Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Plays of Shakespeare Thought is intended as a re sponse to what appears to be the special demand of the century now opening. Just as in the organic world every organism is, we are told, a growth of cells springing from the parent cell, so every good book is nothing more than a synthetic ex pansion of a single, central, living thought. Bacon's entire system of philosophy is nothing more than a development of one great thought: We conquer nature by obeying her. Again, before Darwin and Wal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare Studied in Three Plays "Our dramatic literature is our greatest literature. It is the best thing we have done. Dante may overtop Milton, but Shakespeare surpasses both. He is our finest achievement; his plays our noblest possession; the things in the world most worth thinking about. To live daily in his company, to study his works with minute and loving care - in no spirit of pedantry searching for double endings, but in order to discover their secret, and to make the spoken word tell upon the hearts of man and woman - this might have been expected to produce great intellectual if not moral results." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Plays, Vol. 1 of 3: With His Life; Histories The inquiry will naturally suggest itself to most readers at all conversant with Shakespearian criticism, What can be the use of any more editorial labour upon Shakespeare, and especially by an American editor After the immense labours of a long succession of critics, most of them learned, industrious, and acute, -some of them among the greatest literary names of the last or the present century, - what can be contributed now and here, either to the purity of the Poet's text, or the illustration of his thoughts? In short, it may be asked, Why would not the wants of the American public be better supplied by a reprint of some one or other of the later and more perfect English editions, than by any attempt at a new one C? These, or similar inquiries, would have occurred to no one sooner than to the present editor himself, had he found his own task undertaken by another. The reply can be best given by stating the manner in which he was led to engage in a labour which he would never have undertaken, Voluntarily, from the first, though it has since proved to him one of those labours we delight in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of William Shakespeare, Vol. 3: The Plays Edited From the Folio of 1623, With Various Readings From All the Editions and All the Commentators, Notes, Introductory Remarks By this it will be seen that Whetstone improved greatly upon the plot Of Cinthio's tale, for dramatic purposes, by causing the brother to be condemned for a far more venial fault than that laid to his charge by the Italian author, and by substituting another prisoner as the victim of the governor's faithless cruelty. Upon Whetstone's plot, Shakespeare again improved by still further mitigating the brother's error, by making the monarch himself the principal agent in working out the denouement, and, above all, by the introduction of another female character, betrothed (which in early times was about the same as married) to the deputy, and whose intervention saves his intended victim from compliance with his conditions, while he is yet made answerable for the same crimes of which he is guilty even in the original Italian story. But Shake speare not only adopted, with these great improvements, vvhet stone's variations from Cinthio's novel: he found in Promos and Cassandra another set of characters, the Bawd, the Fantastic, the Clown, and the Constable, which he also introduced but re-created. He followed, too, in some measure, the arrangement of Whetstone's Scenes, and in certain passages of the earlier play we find the germs of others in the later. Thus, for instance, in these lines.
