SO runs the Turkish proverb, and it was partly the peculiar fascination which Asiatic Turkey exercises over all who know it well. That drew me in the summer of 1899 to embark upon my third expedition into the interior. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt, Cyprus and Asiatic Turkey Our recent acquisition of Cyprus has also given occasion for a few passing observations. I have visited the island, and resided during two years on the neighbouring coast of Syria; and was, at the time, led to believe that Cyprus was one of the healthiest islands in the Mediter ranean. If it has not proved to be so for our troops, the imprudence of the authorities in charge is to be largely blamed. Book excerpt: This travel diary covers territory in Syria and the rural Asian provinces of the Ottoman Empire, areas the author deems to be sadly unvisited by American tourists. The author made a special effort to avoid officials, rather spending time with average people, and he was sympathetic to them. He asserts that Christians are not especially oppressed by the government; rather both Muslims and Christians are misruled. The book was researched and written in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish War and so the author includes discussion of the relative virtue of Russian rule as well as the impact of the war on the common people. Much of the account is taken up with describing the landscape and physical features of the territory rather than just cultural description and political commentary. The author includes a historical summary of the region and an analysis of the Muslim poor in separate sections at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Turkey: During Twelve Years Wanderings Love for Asiatic Turkey and its people, com bined with hope for its future and interest in its past history, may justify the publication of these pages, in which I have tried to record frankly the impressions left on my mind during the wanderings of twelve years, and the studies of seventeen years. I cannot hope that they will be generally acceptable to those whose minds are made up on one side or the other, for they steer a middle course and r no person and no people as wholly in the right. The method followed is for the most part to take the reader into the heart of Turkey and let him look for himself, explaining my own impression about the facts which he sees. I began to travel with a strong belief in the imperial mission of Britain, and I end with a stronger faith in the English-speaking race. But I have learned also to appreciate the high qualities of other great nations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year With the Turks: Or Sketches of Travel in the European and Asiatic Dominions of the SultanTee following pages are intended to give a plain unvarnished account of a journey through Turkey, and of the character of her population. In the present crisis, the popular mind has espoused the side of the Osmanli; but rather, it would seem, from antagonism to Russia, than from a true sympathy for the Turks; and my principal Object is to set forth, without extenuation, without reference to partisan writers, all those points presented to the' notice of a disinterested inquirer, which may enable us to judge, whether or not the Turkish nation is, in itself, deserving of support.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
