Twice captured and held prisoners by Union forces, he nevertheless along the way fought in many battles, including at Gettysburg and actions against General Phil Sheridan's forces in the Shenandoah Valley. As a major, he commanded the First Maryland Cavalry and Second Maryland Cavalry, supporting Brig. Gen. George Steuart's infantry brigade. Remarkably, after the war, he became president of a veterans group that included old soldiers from the Union and the Confederate armies. He also became the Baltimore City Police Commissioner from 1874 to 1879. He succumbed to complications of a war wound when he was only 45 years old. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
