Book excerpt: Their story began 500 million years ago, but we only started to get to know them in 1746, when Linné described the first ostracod species. Vividly portraying the freshwater ostracods, this comprehensive reference work gathers the knowledge gained during some 250 years, but which to date has remained scattered throughout the literature. It starts with an introduction to the class Ostracoda with a special focus on freshwater ostracods and highlights practical methods in their study. The systematic part includes an introduction to all families; identification keys for all subfamilies, genera and species; diagnoses for each subfamily and genus; and lists of synonyms and distribution of species. The text is richly illustrated with distribution maps, line drawings of key generic characteristics, and numerous SEM photographs. Serving as an excellent starting point for all further research on freshwater ostracods, it can be widely used not only by ostracodologists, but also by crustaceologists, evolutionists and ecologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is composed of papers presented at an International Symposium on Athalassic (Inland) Salt Lakes, which was hosted by the University of Adelaide, South Australia, during a week in October 1979. The genesis of the Symposium was at the Copenhagen Congress of the International Association of Limnology (S.1. L.) where it was noted that a number of papers concerned with inland saline lakes were distributed throughout sessions in such a way as to make it difficult to attend all of them. A number of participants at the Congress felt that the ecology of salt lakes had greater homogeneity or cohesiveness than this sort of distribution would suggest, and it was decided that a symposium on salt lakes be held. The symposium was the first under the aegis of the S.l. L. to be held in Australia, and it was very well attended, with participants coming from many countries. The week long programme produced a number of lively and interesting sessions on all aspects of athalassic saline lakes. Participants stayed on after the Symposium for an expedition to Lake Eyre, in the nQrth of South Australia, and were given one of the best of all possible introductions to the Australian environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are among the world’s most valuable and most threatened habitats, and in these crucially important ecosystems, the invertebrate fauna holds a focal position. Most of the biological diversity in wetlands is found within resident invertebrate assemblages, and those invertebrates are the primary trophic link between lower plants and higher vertebrates (e.g. amphibians, fish, and birds). As such, most scientists, managers, consultants, and students who work in the world’s wetlands should become better informed about the invertebrate components in their habitats of interest. Our book serves to fill this need by assembling the world’s most prominent ecologists working on freshwater wetland invertebrates, and having them provide authoritative perspectives on each the world’s most important freshwater wetland types. The initial chapter of the book provides a primer on freshwater wetland invertebrates, including how they are uniquely adapted for life in wetland environments and how they contribute to important ecological functions in wetland ecosystems. The next 15 chapters deal with invertebrates in the major wetlands across the globe (rock pools, alpine ponds, temperate temporary ponds, Mediterranean temporary ponds, turloughs, peatlands, permanent marshes, Great Lakes marshes, Everglades, springs, beaver ponds, temperate floodplains, neotropical floodplains, created wetlands, waterfowl marshes), each chapter written by groups of prominent scientists intimately knowledgeable about the individual wetland types. Each chapter reviews the relevant literature, provides a synthesis of the most important ecological controls on the resident invertebrate fauna, and highlights important conservation concerns. The final chapter synthesizes the 15 habitat-based chapters, providing a macroscopic perspective on natural variation of invertebrate assemblage structure across the world’s wetlands and a paradigm for understanding how global variation and environmental factors shape wetland invertebrate communities.

Book excerpt: Ostracod crustaceans, common microfossils in marine and freshwater sedimentary records, supply evidence of past climatic conditions via indicator species, transfer function and mutual climatic range approaches as well as the trace element and stable isotope geochemistry of their shells. As methods of using ostracods as Quaternary palaeoclimate proxies have developed, so too has a critical awareness of their complexities, potential and limitations. This book combines up-to-date reviews (covering previous work and summarising the state of the art) with presentations of new, cutting-edge science (data and interpretations as well as methodological developments) to form a major reference work that will constitute a durable bench-mark in the science of Ostracoda and Quaternary climate change. - In-depth and focused treatment of palaeoclimate applications - Provides durable benchmark and guide for all future work on ostracods - Presents new, cutting-edge science

Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive review of parasitic Crustacea, which are among the most successful and diverse parasites. Starting with an introductory chapter, followed by an historic overview and topic-specific chapters, each presenting a different aspect of parasitic crustacean biology, it enables readers to gain a better understanding of how these parasites function and allows direct comparisons between the different parasitic crustacean groups. The authors also discuss, in depth, the adaptations and interactions that have made parasitic Crustacea as successful as they are today, covering topics ranging from the history of their discovery, their biodiversity, phylogeny, evolution and life strategies to their role as vectors, or hosts of other organisms, and their significance in ecological processes. Consisting of ten chapters from leading international experts in the field, this volume offers a one-stop resource for all researchers, lecturers, students and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ostracods belong to a group of microfossils found in nearly all types of aquatic environments. These microcrustaceans, characterized by a bivalved, calcitic carapace, are used to reconstruct ancient environments. For example, they can help to provide information on palaeoclimates, palaeogeography, the formation of deep oceans, sea level changes, etc. This book endeavours to bring about a greater understanding of their usefulness in many aspects of geological sciences, and provides suggestions for future research. It is principally intended for the non-specialist, and shows many applications of ostracods to help solve geological problems and phenomena. Topics reviewed assume no prior knowledge of palaeontology, and thus terminology is kept simple. There is an exhaustive index, and an appendix supplying additional references on significant sources of information on ostracods. This book aims to deliver information on ostracods to those people not usually interested in the literature of palaeontology and also to awaken an interest in the Ostracoda by referring to more specialized articles published elsewhere.

Book excerpt: This work provides a user-friendly, species level taxonomic key based on morphology, current nomenclature, and modern taxonomy using molecular tools which fulfill the most pressing needs of both researchers and environmental managers. This key arms the reader with the tools necessary to improve their species identification abilities. This book resolves another issue as well: the mix of female and male characters used in keys to the calanoid copepods. Often, during the identification process, both calanoid copepod sexes are not available, and the user of such a key is stuck with an uncertain identification. Here, separate male and female keys to the calanoid copepods are provided for both the genera and species levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book on Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. It covers the whole spectrum of Tropical Freshwater zooplankton and includes the non conventional group, the Ostracoda. One chapter is devoted to miscellaneous groups like Chaoborus, Hydracarina, Protozoa and some others that occur from time to time in freshwater zooplankton. Another chapter, on the interactions of zooplankton and fisheries, should make the book more useful to tropical fish culturists and fishery biologists. The authors of the chapters on the different groups of zooplankton and fisheries are authorities in these fields They have also collaborated with the leading researchers in the field from all continents and this work has benefited from input of both younger scientists and senior collaborators working closely with the authors in laboratories worldwide. The text is written clearly and concisely in as simple a way as the material permits, so that it can be used by workers who are not specialists in zooplankton, and in developing countries. However, the material is comprehensive, authoritative and up to date. The book is profusely illustrated with 121 plates (1119 line drawings) and should enable users to obtain reliable diagnoses to species level in many cases and also glean basic ideas about methodology, ecology, zoogeography and classification. The book, though written by six authors, is completely integrated as a guide to Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. This book should be of use to a wide variety of freshwater biologists, both beginners and those already working in the field for some time. There is much material that is relevant and up to date, some of it that is not familiar to many students in the field. The literature coverage is designed to give a wide perspective of research in the field without attempting to be exhaustive. Key references are included so that the user can access almost all the literature in the field but with special reference to the tropical region. This book should be on the shelf of individual workers in zooplankton and especially in laboratories where work on freshwater ecology and sytematics of the fauna is being carried out. Libraries should have a copy available as a general reference for freshwater biologists. Researchers and students of freshwater zooplankton, fishery scientists and fish culturists in tropical regions will benefit from this wide-ranging book.
