Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than looking at Jesus -- the popular conception of the "historical Jesus" -- John Baggett contends that we should instead look with Jesus at the realities of God and neighbor as he perceived them. Baggett incorporates the witness of the key human relationships of Jesus, looking at why those earliest believers and friends considered him divine. Baggett then asks how Christ's transcendence can ultimately translate to significance for life and faith in today's story.

Download or read book Through the Eyes of Rose written by John Kozak and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Eyes of Rose details the story of Rose Kozak and how she successfully defied the Czechoslovakian Communists in October 1949 and escaped with her children through the wilderness of the Bohemian Forest to the freedom of West Germany. John Kozak was just seven when he escaped with his mother and older sister from oppressive Communist rule. His emotional retelling of his mother's struggle to feed her family during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, her near drowning in the Danube River, and her reaction to the news that the Czech Communists had fabricated criminal charges against her husband all make for an intriguing look into the lives of a family deeply affected by the Communist takeover of their native country. When Rose's husband Anthony is unable to return from Switzerland to Prague where he faces imprisonment due to fabricated charges by the new Communist regime, Rose decides to escape. During her journey to seek a better life, she is betrayed by a money-hungry guide, hunted by tracking dogs, and nearly captured by a Soviet patrol. One woman's courage and dogged determination to seek freedom for her family proves that a mother's love will always persevere over evil.
Book Synopsis Reading the Gospel of John through Palestinian Eyes by : Yohanna Katanacho

This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians from diverse cultural, religious, and political contexts have been studying the Gospel of John for almost two thousand years. In this insightful reflection on the Fourth Gospel, Rev Yohanna Katanacho invites us to encounter the text anew, this time from the perspective of a twenty-first century Palestinian Christian. Challenging the claim that Christ belongs to a particular denomination, nation, or race, Katanacho presents the Gospel of John as introducing a new world order. In John’s account of Jesus’s life, the rich history of Judaism is reinterpreted in light of the inclusive Christ, the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies, teachings, and promises. Walking us through the reinterpretation of holy space, holy time, holy history, holy community, holy land, and life itself, Katanacho demonstrates how John’s gospel establishes a new identity for the people of God – an identity defined not by race or nationality but by suffering and love. Containing questions for reflection designed with preachers in mind, this accessible book will be a great help for Christians seeking to mine the beautiful riches of spiritual truth in this often-complicated gospel.

Book Synopsis Mary's Voice in the Gospel According to John by : Michael Pakaluk
Download or read book Mary's Voice in the Gospel According to John written by Michael Pakaluk and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Light on John’s Gospel The Gospel according to John has always been recognized as different from the “synoptic” accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. But what explains the difference? In this new translation and verse-byverse commentary, Michael Pakaluk suggests an answer and unlocks a twothousand-year-old mystery. Mary’s Voice in the Gospel according to John reveals the subtle but powerful influence of the Mother of Jesus on the fourth Gospel. In his dying words, Jesus committed his Mother to the care of John, the beloved disciple, who “from that hour . . . took her into his own home.” Pakaluk draws out the implications of that detail, which have been overlooked for centuries. In Mary’s remaining years on earth, what would she and John have talked about? Surely no subject was as close to their hearts as the words and deeds of Jesus. Mary’s unique perspective and intimate knowledge of her Son must have shaped the account of Jesus’ life that John would eventually compose. With the same scholarship, imagination, and fidelity that he applied to Mark’s Gospel in The Memoirs of St. Peter, Pakaluk brings out the voice of Mary in John’s, from the famous prologue about the Incarnation of the Word to the Evangelist’s closing avowal of the reliability of his account. This remarkably fresh translation and commentary will deepen your understanding of the most sublime book of the New Testament.

