Book excerpt: For more than a century, science has cultivated a sober public image for itself. But as bestselling author Michael Brooks explains, the truth is very different: many of our most successful scientists have more in common with libertines than librarians. This thrilling exploration of some of the greatest breakthroughs in science reveals the extreme lengths some scientists go to in order to make their theories public. Fraud, suppressing evidence and unethical or reckless PR games are sometimes necessary to bring the best and most brilliant discoveries to the world's attention. Inspiration can come from the most unorthodox of places, and Brooks introduces us to Nobel laureates who get their ideas through drugs, dreams and hallucinations. Science is a highly competitive and ruthless discipline, and only its most determined and passionate practitioners make headlines - and history. To succeed, knowledge must be pursued by any means: in science, anything goes. 'Brooks is an exemplary science writer' William Leith, Daily Telegraph

Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book excerpt: Our understanding of the quantitative aspects of free radical chemistry and the involvement of radicals in such areas as biology, medicine, the environment, etc., has developed spectacularly over recent years, yet the various topics are commonly discussed separately, in specific meetings and specialised publications. Free Radicals in Biology and Environment draws together two important areas of free radical chemistry, using as a bridge the fundamental physical chemistry of free radicals (spectroscopic detection of free radicals, evaluation of absolute rate constants, elucidation of mechanisms of free radical reactions and catalysis, photochemical and radiation processes, etc.). The most relevant topics covered are the EPR detection of radicals in biochemical systems and in pollutant formation and degradation, oxidation processes in biology and in the troposphere, radiation and induced damage, and atmospheric pollutants arising from incomplete combustion. Also covered are the chemistry and biochemistry of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite, the chemistry and biochemistry of DNA radicals, the role of radicals in myeloperoxidase, lignineperoxidase, radicals and cardiovascular injury, radiation and the fragmentation of cells and tissues.

Book excerpt: Elementary radical reactions are described in terms of fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry and chemical physics in this valuable reference text. The complex radical processes of nonchain and chain mechanisms, such as dimerization, alkylation, polymerization, telomerization, halogenation pyrolysis, oxidation and combustion, are complemented by reactions in chemical lasers and in the cosmos, as well as by reactions in biological objects under normal or pathological metabolism. The text also provides the synthesis of facts from various fields of research and involves mechanisms where free radicals appear either as main or side intermediates in one of the several alternatives of the reaction pathway. Highlights include 38 tables and 39 figures.

Book excerpt: An International Syaposiua on Free Radicals in Diagnostic Medicine was co-sponsored by the state University of New York at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the Upstate NY Section of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. The theme was "A Systems Approach To Laboratory Technology, Clinical Correlations And Antioxidant Therapy." The symposium was held on October 7-8, 1993 at the Hyatt Hotel and on October 9 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York. This proceedings volume contains chapters from platform presentations, poster sessions and from invited special lectures in the areas of basic science, clinical applications and efficacy of treatment. A Special Lecture on the relevance of free radical analysis to clinical medicine was presented by Professor Kunio Yagi of Japan. The Yagi procedure to measure thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction reflects the amount of reactive substances, lipid peroxides and aldehydes, in the sample. For example, normal subjects will have less than 4 nmol/ml of serum lipid peroxides, while a person with diabetes generally has equal or greater than 5.0 and a diabetic person with vascular complications often exceeds 7.5 nmol/ml. Serum TBA is a clinically important measure that relates to aging, gender and estrogen as an antioxidant, in the prognosis for vascular disorders, and in pathological conditions relative to the amount of lipid peroxidation. The BASIC SCIENCES portion of the program examined: "Mechanisms of Action, Pathophysiology and Laboratory Tests" in six presentations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free Radicals in Biology, Volume IV reviews diverse topics in free radical biology and covers topics ranging from radiation biology to lipid peroxidation, radical-mediated liver pathology, and chemical carcinogenesis. Radical mechanisms in prostaglandin biochemistry are also discussed, along with the use of electron spin resonance and spin trap methods to probe mechanisms of radical reactions in biological systems. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the mechanisms of lipid peroxidation, focusing on the chemistry of fluorescent products from in vivo lipid peroxidation; the production of pentane in the expired breath of animals exposed to oxidative threats; and the chemistry of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. The next chapter is devoted to the kinetic aspects of lipid peroxidation and the multiple ways in which autoxidants can react. The reader is then introduced to the mechanisms of hepatoxicity by synthetic chemicals present in the environment, together with direct mechanisms of radiation damage to nucleic acids. Subsequent chapters deal with spin trapping in biological systems; the role of free radicals in arylamine carcinogenesis and their influence on the structure and reactivity of melanins; and the involvement of vitamin ? and lipid antioxidants in free-radical-initiated reactions. This book will be of value to chemists, biologists, and physicians.

