Book excerpt: This doctoral thesis focuses on the development of Space Vector Modulation (SVM) techniques adjusted for single-shunt current measurement and applied to the three-level three-phase voltage source inverter. Based on the single-shunt current measurement, three-phase load currents are then reconstructed. An overview of existing multilevel topologies and their main operating principles is provided within the thesis. To evaluate proposed SVM techniques adjusted for single-shunt current measurement, a three-level three-phase diode clamped voltage source inverter topology is selected. The main advantages of the selected topology are high efficiency, reduced semiconductor stress, the low capacitance of DC-link capacitors, etc. To reconstruct the three-phase load currents, a single-shunt is positioned inside the middle branch of the DC-link.An overview of existing modulation techniques for two-level and multilevel inverters is provided within the thesis. To reconstruct three-phase load currents, three SVM methods are proposed within the thesis. Due to the lack of a current measurement window, while the voltage vector is positioned near sector or region boundary areas, additional modifications are required. The first SVM method shifts the SVM signals to ensure the minimum current measurement window needed for measurement with minimum additional vector injection. Such an approach ensures the high modulation index values greater than 0.8 with the smallest current ripple due to the SVM signal symmetry. The second method intentionally injects the colinear voltage vector into the existing vector combination to ensure the minimum time window required for current measurement. As a drawback, a smaller modulation index compared to the first method can be achieved. As an advantage, a very low modulation index of less than 0.2 can be achieved. The third method simplifies the second method by using a single SVM pattern. Such a method can be used only for very low modulation indexes and can be applied for two-level and three-level inverters. The proposed SVM methods are implemented within the Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Experimental results confirm the proper operation of the proposed methods applied to the three-level diode clamped voltage source inverter.

Book excerpt: AC voltage frequency changes is one of the most important functions of solid state power converters. The most desirable features in frequency converters are the ability to generate load voltages with arbitrary amplitude and frequency, sinusoidal currents and voltages waveforms; the possibility of providing unity power factor for any load; and, finally, a simple and compact power circuit. Over the past decades, a number of different frequency converter topologies have appeared in the literature, but only the converters with either a voltage or current DC link are commonly used in industrial applications. Improvements in power semiconductor switches over recent years have resulted in the development of many structures of AC-AC converters without DC electric energy storage. Such converters are an alternative solution for frequently recommended systems with DC energy storage and are characterized by a lower price, smaller size and longer lifetime. Most of the these topologies are based on the structure of the matrix converter. Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept presents a review of power frequency converters, with special attention paid to converters without DC energy storage. Particular attention is paid to nine new converters named matrix-reactance frequency converters which have been developed by the author and the team of researchers from Institute of Electrical Engineering at the University of Zielona Góra. The topologies of the presented matrix-reactance frequency converters are based on a three-phase unipolar buck-boost matrix-reactance chopper with source or load switches arranged as in a matrix converter. This kind of approach makes it possible to obtain an output voltage greater than the input one (similar to that in a matrix-reactance chopper) and a frequency conversion (similar to that in a matrix converter). Written for researchers and Ph.D. students working in the field of power electronics converters and drive systems, Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept will also be valuable to power electronics converter designers and users; R&D centers; and readers needing industry solutions in variable speed drive systems, such as automation and aviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-phase motors are common and required for water and wastewater pumping applications in residential developments. However, three-phase electrical distribution is not common within residential sub-divisions and single-phase connections are typically the only type of electrical service available. Since single-phase motors are limited in size and application, electrical power converter devices are used in connecting single-phase utilities with necessary three-phase motor loading and types. This paper explores two novel methods of single to three-phase conversion. Each method relies on creating or deriving a third phase to complement existing single-phase, three-wire configurations. These conversion methods present advantages over existing technologies such as AC/DC/AC converters (variable frequency drives / adjustable speed drives) by reducing component count, increasing operational reliability and ease of use, yet offering the enhanced three-phase performance. The first method proposed makes use of a three-winding transformer to raise and rectify a DC bus voltage to a level required to complete the single to three-phase conversion. The second method proposed implements a fully electronic converter to reduce size, weight, and cost. An ideal three-phase voltage source case is modeled and these two cases are compared against the ideal three-phase source conditions. Each case analyzes line and motor current, as well as torque and speed profiles. Required concepts in electrical machinery, power distribution, and power electronics are discussed to familiarize the reader with the proposed conversion techniques. Some concepts are modified for application specific use, but retain basic form and functionality. Future work and additional analysis are presented at the end.

