Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Lands That Were Dark, Being a Record of a Year's Missionary Journey, in Africa and Madagascar Nor does the discussion of questions of missionary policy or any account of the details of the work in the various fields fall within the scope of this book. These matters have been dealt with in Reports prepared for the Directors of the Society. Further information with regard to all the fields can be obtained in the Society's Annual Report. Some account of Madagascar and the missionary work there will be also found in a book just published, entitled Madagascar for Christ, being the Joint Report of the Simultaneous Deputations from the London Missionary Society, The Friends' Foreign Mission Association, and the Paris Missionary Society, which have recently returned from Madagascar.* The journey has been one of great fascination. From the point of view of the traveller it has been full of interest. From the point of View of a Secretary of a Missionary Society carrying on work in the lands visited, the out standing impression has been that of the growing Christian Church. In Central Africa that Church is in its infancy, but it is an infancy full of promise. In South Africa and Madagascar the Native Church is nearly a century old. Its foundations have been well and truly laid, and it exhibits all the signs of healthy life and growth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Lands That Were Dark, Being a Record of a Year's Missionary Journey, in Africa and Madagascar I hear a clear voice calling, calling, Calling out of the night, O, you who live in the Light of Life, Bring us the Light! We are bound in the chains of darkness, Our eyes received no sight, O, you who have never been bound or blind, Bring us the Light! We live amid turmoil and horror, Where might is the only right, O, you to whom life is liberty, Bring us the Light! We stand in the ashes of ruins, We are ready to fight the fight, O, you whose feet are firm on the Rock, Bring us the Light! You cannot - you shall not forget us, Out here in the darkest night, We are drowning men, we are dying men, Bring, O, bring us the Light! John Oxenham. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Travels in Central Africa When Mr. Arnot asked me to write an Introduction to the book he was preparing, I little thought that before I did this his toilsome journeyings would be ended, and his loving labours left to be carried on by others. But while we deeply feel the loss of this devoted servant of Christ, it is good to be able to record the fact that his course, so well and nobly run, has given place to rest with Christ, and his good fight, so valiantly fought, has ended in victory. Truly he rests from his labours, waiting for the day of resurrection glory, and his works, which follow him (rev. Xiv. Are kept as carefully as the worker, and will be found to his account, and fully rewarded in the day of Christ. The fact that our brother and friend is no longer with us makes some brief notice of his early days desirable, even as it is interesting and instructive. As in natural things one generation not only follows another but Springs from it, so it is in Spiritual things. A little of this we see now, but only when we review the pathway of the Church of God, and of those who have been His servants in the Church and in the Gospel, with the full light of God shed on it, shall we fully discern the links between one generation and another, and learn how the influence Of servants of Christ in one period has borne fruit in the next, that influence Often being unconsciously exercised. It was little thought when tidings of Dr. Livingstone's death reached us that there was a youth in Scotland being prepared by his example to follow in his steps, with the same high Object and in the same lowly Spirit. Yet so it was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South and South Central Africa: A Record of Fifteen Years' Missionary Labors Among Primitive Peoples With utmost confidence and pleasure, I give an introductory expression for this intelligible, authentic, and most valuable little volume, the product of great sacrifice and long experience, by one who was favored and honored with lucrative educational positions, being a classic. I have been acquainted with the authoress for many years, and am a member of the Foreign Missionary Board under whose auspices she has most effectually labored during an unbroken period of one and one-half decades; therefore I speak with great assurance of the merits and hope of her book, destined to be prolific and incentive to active missionary operations in foreign lands. The photo-engravings have special interest, having been taken from real life and nature as she found them in dark Africa - places, people, environments, customs, habits, and religion, which she saw with her own eyes and mind. Having thoroughly mastered various dialects of tribes among whom she has labored so many years, having gathered many historical facts relative to uncivilized races, and also having special tact, instinct and God-given ability through the gift of the Spirit, making her very efficient in her call to these dusky tribes, she is qualified in a very proficient sense to compile the story of this strange people. On meeting Sister H. Frances Davidson, one is quickly impressed with her modest and unassuming disposition, the rare gift that characterizes all the truly noble and great. