Book excerpt: In this dissertation, an integrated model of an unslotted spread spectrum multiple access (SSMA) packet radio network is developed. The model combines a detailed model of the radio channel, accounting for the effect of multi-user interference, with a network model that traces the evolution of the number of interfering transmissions and accounts for the half-duplex nature of the radios. A new analysis of the performance of a Viterbi decoder in a packet radio environment allows the model to be used for a system with convolutional Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding. The synchronization process is also analyzed and incorporated into the integrated model. The model makes use of several approximations for tractability. A discrete event simulation is used to validate these approximations. The integrated model leads to numerical results which show the throughput and the probability of success for a packet as a function of the channel level and network level parameters. Specifically, for the radio channel, these parameter include the modulation format, the received signal power, the spread spectrum bandwidth expansion, and the presence or absence of FEC coding. Also, the throughput is found as a function of the synchronization parameters, such as the detection thresholds and correlation times, for several different synchronization circuits and preamble structures. At the network level, the parameters are the traffic rate and the network size. The random access protocols considered include unslotted ALOHA and channel load sensing, which is an extension of carrier sensing to an SSMA network. (jhd).

Book excerpt: The authors consider packet radio multi-user spread-spectrum environments, where frequency hopping spread spectrum techniques are deployed for protection against intelligent adversaries. When the users in such environments are mobile and bursty, random access frequency hopping transmission algorithms should be adopted, for efficiency in throughput and delay control. This paper proposes and analyzes such an algorithm, named Collision Resolution Algorithm for Frequency Hopping (CRAFH). The CRAFH is a limited sensing random access algorithm utilizing receiver oriented frequency hopping patterns. In its design, the experience from random access algorithms for non spread spectrum multi-user channels is utilized. Utilizing the regenerative character of the induced by the algorithm transmission process, the authors compute throughputs and expected per packet delays. In the presence of interferences between transmissions to different receivers, we compute throughputs, subject to an upper bound on the probability of erroneous data decoding. The CRAFH induces uniformly good delays within its stability region, and is particularly appropriate for environments where the users are highly mobile.

Book excerpt: We propose and analyze a limited sensing random access algorithm, named CRADS, for a multi-user and multi-receiver direct sequence spread spectrum system. Utilizing the regenerative character of the induced by the algorithm output process, we compute throughputs subject to an upper bound on the probability of erroneous data decoding; we also compute the expected per packet delays. The CRADS induces uniformly good delays within its stability region, an is particularly appropriate for environments where the users are highly mobile. (Author).

Book excerpt: Principles of Mobile Communication provides an authoritative treatment of the fundamentals of mobile communications, one of the fastest growing areas of the modern telecommunications industry. The book stresses the fundamentals of mobile communications engineering that are important for the design of any mobile system. Less emphasis is placed on the description of existing and proposed wireless standards. This focus on fundamental issues should be of benefit not only to students taking formal instruction but also to practising engineers who are likely to already have a detailed familiarity with the standards and are seeking to deepen their knowledge of this important field. The book stresses mathematical modeling and analysis, rather than providing a qualitative overview. It has been specifically developed as a textbook for graduate level instruction and a reference book for practising engineers and those seeking to pursue research in the area. The book contains sufficient background material for the novice, yet enough advanced material for a sequence of graduate level courses. Principles of Mobile Communication treats a variety of contemporary issues, many of which have been treated before only in the journals. Some material in the book has never appeared before in the literature. The book provides an up-to-date treatment of the subject area at a level of detail that is not available in other books. Also, the book is unique in that the whole range of topics covered is not presently available in any other book. Throughout the book, detailed derivations are provided and extensive references to the literature are made. This is of value to the reader wishing to gain detailed knowledge of a particular topic.

Book excerpt: A link throughput-delay analysis is presented for a slotted direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access packet radio network (PRN) operating in the presence of background noise, multiple-access interference, and pulsed jammer noise. The PRN is comprised of an arbitrary number of full-duplex radio units arranged in a paired-off topology. Slotted ALOHA random access is used in conjunction with CDMA for channel access and a type I hybrid ARQ is used for error control. Expression are derived for the link throughput-delay in terms of the channel cutoff rate and capacity. With the friendly objective of maximizing the link throughput, and the enemy objective of minimizing the link throughput, the dependency of the optimal retransmission probability, processing gain, code rate, and jamming fraction on the population size, traffic intensity, bit energy-to-background-noise ratio, is examined in detail. It is shown that properly designed (optimized) PRN using random-access CDMA offers a significantly larger heavy load throughput than a random-access PRN. Theses. (RH).