After briefly providing an overview of the biology of pyridinyl radicals, this book goes on discussing the role of glutathione in the cell and the reactions of single oxygen and its role in photochemical smog and in cellular chemistry. These topics are followed by a discussion on the production of free radicals from dry tissue. The subsequent chapters describe some of the key reactions in photochemical smog, including reaction studies by computer simulation, as well as the specific reactive materials that are present in smog. These chapters also look into the chemistry of nitrogen oxides and ozone, which are some of the most important reactions in photochemical smog. The concluding chapters explore the radiation damage to proteins and radiation protection and radical reactions produced by radiation in nucleic acids. Chemists, biologists, and physicists will find this text invaluable.

Book excerpt: An encyclopedic summary of the highlights in the field of free radicals in medicine and biology, with a detailed analysis of the extensive recent literature. The text describes results from experimental research work on dust inhalation, hypoxia, and environmental toxicology that uses morphologic methods such as electron microscopy, interference microscopy and time-lapse technqiues in tissue cultures. The volume discusses free radical reactions that are probably involved in the pathogenesis of both physical and chemical environmental hazards. It lists radical scavengers that function as useful prophylactic agents in case of unavoidable exposure. A short history of dust diseases that have challenged mankind since prehistoric times serves as an introduction to this comprehensive treatise. It is hoped that by covering this field in one monograph, the increasingly recognized and important role of both oxygen- and nitrogen-centred radicals in disease pathogenesis will become clearer. The enclosed CD includes nearly 25.000 literature citations useful as a reference source for researchers, clinicians and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine has become a classic text in the field of free radical and antioxidant research. Now in its fifth edition, the book has been comprehensively rewritten and updated whilst maintaining the clarity of its predecessors. Two new chapters discuss 'in vivo' and 'dietary' antioxidants, the first emphasising the role of peroxiredoxins and integrated defence mechanisms which allow useful roles for ROS, and the second containing new information on the role of fruits, vegetables, and vitamins in health and disease. This new edition also contains expanded coverage of the mechanisms of oxidative damage to lipids, DNA, and proteins (and the repair of such damage), and the roles played by reactive species in signal transduction, cell survival, death, human reproduction, defence mechanisms of animals and plants against pathogens, and other important biological events. The methodologies available to measure reactive species and oxidative damage (and their potential pitfalls) have been fully updated, as have the topics of phagocyte ROS production, NADPH oxidase enzymes, and toxicology. There is a detailed and critical evaluation of the role of free radicals and other reactive species in human diseases, especially cancer, cardiovascular, chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. New aspects of ageing are discussed in the context of the free radical theory of ageing. This book is recommended as a comprehensive introduction to the field for students, educators, clinicians, and researchers. It will also be an invaluable companion to all those interested in the role of free radicals in the life and biomedical sciences.

Book excerpt: In 1983, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) sponsored the first symposium in what has become the series entitled "Frontiers in Basic Sciences That Relate to Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases. The symposia have become a valuable forum for bringing basic researchers and clinical investigators together to exchange information about fundamental studies related to heart, lung, and blood diseases and about new approaches to clinical research. The series is meeting a long recognized need to stimulate and foster the transfer of basic research information to relevant aspects of clinical application. This symposium was the eighth in the series and the first in a commemorative series of symposia in honor of the Centennial of the National Institutes of Health and the Fortieth Anniversary of the inception of NHLBI. The symposia have been under the leadership of imaginative and expert chairmen, and participants have responded enthusiastically. The meetings have generated widespread interest, and attendance has been large. Clinical researchers have gained insights into etiologic problems and into better ways to diagnose, treat, control, and prevent disease. Basic scientists have been stimulated to develop new approaches to fundamental research questions. To make the series as valuable as possible, we invite suggestions that will improve the format or introduce topics for future symposia. symposium is the eighth in the series entitled Frontiers in Basic Sciences That Relate to Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases.
