Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eyes of the Beholder is a rare gem because author Naomi Gordon's stories took place in the early twentieth century. Naomi's selection of words uniquely displays poetic charm to true life events. The stories come alive as if you're watching a movie. Naomi's father came to her in a dream and told her that her inheritance is in the "book." Little did she know that he was talking about her story writing. Naomi read her stories to her children as they grew up, not knowing that her stories were going to be published in a book. Her stories are filled with excitement, mystery, and suspense, which can later be transformed to movie theaters, Broadway plays, Netflix originals, Hulu originals, and other movie platforms. While reading her stories to six of her children, they became her audience and then decided to start putting her stories on paper.Naomi was above and beyond in her writing abilities. Naomi was able to capture every life experience in detail that she has seen through her hazel eyes. Words came to her in a form of rhymes for each story that she wrote. As she placed a calligraphy pen with black ink to a parchment paper, words were coming to her mind faster than she could write. This caused her to continue to write many events that took place in her life. This is a treat in itself to read. The Eyes of the Beholder will entertain you from the beginning to the end with great true life stories that seem unbelievable.Naomi has the ability of memorizing paragraphs and has mastered in the English vocabulary, which attributed to her writing skills. Naomi has a photographic memory as she remembered each and every story through each step of her life. Naomi also remembered every nursery rhyme, which she recited to her grandchildren. There have been many disappointments in her life, but through her faith in God, she was able to shake them off. Naomi hopes that readers will capture a part of their life that no one else has seen. What stories have you captured that are memorable? Maybe you will be able to understand where you are in your life now from your past.

Book excerpt: A hard-edged businessman and a beautiful art expert make a tantalizing mind-body connection at a new age resort until a killer threatens their piece of paradise in this “fun-filled and sensational tale by the incomparable Jayne Ann Krentz” (RT Book Reviews). Alexa Chambers has a flair for style, an eye for art, and a reputation in tatters after blowing the whistle on an employer who was selling fakes to wealthy clients. Now she runs a shop in her Arizona hometown, but she’s determined to rebuild her career even if it means taking risks. She begins secretly consults on an exquisite art collection being installed at the new Avalon Resorts. Her scheme might just work—if she can steer clear of the resort’s owner, the enigmatic and possibly dangerous J. L. Trask. Alexa was a scared teenager the last time she saw Trask, the man who accused her stepfather of murder. Insisting his dad’s fatal car crash had been no accident, Trask vowed one day he’d come back to Avalon for revenge. Now, twelve years later, their meeting is inevitable. Their attraction is immediate. And their chances of bliss are infinitesimal. Trask wants to piece together the past with Alexa’s help and get closer to this dazzling deco diva. Alexa wants to protect her family and figure out Trask’s real motivations. But when a killer emerges from the shadows, they have no choice but to team up to solve a deadly crime from long ago. As they trade sizzling sparks and snappy repartee, their trail leads to a trendy spa called the Dimensions Institute, whose flaky denizens and strange atmosphere suggest there is more hidden there than meets the eye. They don’t need a crystal ball to see that their survival—and relationship—depends on more than tantric breathing or a heavenly passion. They need a little help from a higher power: a true and trustworthy love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Eye and the Beholder the author singles out a topic already touched upon in her previous book, Colour in Sculpture. By raising the question of how significant the colouring of the eye is to figurative representations of the late medieval and early modern period, Hannelore Hägele examines the different solutions open to the sculptor, which vary depending on historical and cultural parameters. The created eye must suit purpose and style. She discusses a number of unusual aspects of this: sculpted eyes in antiquity; the art and craft of polychromy; partial polychromy; emotions and expressions; the gaze and the glance; from the sculpted eye to colour and the glass eye; and what the eye cannot see. Dr Hägele asks whether advances in optics and other sciences, or theological concepts such as the eye of God and the inner eye, determined the way in which eyes were perceived and represented. It is the beholder, whether as maker or viewer, who engages with and judges the worth of any creative effort and what it contributes to an understanding of the seen and the unseen. The illustrations and the many coloured plates accompanying the text offer an overview of the subject.

Book excerpt: Beauty, as the popular proverb says, is in the eye of the beholder. But, what about ugliness? The bearded man with the dark, worried eyes asks himself that same question every time he falls to his knees in prayer. He prays with the fervor of a man who does not yet know his time is up; that weighty pressure on his chest insisting he do something... The flaxen-haired woman sits in her office surrounded by colleagues who appear, for all intents and purposes, to hang on her every word. She glances outside at the striking alignment of blue skies, clouds, and glaring steel and glass skyscrapers. She feels nearly impervious to the elements, high up in her office...As he sits inside an armored military vehicle winding its way through narrow village roads, the blue-eyed boy glances out at the villagers standing in their doorways, many of them clutching young children close to their sides. He feels excitement and terror all at once...Three people, three seemingly disparate circumstances. The intersection of their lives will leave each one grappling with life's most challenging questions, and none will leave unchanged.

Book excerpt: In Eye of the Beholder, the author takes us on a journey from the rural life of horse-drawn carriages to a technological age of jet planes and rockets to the moon. Ephraim J. Stockwell wrote his first poem in his teens when he left home. He left home, but his heart remained there with his family, friends, and neighbors. He has written poetry over the years that is simple, touching, and unique. Love of life, love of home, and love of country has influenced much of it. The author is a World War II veteran. After college, having majored in Physics, opportunities in his career led to an important role in putting a man on the moon at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Book excerpt: In the eyes of the ancient Greeks and Romans, physical imperfections and infirmities were comparable to marks of the barbarian. The distinguished historian Robert Garland offers the first detailed investigation of the plight of those Greeks and Romans who, owing either to deformity or to disability, did not meet their society's exacting criteria for the ideal human form. Drawing on classical drama and poetry, historical works, medical tracts, vase painting and sculpture, mythology, and ethnography, Garland examines the high incidence of disability and deformity among the Greek and Roman population. From the deaf, the blind, and the lame to hunchbacks, dwarfs, and giants, to those even more severely disabled, he explores the lives of the handicapped and their place in ancient society. Garland discusses medical treatments, jobs available to the disabled, religious and scientific explanations for congenital deformities, and the prevalence of belief in monstrous races. And he analyzes how, through public rituals, social institutions, literature, and art, ancient society as a whole utilized deformity for its own purposes. The handicapped served as living testimony to the power of divine retribution, and were also regarded as scapegoats, portents, embodiments of evil, objects of amusement, and proof of nature's ingenuity. Referring frequently to the condition of the disabled in contemporary society, The Eye of the Beholder contributes an important chapter in the history of the treatment of the disabled and offers a revealing introduction to a relatively neglected aspect of ancient life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Eyes of the Beholder is an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between viewing a work of art and the emotions and memories it evokes. Fifteen artworks were selected. Each piece was assigned to two different people with no other information than to use as a writing prompt. In some instances, an immediate emotional response was aroused and the writing flowed. In other cases, the work evoked a personal memory and led the writer to reflect on current sociological themes or current events. The resulting works span a wide range of topics, genres, and writing styles; but each piece is unique and made the author stretch and expand their writing skills. We all have a story to tell about the piece, and that story may have nothing to do with the artist’s intent in creating the artwork. That is the seminal point of this book.
