She is soon joined by Deedee, a brash and rough spoken young woman who, at first glance, seems to be the complete opposite of the reserved, carefully spoken Alberta. As they go about their chores a conversation begins, and it becomes apparent that Alberta might prefer to be alone. As for Deedee, her natural ebullience leads her to reveal more than Alberta cares to know about her childhood and, although she makes light of it, the heartache she feels now that her husband is cheating on her. In time Alberta unbends, confessing that her own life is not as tidy as Deedee had assumed. In the end, the two hear each other out and come to a better understanding of how to deal with the isolation and rejection that life can inflict"--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: In this one-of-a-kind collection of monologue plays, Eric Lane and Nina Shengold have gathered a breathtaking array of human voices and stories by master playwrights and emerging new writers. Each of the plays, ranging from one-acts and ten-minute plays to full-length works, creates a rich and specific world. In these pages, readers will meet a dazzling group of dramatic and comic characters: an actress chasing a role as a prison guard on a soap opera, an Indian waiter new to America, a lesbian performance artist taking her father to Auschwitz, a surfer dude trying to summarize the plot of Moby-Dick in under two minutes, and a Dutch librarian hunting down a book that's 123 years overdue. Because each selection is a complete monologue, Talk to Me is an unprecedented source for actors in search of material for auditions, classes, and performances, as well as a literary gold mine for anyone who loves drama. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many issues remain unresolved in sexuality. In some cases this is because the infor mation is not available to resolve them. In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but normal male behavior motivated politically, to maintain men's dominance of women. Most research supporting the theory investigated women only as victims and men only as aggressors. Some feminists have dismissed the need for any research to support their beliefs on the ground that such research is "busy work" establishing what women already know. One belief considered not to require re search is that heterosexual pornography made for a male audience increases the prevalence of rape by encouraging rape-supportive attitudes of male aggression and female submission. No criticism has been directed at the soft-core pornography of "Mills and Boon" stories written for women that promote similar attitudes.

He wants to make movies. The only ones anyone will pay him to make? Little ones. Thirty seconds long. Commercials. He has no idea what he’s doing and the money sucks. But he’s a director. He gets hired by a client on life support in the most depressing hospital in New York. Gets peed on by a lion. Explains peristalsis to a Tony winner. Makes a movie and goes to Sundance. Goes back to little movies when it bombs. Keeps hustling, shooting anything. Is an a**hole, pays the price, finally learns when and how to be an a**hole and becomes one of the industry’s stars. Years go by and it’s not what he expected. It’s harder, weirder, and funnier. But it worked out. It worked out great, actually.

Book excerpt: Synthesizing cutting-edge research from multiple disciplines, this book explores how young children acquire knowledge in the "real world" and describes practical applications for early childhood classrooms. The breadth and depth of a child's knowledge base are important predictors of later literacy development and academic achievement. Leading scholars describe the processes by which preschoolers and primary-grade students acquire knowledge through firsthand experiences, play, interactions with parents and teachers, storybooks, and a range of media. Chapters on exemplary instructional strategies vividly show what teachers can do to build children's content knowledge while also promoting core literacy skills.

Book excerpt: This collection showcases a wide range of empirical studies in didactic audiovisual translation (DAT), fostering replication of the present work to encourage future research and further expansion of DAT’s applications in language learning settings. The book seeks to offer a complementary perspective with the spotlight on empirical work, building on previous lines of inquiry rooted in descriptive analysis and the “experimental turn.” The volume is divided into three parts, aiming to bring together disparate studies from a range of classroom contexts and educational levels which draw on a mixed-methods approach in one place. The first part features research on captioning, or written language transfer, while the second includes on studies on revoicing, or oral language transfer. A final section looks at combined studies integrating both revoicing and captioning, while looking ahead to possibilities for new lines of empirically grounded research on the use of audiovisual modes at the intersection of translation and foreign language education. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars in audiovisual translation, translation studies, language education, and technology and language learning.
