THIS simple story of my African experiences was written at first only to amuse my father during his latter years of declining health. After his death, at the request of relatives and friends, I completed it with a view to publication. Book Synopsis The Boer War by : Martin Bossenbroek
Download or read book The Boer War written by Martin Bossenbroek and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) is one of the most intriguing conflicts of modern history. It has been labeled many things: the first media war, a precursor of the First and Second World Wars, the originator of apartheid. The difference in status and resources between the superpower Great Britain and two insignificant Boer republics in southern Africa was enormous. But, against all expectation, it took the British every effort and a huge sum of money to win the war, not least by unleashing a campaign of systematic terror against the civilian population. In The Boer War, winner of the Netherland's 2013 Libris History Prize and shortlisted for the 2013 AKO Literature Prize, the author brings a completely new perspective to this chapter of South African history, critically examining the involvement of the Netherlands in the war. Furthermore, unlike other accounts, Martin Bossenbroek explores the war primarily through the experiences of three men uniquely active during the bloody conflict. They are Willem Leyds, the Dutch lawyer who was to become South African Republic state secretary and eventual European envoy; Winston Churchill, then a British war reporter; and Deneys Reitz, a young Boer commando. The vivid and engaging experiences of these three men enable a more personal and nuanced story of the war to be told, and at the same time offer a fresh approach to a conflict that shaped the nation state of South Africa.

Book Synopsis The Mashonaland Irish Association by : Woods, Joseph
Download or read book The Mashonaland Irish Association written by Woods, Joseph and published by Weaver Press. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a raucous St Patrick’s Day dinner at Fort Salisbury (Harare) in 1891, a mere seven months after the Pioneer Column raised their flag on Cecil Square, the Mashonaland Irish Association was founded. Not only is it the oldest expatriate association in Zimbabwe, the MIA is the oldest Irish association on the African continent. The association developed into a vehicle for celebrating Irishness through a busy social calendar and welfare programmes. For over a century, the MIA has weathered the various challenges and upheavals of a shared colonial experience and Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence. Today, it continues to celebrate all things Irish while embracing its diaspora as it approaches its thirteenth decade of existence. This Miscellany charts the association from its inception to the present day with contributions from historians, scholars, writers and poets, priests, nuns, missionaries, ex-MIA Presidents and members; the diverse contributions range from the colonial Anglo-Irish to the Jewish-Irish experience and throughout, personalities have been resurrected, colourful ones recorded and even the Minute books examined; all attest to the richness of the association, its events but above all its members. Cumulatively, and beyond the stories of individuals, the narrative provides new insights into the layered complexity of the colonial experience, and the adaptation (or not) of people of a different culture and belief into a foreign setting.
