Book excerpt: From the Publisher: "Time by Moments Steals Away" records a year in the life of a young woman newly married to one of the most experienced geological explorers in Michigan's early copper mining period and sheds new light on state history. Ruth Edgerton Douglass's diary recounts her winter journey from Detroit to Wisconsin and then her life through autumn and into the following winter on Isle Royale, where her husband had been hired to supervise a mining operation. She shares something of the contrast between the city life she had known and the backwoods existence she came to lead with her husband. Hers is one of the few firsthand accounts we now have of life on Isle Royale at the beginning of its role in the newly developing copper trade. Ruth Douglass's brief journal provides an invaluable look back at Michigan's mining boom and at the people who opened up some of the least settled regions of the state. Robert Root's presentation of that journal clarifies many points for scholars and enriches our understanding of the region's history.

Book excerpt: Huron is pleasurable reading for any student of natural history or the Great Lakes region, or for anyone who has ever spent time at a summer cottage or wished to do so. Napier Shelton takes us on a journey as he spends a year at his family's cottage on the lake. Having visited Lake Huron for over thirty years, Shelton weaves family memories into his evocative and informed account of the seasons on this great lake. In 1995, Shelton spent a year at the cottage more fully exploring Lake Huron and its varied shores. He writes about Native American fishing rights, small towns, the fearsome ice, and the migration of birds. He follows the seasonal changes of life in the water. We accompany him on commercial fishing boats, a research vessel studying lake trout, and a Coast Guard icebreaker. We experience the travels and tragedies of venturers on Lake Huron over the past four centuries. Huron is pleasurable reading for any student of natural history or the Great Lakes region, or for anyone who has ever spent time at a summer cottage or wished to do so.

Download or read book Recovering Ruth written by Robert L. Root and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task of editing and annotating a nineteenth-century diary seemed straightforward at first, but as Robert Root assembled scattered fragments of lost history and immersed himself in background research, he became enmeshed in unexpected ways. When doubts arose about who really wrote the journal, Root found himself plunged into a mystery of lost identity, drawn ever deeper into the drama and complexity of forgotten lives and engaged in a quest at times both compulsive and quixotic. Part memoir, part meditation on the nature of biography, Recovering Ruth is the absorbing story of recovering a hidden past?and of learning firsthand the complications of intimacy that develop between a biographer and his subject.

Book Synopsis Uppermost Canada by : R. Alan Douglas
Download or read book Uppermost Canada written by R. Alan Douglas and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uppermost Canada examines the historical, cultural, and social history of the Canadian portion of the Detroit River community in the first half of the nineteenth century. The phrase "Uppermost Canada," denoting the western frontier of Upper Canada (modern Ontario), was applied to the Canadian shore of the Detroit River during the War of 1812 by a British officer, who attributed it to President James Madison. The Western District was one of the partly-judicial, partly-governmental municipal units combining contradictory arisocratic and democratic traditions into which the province was divided until 1850. With its substantial French-Canadian population and its veneer of British officialdom, in close proximity to a newly American outpost, the Western District was potentially the most unstable. Despite all however, Alan Douglas demonstrates that the Western District endured without apparent change longer than any of the others.
