realism of Twain, offering a panoramic view of the cultural and social dimensions of holiday literature. The anthology not only serves as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling during festive times but also provides insight into the evolving nature of holiday traditions and reflections across different epochs and geographies. 'HOLIDAY Ultimate Collection' is an indispensable volume for readers seeking to immerse themselves in the rich literary traditions of the holiday season. It invites scholars and enthusiasts alike to traverse the snowy paths of nineteenth-century England, the celebratory fires of medieval Europe, and the serene, starlit nights that have inspired poets and writers for centuries. This collection not only promises a delightful reading experience filled with wonder and nostalgia but also offers a profound educational journey through the history of holiday literature. It beckons readers to embrace the spirit of the season with an open heart and a keen mind, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling and the myriad ways it can illuminate the darkest of winters.
