Book excerpt: Gideon Hawk hunts the depraved outlaw Pima Miller into the Superstition Mountains of Arizona Territory. Hawk inadvertently shot Miller's woman, but the killer doesn't seem to mind. He leaves his infant son behind and heads into the mountains with a beautiful young guide, Jodi Zimmerman, who he's kidnapped from the Superstition Stage Relay Station. Hawk, however, minds very much that his bullet meant for Miller struck an innocent woman. He storms after Miller with his usual blood lust. But the Superstitions are no picnic. The Apaches call the range their Thunder God's abode, and the Chiricahuas don't care for interlopers. And neither does the strange old desert rat known as the Dutchman, who will do everything he can to keep his secret stash of ancient Apache gold a secret.

There were charms against witches and devils, who were entities to be feared. There are legends which describe superstitions about the cosmos and daily life. Others identify and describe the plants and animals used in remedies for diseases and illnesses. Many superstitions that were believed are now considered to be false. Some of the so-called cures can be attributed to psychosomatic illnesses and diseases.

Superstitions represent some of humanity’s earliest attempts to make sense of a dangerous and often incomprehensible world. Even ideas that seem innocuous today, like “getting up on the wrong side of the bed,” have their origins in beliefs and practices of vital importance. In Every Man’s Book of Superstitions, English historian Christine Chaundler explores enduring ideas about luck, magic, astrology, portentous symbols, and more. She also looks at superstitions related to illness, animals, mealtimes, special occasions, specific professions, and so on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining captivating sketches by his brother, artist Ben Clary, and his own prized ghost ship portrayals, Jim Clary presents a compelling and riveting digest of beliefs, customs, and mystery in Superstitions of the Sea. Clary focuses on the vast array of strange, mythical, and often comical beliefs of mariners from ancient times to the present. Collecting the various topics for years. Clary found that maritime superstition was weaved throughout every fabric of his study. So interesting was the folklore that it often lured him far away from his subject search and held him spellbound for hours at a time. Clary offers a unique and encompassing classification of maritime superstitions, including anecdotes on: animals, burial, charms, demons, evil eyes, figureheads, ghost ships, hexes, icebergs, Jonahs, knots, launchings, myths, navigation, omens, people, romance, shipwrecks, triangles, the unexplained, Vikings, and weather phenomena. He combed through countless age-old volumes and interviewed today's sailors to bring to the reader incredible yarns and unbelievable recorded fact enshrouded in mystery.

Book excerpt: The people who live in the Ozark country of Missouri and Arkansas were, until very recently, the most deliberately unprogressive people in the United States. Descended from pioneers who came West from the Southern Appalachians at the beginning of the nineteenth century, they made little contact with the outer world for more than a hundred years. They seem like foreigners to the average urban American, but nearly all of them come of British stock, and many families have lived in America since colonial days. Their material heirlooms are few, but like all isolated illiterates they have clung to the old songs and obsolete sayings and outworn customs of their ancestors. Sophisticated visitors sometimes regard the “hillbilly” as a simple child of nature, whose inmost thoughts and motivations may be read at a glance. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The hillman is secretive and sensitive beyond anything that the average city dweller can imagine, but he isn’t simple. His mind moves in a tremendously involved system of signs and omens and esoteric auguries. He has little interest in the mental procedure that the moderns call science, and his ways of arranging data and evaluating evidence are very different from those currently favored in the world beyond the hilltops. The Ozark hillfolk have often been described as the most superstitious people in America. It is true that some of them have retained certain ancient notions which have been discarded and forgotten in more progressive sections of the United States. It has been said that the Ozarker got his folklore from the Negro, but the fact is that Negroes were never numerous in the hill country, and there are many adults in the Ozarks today who have never even seen a Negro. Another view is that the hillman’s superstitions are largely of Indian origin, and there may be a measure of truth in this; the pioneers did mingle freely with the Indians, and some of our best Ozark families still boast of their Cherokee blood. My own feeling is that most of the hillman’s folk beliefs came with his ancestors from England or Scotland. I believe that a comparison of my material with that recorded by British antiquarians will substantiate this opinion.
