Book excerpt: There is a large class of readers who seek books for the sake of the amusement they afford. Many are not very fastidious as to the character of those they select, and consequently the press of the present day teems with works which are not only valueless, so far as imparting information is concerned, but actually deleterious in their moral tendency, and calculated to vitiate and enervate the mind. Such publications as pander to a prurient taste find a large circulation with a portion of society who read them for the same reason that the inebriate seeks his bowl, or the gambler the instruments of his vocation--for the excitement they produce. The influence of works of this description is all bad--there is not a single redeeming feature to commend them to the favor or toleration of the virtuous or intelligent. It cannot be expected that minds accustomed to such reading can at once be elevated into the higher walks of literature or the more rugged paths of science. An intermediate step, by which they may be lifted into a higher mental position, is required. There is in the adventures of the daring and heroic, something that interests all. There is a charm about them which, while it partakes of the nature of Romance, does not exercise the same influence upon the mind or heart. When there are noble purposes and noble ends connected with them, they excite in the mind of the reader, noble impulses. The object of the present compilation is to form a readable and instructive volume--a volume of startling incident and exciting adventure, which shall interest all minds, and by its attractions beget thirst for reading with those who devote their leisure hours to things hurtful to themselves and to community. We have endeavored to be authentic, and to present matter, which, if it sometimes fail to impart knowledge or instruction, or convey a moral lesson, will, at least, be innoxious. But we trust we have succeeded in doing more than this--in placing before the reading public something that is really valuable, and that will produce valuable results.

Book excerpt: A General History of the Pirates contains biographies of early 18th century pirates, which was influential in shaping popular conceptions of pirates. It is the prime source for the biographies of many well-known pirates and the author sticks close to the available sources. The History of the Pirates is a sequel to A General History of the Pyrates and it is considered one of Defoe's most remarkable neglected works. In this volume Defoe records the exploits of pirates who lived a few decades earlier. The book has been hugely influential in shaping popular notions of piracy. The King of Pirates is supposed to be an account of the pirate Henry Avery, known by contemporaries as "The Arch Pirate" and "The King of Pirates", and widely believed stories of Avery's pirate republic. Avery's account is presented in two long letters written by himself, one in Madagascar, and the other during the escape. The Pirate Gow is an account of John Gow, a notorious pirate whose short career was immortalized by Defoe. Gow had a successful career as a pirate around the Iberian Peninsula, but he was captured and hanged in London. Gow also served as the model for Captain Cleveland in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Pirate. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), was an English writer, journalist, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, and he is considered one of the founders of the English novel.