Book excerpt: Two-stage single-phase converters, including two-stage single-phase dc-ac inverters and two-stage single-phase PFC converters, are interfacing power converters between dc and ac voltage/current sources, which have been widely applied for dc-ac and ac-dc power conversion. For the two-stage single-phase converter, the ac-side power pulsates at twice the ac voltage frequency, resulting in second harmonic current (SHC) which might flow into the dc-dc converter, the dc voltage source, and dc load. This book clarifies the generation, propagation, and side-effects of this SHC and proposes the SHC reduction control schemes for the dc-dc converter, with different topologies and/or different operating modes, in the single-phase converter. On this basis, the second harmonic current compensator (SHCC) is proposed to compensate the SHC, significantly reducing the dc bus capacitance. In doing so, the electrolytic capacitors, with short lifetimes, are removed from the two-stage single-phase converter, leading to extended system lifetime and enhanced system stability. For having flawless SHC compensation performance, the port-current control schemes are proposed for the SHCC. Additionally, the stability analysis is carried out for the two-stage single-phase converter with the addition of SHCC. This book is a monograph combining theoretical analysis and engineering design, which could not only be a reference book for master students, Ph.D. students, and teachers majoring in power electronics but also be a handbook for the electrical engineers working on the research and development of LED drivers, EV on-board chargers, railway auxiliary power supplies, aviation power supplies, renewable energy generation systems, etc.

Book excerpt: The transportation sector is gaining much more attention towards all-electric modes such as electric vehicles (EV), and more electric aircrafts and ships. EVs lead the transportation sector with luxurious, high performance, and intelligent vehicles. The stored battery energy is the most important factor for the operation of the whole vehicle and therefore, EV battery chargers play an important role in the electric transportation sector. High frequency isolated battery charger converters are much preferred in the industry as they provide electrical isolation and reduce magnetic component size. Phase shifted pulse width modulation is commonly used in transformer isolated converters for high frequency power transfer. Generally, the voltage waveforms are phase shifted no more than 45 degrees for grid connected converter applications. In grid connected applications, the high frequency pulse widths (180° to minimum determined by modulation index) may vary when controlling the grid current. If, for certain duration of the low frequency reference signal, the pulse widths are smaller than the externally-commanded phase shift, the pulses would be completely separated. Under these conditions, unwanted reactive content is generated in the converter increasing the high frequency rms current hence increasing conduction losses. An original concept is proposed to lower the reactive content of the high frequency current by positioning the transformer primary and secondary voltage pulses next to each other whenever the phase shift is larger than the pulse width. The voltage pulses are positioned appropriately in each carrier cycle throughout the entire low frequency reference signal. This concept which is referred to as reference-based pulse position (RPP) allows the operation of the converter beyond 45 degree limit and up to 90 degrees allowing for more power output. The concept is tested on an isolated single-stage bidirectional three-phase ac-dc converter which conducts both low frequency grid current and high frequency transformer current. The grid side or the primary of the converter generates the high frequency transformer voltage when controlling the grid current. The switches in the secondary side are then controlled in such a way in each carrier cycle as to coordinate with primary voltage waveform to minimize the reactive content of the high frequency current. The power is transferred utilizing the transformer interlimb leakage inductance. The transformer windings are connected so that the 60Hz grid current does not produce flux in the core leaving only the high frequency flux. Therefore, the size of the magnetics can be reduced which favors a compact design. Furthermore, the dc link utilization is maximized by injecting the third harmonic into the sine reference signals which lowers the dc link requirement by 15%.