Traditional church evangelism methods are no longer as effective. 1X Evangelism introduces a new approach: church-wide personal evangelism strategy. Unlike a program, 1X is a highly flexible strategy designed for small churches, yet adaptable to churches of any size. Book Synopsis Wounded Lord: Reading John Through the Eyes of Thomas by : Robert H. Smith
Download or read book Wounded Lord: Reading John Through the Eyes of Thomas written by Robert H. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John's gospel does not record "Thomas's doubt," as later generations of Christians have branded the story. Rather, John presents Thomas's faith. In this work, Robert H. Smith approaches Thomas as one who believes in the reality of incarnation: God has a body. Too often, Smith argues, Christians read John's gospel for its lyrical discourses. The resulting portrait of Jesus is a "cross-less Christ," a portrait that contributes powerfully to Christian triumphalism. In contrast, Smith finds that the evangelist always has the cross in view. Smith reads John "backwards," through the eyes of Thomas. In so doing, he demonstrates the centrality of a wounded Lord in the theology of the gospel. But this book does not end with hermeneutics. Smith advances his discussion into the life of discipleship. Anyone dwelling in Christ's body will be similarly marked. What does it mean to live in the world as the marked body of Christ? Everyone who poses the question will want to read this book. Martha E. Stortz Professor of Historical Theology and Ethics Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary/The Graduate Theological Union Berkeley, California
Book Synopsis John Through Old Testament Eyes by : Karen H. Jobes
Download or read book John Through Old Testament Eyes written by Karen H. Jobes and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Testament commentary steeped in the Old Testament Through Old Testament Eyes is a new kind of commentary series that illuminates the Old Testament backgrounds, allusions, patterns, and references saturating the New Testament. These links were second nature to the New Testament authors and their audiences, but today's readers often cannot see them. Bible teachers, preachers, and students committed to understanding Scripture will gain insight through these rich Old Testament connections, which clarify puzzling passages and explain others in fresh ways. In John Through Old Testament Eyes, Karen Jobes reveals how the Old Testament background of the Gospel of John extends far beyond quotes of Old Testament scripture or mention of Old Testament characters. Jobes discusses the history, rituals, images, metaphors, and symbols from the Old Testament that give meaning to John's teaching about Jesus--his nature and identity, his message and mission--and about those who believe in him. Avoiding overly technical discussions and interpretive debates to concentrate on Old Testament influences, volumes in the Though Old Testament Eyes series combine rigorous, focused New Testament scholarship with deep respect for the entire biblical text.

Book Synopsis Through the Eyes of the Disciple Jesus Loved by : John H Brennan
Download or read book Through the Eyes of the Disciple Jesus Loved written by John H Brennan and published by Thru The First Disciple's Eyes. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the covers of this book, I attempt to take you on a journey through the eyes of the disciple that Jesus loved. Not wanting to quote scripture, but to fill in the blanks of scripture. To help you see what John saw. To hear what John heard. To feel what John felt. You will begin this journey on Golgotha as John had to not only deal with his own grief, but also console the Blessed Mother Mary. Then to the tomb, and on to the upper room to wait and cry and wonder, when will they come for us? Three days pass and the Lord rises from the dead! Even with the new strength from the knowledge of the Resurrection, we hide in the locked room, then He appears to us! The second time he appears, Thomas is there, having not believed that we saw and talked with the Risen Christ. Jesus invites Thomas to put his fingers in the nail holes in His hands and feet and his hand into his side. Then Jesus asks for something to eat! A month passes and Jesus leads you and the others out to the vicinity of Bethany, which is situated on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, a half a day's hike! There, He says that He will send an advocate who will always be with us and remind us all He said and did. Then blessed us all and floated into the sky. Then two men in white robes appeared and said "Why do you stand here looking into the sky?" We all feel foolish as this implies a gentle reminder to us that our task and focus should not be solely on the sight of Jesus ascending, but on the mission He had entrusted to us. The journey continues with the daunting task of preaching the Good News to all and more personally, the task of keeping Mother Mary safe from all harm, even if it takes bringing her to a safe city far away. Enjoy the images and dialog John may have had with the other Apostles, Mary and those he ministered to.
