Book excerpt: Analyzing the data from both experiments, the instantaneous heat flux decayed most rapidly due to CCD at the head locations nearest the spark plug (H3 and H4). After 10 hours, the heat flux at H3 and H4 was essentially constant over the cycle, while the peak heat flux at all other locations remained at 30 to 60% of their maximum value, depending on the location. The cumulative heat flux over the cycle after 10 hours decreased to 65 to 80% of the maximum at the head locations and 90 to 100% at the liner; whereas, the head cumulative heat flux fell to 80 to 95% of their starting values and the liner to 75 to 90% after 3 hours. The deposits observed after each experiment were thicker at the head locations than the liner, with the thickest, black deposits residing at H3 and H4 where the peak heat flux declined the most. The thicknesses at H3 and H4 were 281.1 and 204.5 μm after 10 hours, and 137.6 and 138.8 μm after 3 hours, respectively. The deposit for the liner locations was thickest at L4 and L5 on the exhaust side of the engine. The deposit thicknesses at L4 and L5 were 24.0 and 24.1 μm after 10 hours, and 6.9 and 11.5 μm after 3 hours, respectively.
Book Synopsis Diesel Cylinder Gas-Side Heat Flux to a Ceramic Surface by : Gary L. Borman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of four research projects each dealing with instantaneous heat flux to the cylinder head of reciprocating engine are given. The projects are: heat flux to the cylinder head of a reciprocating engine are given. The projects are: heat flux measurements in a diesel engine with variations in injection pressure, nozzle tips and swirl; development of instrumentation for radiation measurements in a diesel cylinder; heat flux measurements to various surfaces on the head of diesel engine including a normaly cooled metal surface, an insulated metal surface and a zirconia surface; and initial attempts to simultaneously measure the fluid motion and heat flux in a motored engine boundary layer. The variation of injection pressure nozzle tips and swirl in a direct injection diesel showed strong coupling between combustion and heat flux. An instrument for radiation measurement which uses a wall jet to reduce convection is described. Compression of the jet by the combustion heat release prevents zeroing of the convection. The major portion of the research was devoted to heat flux measurements to the surface of an instrumentation plug in the head of a single TACOM-LABECO diesel. Comparisons made between data for insulated and uninsulated surfaces show that the hot metal surface gave reduced time averaged heat transfer, but gave a higher peak heat flux than a normally cooled surface. Data for zirconia plate surface gave reduced time averaged heat transfer, but gave a higher peak heat flux than a normally cooled surface. Data for zirconia plate surface showed a reduction in peak flux which was larger than predicted from the rise in surface temperature alone.

Book excerpt: An analysis based on forced-convection heat-transfer theory, similar to the analysis presented for air-cooled engines in NACA Report No. 612, is made of the cooling processes in liquid-cooled engine cylinders. Semi-empirical equations that relate the average head and barrel temperatures with the primary engine and coolant parameters are derived.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer between the working fluid and the combustion chamber in an internal combustion engine is one of the most important parameters for cycle simulation and analysis. The heat transfer influences the in-cylinder pressure and temperature levels, engine efficiency, and exhaust emissions. Most of the current research carried out on combustion chambers focuses on gas temperature measurement by Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) and heat transfer measurement by thermocouples. Heat transfer measurement by thermocouples leads to poor bandwidths and large uncertainties. A more advanced experimental technique for heat transfer measurement used in gas-turbine engine research, platinum thin film resistance thermometers, was recently employed in a single cylinder engine. Heat transfer rate measurements were successfully obtained on the piston surface and cylinder head exposed to the combustion gases. The thin film gauge system has a frequency response of around 100kHz and therefore can track the heat transfer rate changes on the piston surface and cylinder head adequately. Measurements taken with the engine motored and at low load are presented and discussed. (13 figures, 12 refs.).