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Lands Afar: A Second Series of Mission Stories of Many Lands, a Book for Young People; Profusely Illustrated This region which we have thus briefly described is most interesting to us because it is so intimately connected with the missionary labors of Moffat and Livingstone and other brave and sainted men who have given their lives for the benefit of their fellow-men. Robert Moffat labored long and successfully among the Bechuanas. Livingstone went from Kuruman, which you will find on the sketch map, northward to Lake Ngami, and then on until he reached the Zambesi, discovering the Victoria Falls, probably the most marvelous of all the cataracts on the face of the earth. Later, Livingstone went still farther north ward, revealing to the world something of the horrors of the slave traffic and calling upon Christendom to send the gospel to the tribes of the interior. Upon the northern boundaries of what is now called Zambesia, Livingstone died, while upon his knees praying for Africa. Sooner than he thought has the civilized world reached out to the region which he explored, and commerce and Christian missionaries have attempted to do what he sought to have them do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the Dark Continent: A Study in Missionary Progress, Opportunity and Urgency This little volume has been written for a special purpose - namely, as a text-book for Missionary Study Circles. It is not intended for advanced students or returned missionaries, but for those who are begin ning the study of Missions to Pagan Africa. With no pretence to originality, the writer has sought to supply just such facts about the country, the people, and missionary work, as may serve as an introduction to the subject. The book claims to be nothing more than a primer. It is not in any sense a history of Wesleyan Missions; for it has not been the writer's purpose in any way to forestall the great work on which Dr. G. G. Findlay is engaged The book gives a series of pictures, rather than a history, of Missions to the pagan races of Africa. The Muslim countries of North Africa do not lie within the scope of this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Mark 16:15-16 'And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned'Greetings, welcome to my life, my story, my journey as an African Missionary. In this pictorial, you will travel with me throughout the continent of Africa, and you will experience live, and in vivid color the pains, pleasures, and pursuits of God's Woman, the Isha-Elohim. In the year 2000, God spoke to me in my home office that I would travel to Ghana. At the time, I really did not know much about this country at all. Nevertheless, how many of you know that God has a sense of humor? He is always up to something. In the years that followed, I became intimately acquainted with the Ghanian culture, through many Africans that were working for me in Atlanta, Georgia at the time. From there, my God-ordained destiny begin to unfold, right before my eyes and it became very clear to me that God was moving me from the corporate board rooms of America's Fortune 500 companies, to a greater purpose on the mission fields on the continent of Africa. I began to mingle, and mix with the Ghanian and Nigerian communities in Atlanta, GA. I quickly learned a great deal about their cultures, customs, and more.Shortly, thereafter, I made my first missionary trip to Ghana (West Africa) around March 2008. It was definitely unplanned, and a direct orchestration of the Holy Spirit of God. I was so intrigued, and I felt at home (destiny), to the point that I came back to America, literally packed my bags and returned nine months later in December 2008, to live for a while on the continent. For an entire year, I preached, taught in the villages, and spearheaded leadership trainings for pastors, church leaders, and laity throughout churches in West Africa (Accra, Ghana, Lome Togo)...locales in Nigeria were: Lagos, Abuja, Lokoja, Apa, Markurdi, and Benin City. I also had the opportunity to minister in Brakpan, South Africa and a Pretoria visit. This is my journey in pictures, but it is only the beginning. God has a lot more in store for this daughter of Zion. You will see my visits to East Africa... Kenya (Kitale and Nairobi), and Bukwo, Uganda. This is a prelude to my upcoming book: Journeys of an African Missionary that will depict in detail, stories like: when police officers in Lome, Togo wanted to rob me because I was an American and how my host negotiated on my behalf. It also has some humour of when I rode on the back of a motor bike to a preaching engagement with a host pastor in Parliament, Togo because he did not have a car, when we were stuck 9 inches in mud en route to a preaching engagement in Kitale, Kenya (LOL).And when we finally got out, a herd of cows still held us up as we attempted to cross over into Bukwo, Uganda for meetings. This is God's destiny for my life, this is my journey, I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I have enjoyed when they were being captured.Godspeed, and more Kingdom Grace to you all.In His Presence and Power,I remain, Prophetess Gladys Dark,Divinely Elevated".