Book excerpt: An ancient Hopi proverb states “He who tells stories, rules the world.” Well here is your chance to become a King, or a Queen for a day, or at least, a few hours…… Herein, are 18 true and fictional stories, adventures and accounts of pirates and pirate actions. Stories like The Piccaroon, The Capture of Panama, The Daughter of the Great Mogul, The King of the Pirates, Barbarossa—King of the Corsairs, (Captain) Morgan at Puerto Bello, The Ways of the buccaneers and many, many more. While the majority of these stories occur in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean, a few stories from the Eastern Indian Ocean are included as well. At its highest expression, piracy embodies the romance of the high seas, and, in the main, we have Hollywood’s swashbucklers to thank for this. It is also a sad but inevitable commentary on the attitudes of mankind during the middle-to-late middle ages, that, if men were savages on land, they were doubly so at sea. There may be a certain human perversity in this, for the pirate was, at best, unquestionably a bad person. Piracy was gradually overcome with the settlement and ordering of the far-flung colonies and with the advent of steam power. Even so, romanticised accounts of fictional pirates are included in this volume. Equally so are the true accounts of piratical actions, mainly provided by the Royal Navy. Ours was a bold hardy world, up to the advent of steam,—every foot of which was won by fierce conquest of one sort or another. Out of this past the pirate emerges as a romantic, even at times, an heroic, figure. This final niche, despite his crimes, cannot altogether be denied to him. A hero he is and will remain so long as tales of the sea are told. So, have at him - in these pages! ============= KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, fairytales, legends, myths, children’s stories, fables, bedtime stories, allegories, Piccaroon, Tom Cringle, Log, Capture of Panama, Buccaneers of America, Afloat, Ashore, Wonderful, Fight, Exchange, Bristol, Pirates, Algiers, Purchas, Pilgrims, Daughter, Great Mogul, King of the Pirates, Barbarossa, King of the Corsairs, Sea Wolves, Mediterranean, Captain Morgan, Puerto Bello, Ways of the Buccaneers, Customs, Spanish Main, True, Three Notorious Pirates, Capture, Ship Derby, Francis Lolonois, Slave, Pirate King, Fight. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY CHICAGO TRIBUNE • A thrilling adventure of danger and deep-sea diving, historic mystery and suspense, by the author of Shadow Divers Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time. If Chatterton and Mattera succeed, they will make history—it will be just the second time ever that a pirate ship has been discovered and positively identified. Soon, however, they realize that cutting-edge technology and a willingness to lose everything aren’t enough to track down Bannister’s ship. They must travel the globe in search of historic documents and accounts of the great pirate’s exploits, face down dangerous rivals, battle the tides of nations and governments and experts. But it’s only when they learn to think and act like pirates—like Bannister—that they become able to go where no pirate hunters have gone before. Fast-paced and filled with suspense, fascinating characters, history, and adventure, Pirate Hunters is an unputdownable story that goes deep to discover truths and souls long believed lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daring Deeds of Famous Pirates: True Stories of the Stirring Adventures, Bravery and Resource of Pirates, Filibusters and Buccaneers Robbery by sea is certainly one of the oldest professions in the world. I use the word profession advisedly, for the reason that in the earliest days to be a pirate was not the equivalent of being a pariah and an outcast. It was deemed just as honourable then to belong to a company of pirates as it is to-day to belong to the navy of any recognised power. It is an amusing fact that if in those days two strange ships met on the high seas, and one of them, hailing the other, inquired if she were a pirate or a trader, the inquiry was neither intended nor accepted as an insult, but a correct answer would follow. It is a little difficult in these modern days Of regular steamship routes and powerful liners which have littl(e to fear beyond fog and exceptionally heavy weather, to realise that every merchant ship sailed the seas with fear and trepidation. When she set forth from her port of lading there was little certainty that even if the Ship herself reached the port of destination, her cargo would ever be delivered to the rightful receivers. The ship might be jogging along comfortably, heading well up towards her destined port, when out from the distance came a much faster and lighter vessel of smaller displacement and finer lines. In a few hours the latter would have overhauled the former, the scanty crew Of the merchantman would have been thrown into the sea or pressed into the pirate's service, or else taken ashore to the pirate's haunt and sold as slaves. The rich cargo of merchandise could be sold or bartered when the land was reached, and the merchant ship sunk or left to wallow in the Mediterranean swell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Pirate Stories is a collection of extracts of tales of pirates (whether fictional or not - there is no clear indication which are and aren't, you would have to look up each original book for that!). The tales range in dates from as early as 1621 to the 19th Century, which results in the use of a great range of styles of English language (the 1621 account might be a little difficult to read for some due to the more arbitrary use of grammar and spelling of the time). Each extract gives a snippet of a particular encounter with pirates, whether from the pirate's perspective and standpoint or that of their victims or onlookers to the events. Each account is short and wets the appetite for more story before suddenly ending - I'm in half a mind to track down each of the original books for more details. Some accounts are quite intriguing and bring to mind a number of questions about the content (anything from the realism to the accuracy could be questioned down to the motives and what exactly did happen next)... This book does not confine itself to European-based pirates (wherever they then roamed), but also brings out accounts of Chinese, Malay and various other less well-known pirate groups (at least less well-known to me, having done little studies of the topic). Some pirate names are quite familiar though, such as Barbarossa or Morgan. If you have an interest in pirates and pirate stories, this book is a good little gem that'll unearth other gems for you. Book excerpt: This world famous book tells biographies of the greatest pirates who ruled the seas in 18th century. The author, Captain Charles Johnson, was crucially influential in shaping popular conceptions of pirates and more importantly he inspired the classics such as Treasure Island, Peter Pan, On Stranger Tides...; and more recently the movie saga Pirates of the Caribbean and the series Black Sails. This history introduced many features which later became common in pirate literature, such as pirates with missing legs or eyes, the notion of pirates burying treasure, and the name of the pirate flag the Jolly Roger. The book covers the lives and incredible exploits of the following pirates and their crew: Captain Avery Captain Martel Captain Teach, alias Blackbeard Major Stede Bonnet Edward England Charles Vane Captain John Rackam Captain John Phillips The Life of Mary Read & Anne Bonny Captain Howel Davis Captain Bartho Roberts Captain Anstis Worley George Lowther Edward Low John Evans Captain Spriggs An Account of the Pyracies and Murders committed by Philip Roche, &c. The Trial of the Pirates at Providence An Abstract of the Civil Law and Statute Law now in Force, in Relation to Pyracy Captain Misson John Bowen William Kid Captain Tew Halsey Thomas White Captain Condent A Description of Magadoxa Captain Bellamy Captain William Fly Of Capt. Thomas Howard Of Captain Lewis Of Captain Cornelius Of Capt. David Williams Of Capt. Samuel Burgess Of Capt. Nathaniel North Of Captain Teach Of Major Bonnet Of Captain Worley Of Captain Martel Of Captain Vane Of Captain Bowen Captain Charles Johnson is the British author whose real identity remains a mystery but the manner in which he demonstrates a knowledge of the sailor's speech and life, suggests that he could have been an actual sea captain or a professional writer using a pseudonym who was well versed in the sea.

Sometimes terrifying but always colorful characters, their history is as rich with controversy as it is with gold doubloons. The Everything Pirate Book is full of fascinating and little-known facts. Did you know that: Around 75 B.C., Julius Caesar was captured and ransomed by Cilician pirates. After he was released, it is said that he immediately hunted down his captors and killed them; Scottish seafarers and pirates were often nicknamed "red legs" because they wore kilts year round, and their bare legs were often wind- or sunburned; The image of the classic pirate, with flowing clothes, pegleg, eyepatch, parrot on his shoulder, and treasure map in his hand is primarily a result of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. With each passing decade, the legends surrounding pirates have grown to epic proportion, right down to their peglegs and buried treasure. The Everything Pirate Book will take you on a pirate tour from ancient times to their Golden Age to the modern-day search for buried treasure and reveals the truth behind the Hollywood hype.
